If you are going to go out to eat and one of your group members has a physical disability, please ask them if they have any accomodations they require! If you aren't sure when you're telling a host, you can step aside and ask them or call them. And if you can't reach them, tell the host that you don't know, that way they can prepare for multiple options!

I know it varies from restaurant to restaurant, but one of the biggest things able bodied people give bad information about being okay is a table vs a booth. It's okay to not know. It is okay to say so. But assuming it will be okay leads to difficulty for everyone involved, and quite possibly embarrassment for your companion because it puts them on the spot.

Note: I'm an able-bodied individual. This is from my experience working in a restaurant where you are seated by a host. If anyone would like to offer corrections or alternative points of view, please do.

You’d think that as a chronically ill person with arthritis, fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, chronic fatigue, on top of mental illness, autism, etc, I should just be able to go, “I feel too ill to work today”, communicate this to my boss/coworkers in an easily accessible way, not show up, and have this be a widely understood, easy to come by accommodation. Just not having to show up- no limits to how many days you can miss, no being treated like you’re on thin ice every time you can’t make it (yes even when it’s at the very last minute, that’s how chronic illness works), no threat of not being able to pay rent or buy groceries if you miss a day of work just because you’re “not disabled enough” to be eligible for welfare (or even just haven’t been able to go through the application process), no threat of getting written up or sent for a talking to, no being seen as “lazy” or “taking advantage” or looked down on by your coworkers due to things out of your control. And yet. The thought of that actually happening feels so unrealistic…

Why do PE teachers have it out for disabled kids? Did god himself descend to earth to tell these middle aged men to force disabled children to play dodgeball?!!? Sure I’ll run the fucking beep test but only if you’re willing to dig my grave and bring cucumber sandwiches to my funeral.

okay y’all, this is actually kind of important (to me, at least)! it’s not a worldwide issue, but I’ve been given the unique opportunity to actually get my school to better accommodate neurodivergent students, and I really want to hear what everyone has to say/suggests! this is very important to me and a lot of people I know, so if u could please help I’d appreciate it! I’m trying to do as much as I can, so please, give me any and every suggestion!
