Spinning in full garb at the Carolina Ren Faire
(If you turn on sound be prepared for the jovial shouts of children and conversations of other faire goers...quiet filming does not exist at ren faires lol)
Took the opportunity to spin in period character while at the ren faire with my partner and kids on Saturday. Got lots of fun questions from other faire goers, many nods of respect from faire staff, and spun about 25-30g of wool. 🥰
Loads of fun, 10/10 would recommend doing period fiber arts as cosplay.
Made a distaff! Only needed 3 bandaids and 1 butterfly suture 🙃
It's a branch off and orange tree, gorgeous green tone to it. Needs some polishing and smoothing still, but I'm keen to play around with it.
I have discovered the joys of spinning with a distaff, it's so much easier to manage the fiber!
This is Merino I'm planning to 4ply, I split the braid in 4 and spun two turtles from each end so hopefully there will be some nice opposing gradients.
OMG a distaff changes everything!!!! Suddenly drop spindling makes sense! I know where my hands go and everything just works. It's effortless. I was able to pace back and forth while making yarn! I'm so incredibly happy with it ;0; I can't wait until my turkish spindle arrives so I can try that too.
I went to Maryland Sheep and Wool last week and this is one (of two) spindles I got and then the distaff was a gift (also bought at the fest). The distaff is from Dan Tracy Designs and the spindle was from the Handspun by Stefania booth, although it's made by Bergschultz Studio, out of polymer clay I think. It weighs just under an ounce. I also got (arguably too much) fiber that I'm excited to be working through :3
This fiber here is something I previously purchased from BeesyBee Fibers, Old Lavender I think the color is called. It's a merino silk blend.
🚨DISTAFF NEWS🚨
I've asked for a sturdier base but it looks like I should have my distaff soon!
Source details and larger version.
You spin me round: my dizzy collection of vintage spinning and twirling imagery.
i just wanted to know what using a distaff was like and god help me I started laughing as soon as I saw + heard this wonderful man. i think I'm in love with him. Italy is a real place; you can go there
