Lady x Nonbinary!Reader

The door slammed harder than you meant it to. The sound echoed through the shop, sharp and sudden, like a gunshot that hadn’t been planned. You froze just inside the doorway, hand still on the handle, breath uneven.

Great. Perfect. Subtle.

You exhaled slowly, trying to steady yourself, trying to shove everything from the day back down where it belonged, where it wouldn’t spill out and make you look weak, or worse… needy.

Too late for subtle now.

“Rough day?”

Her voice came from the couch. Casual, familiar, a little rough around the edges in a way that always made you feel grounded. Lady didn’t look up right away. She was cleaning one of her guns, movements precise, practiced. Like she already knew the answer and was just giving you the chance to say it. You shrugged, even though she wasn’t looking.

“Something like that,” you muttered.

She hummed softly, still not pushing and that somehow made it worse. Because if she had pried, if she had teased, you could’ve deflected, joked, or dodged. But this? This quiet patience? It cracked something.

You dropped your bag by the door and moved further inside, slower now. The weight in your chest hadn’t eased. If anything, it felt heavier with every step.

“I just...” You stopped, pressing your lips together. “It was stupid.”

Lady finally looked up. Not sharp. Not judging. Lady was never judging. Well, not to you at least. Dante is a different story.

“It didn’t feel stupid,” she said simply.

That did it. Your shoulders slumped, the tension bleeding out of you all at once like your body had been waiting for permission to give in.

“I’m just tired,” you admitted, voice quieter now. “Of people. Of expectations. Of feeling like I have to-” You gestured vaguely, frustrated. “Be something specific all the time.”

Her gaze softened, something warm slipping into her expression.

“Yeah,” she said gently. “That’ll do it.”

You laughed weakly, dragging a hand down your face. “I don’t even know why I’m this upset. It’s not like anything huge happened, it just… stacked up, I guess.”

“Hey.” Her tone shifted slightly into something firmer, but still soft. “You don’t need a ‘big enough’ reason to feel like crap.”

You glanced at her. She was watching you fully now, gun set aside, attention entirely yours.

“You had a bad day,” she continued. “That’s reason enough.”

Something in your chest tightened again, but this time it wasn’t as sharp.

“…Yeah,” you murmured.

Lady tilted her head slightly, studying you. “C’mere.”

You blinked. “What?”

“C’mere,” she repeated, softer this time, patting the spot beside her on the couch.

You hesitated. Not because you didn’t want to, God, you wanted to, but because there was still that lingering voice in your head telling you not to take up space, not to need too much. She noticed. Her expression shifted just a little, something knowing, something patient.

“You don’t have to say anything,” she added. “Just… sit with me.”

That made it easier. You moved over, slower this time, and sat beside her. Not too close at first. Just enough to share the space. For a moment, neither of you spoke. Then, her hand brushed against yours. Light and testing. Like she was giving you time to pull away if you wanted to.

You didn’t. Your fingers curled slightly, just enough to meet hers. That was all the invitation she needed. Lady shifted closer, her shoulder pressing gently against yours, warm and steady.

“Better?” she asked quietly.

You exhaled, some of the tightness finally easing. “…A little.”

“Good.” Her hand squeezed yours, just once. “You wanna talk about it?”

You shook your head. “Not really.”

“Alright.”

You leaned into her slightly before you could overthink it. She didn’t react right away, didn’t make a big deal out of it. She just adjusted, shifting so you could settle more comfortably against her side. Her arm slid around your shoulders securely. Like she’d done this a hundred times, even if she hadn’t. Your head tipped against her shoulder, and for the first time all day, everything… quieted.

“You’re allowed to exist how you are, you know,” she murmured after a moment.

You huffed softly. “Tell that to everyone else.”

“I would,” she said dryly. “But I think I’d end up punching at least three people, and we’re trying to avoid that this week.”

That pulled a real laugh out of you. It was small, but it was real.

“Fair.”

Her thumb began tracing slow, absent patterns against your arm.

“You don’t have to fit into anything,” she continued, voice softer now. “Not for them. Not for anyone.”

You swallowed.

“…Even if it makes things harder?”

“Yeah,” she said without hesitation. “Even then.”

You tilted your head slightly to look at her. She met your gaze, unwavering.

“Anyone worth your time isn’t gonna make you feel like you have to shrink yourself to be understood,” she added.

Your chest ached in a good way.

“…You don’t,” you said quietly.

Her expression softened just a fraction more.

“Good,” she replied.

You studied her for a moment, then looked away again, suddenly a little shy under the weight of everything you were feeling.

“…Can I stay like this for a bit?” you asked.

Her answer was immediate.

“Yeah. As long as you want.”

You settled back against her, this time without hesitation. Her hold tightened just slightly. Not enough to trap you, just enough to remind you she was there. After a while, her chin rested lightly against the top of your head.

“You know,” she said softly, “you don’t have to wait for bad days to come to me.”

You closed your eyes.

“…I know.”

“Good.”

Another quiet moment passed. Then, softer-

“Hey.”

You hummed in response.

“I’ve got you,” she said.

You believed her.

Dante towel dried his hair as he made his way to the bedroom, ignoring how cold the floor felt on his wet feet. And, there you were, laid out on your side of the bed. Scrolling through whatever on your phone as he throws the towel into an overflowing laundry basket. A problem for another day, because today was being taken off by the both of you. You two having been worn thin by work and everything outside of it. Except for each other. 

He falls with a light grunt onto the empty side of the bed, his side. The side that had a divot in it from years of sleeping. He reaches out, but you’re only within the reach of his hand, it laying on your side heavily. You let out a playful scoff and lay your free hand over it, which only earns you a groan. “Baaaabe.” “Hmm?” You feel him shift forward just enough to get a grip on you, pulling you in closer to him. “Turn that thing off will you?” It clicks off as you roll into him- and into the divot in the bed. You had only turned it off to humor him. “Well, if you pay the bills for it, then you get to tell me what to do with it.” 

You don’t react as he pulls it from your hand and tosses it where you had just rolled from, choosing instead to lay your head against his shoulder. For once the building was quiet, and there was no threat or expectation of anything ruining that. His hand slides under your shirt, but rests itself on your back. His thumb rubs gentle circles into your skin. Neither of you could think of a reason to get up or move at that moment, not that you wanted to. This was the most calm moment you have been able to share in a good while, nothing in the world could possibly ruin this. Knock on wood.

There’s a slight laugh from him. “We should get a new mattress- things old as hell.” Taking the moment to close your eyes, you smile and place your hand over your shirt and his hand. “Well, that means the dip in the bed will be gone- and if it’s gone, where will I sleep when you’re on a job?” You feel him suck in a deep breath, his voice obviously strained with the weight of holding back something. “Okay. Nevermind.” 

Vergil

Acts of service. 

Vergil wasn’t a man of loving words. Lord knows he has them swirling in his head whenever he is around you, but he can not figure out how to say them properly and without his own pride getting in the way. Every time he touches you, even if you assure him, he feels as though he is doing it wrong. That he’s too stiff or will hurt you- so he will simply stick to what he knows. 

He took your slip of paper- but hopes you will not mind. It had your dry cleaners address on it, and the number for your pick-up. Lucky for him, you had already paid for the service, making it much easier for him. The last time he used your card you had tried to teach him, which ended up in him becoming incredibly frustrated. If you hadn't been there it would have gotten messy, so with this being a surprise, he couldn't have you with him. You were already so swamped with work and preparations for the diner these clothes were for- he only felt it fair if he did something to lighten your load. 

The pick-up went smoothly, and the attendant didn’t question why it was a different person picking up- or try to confirm anything with you. Well, who in their right mind would want to get on his bad side, of all people?

Upon arriving home from a long day, you found Vergil in his study- busy with… whatever Vergil does to keep himself busy. You didn’t feel the need for a diner, having spent the day filled up on trying different food for the big night. Everything had to be ready for your pitch, even the food being off could sway their decision. You didn’t want to cook, and Vergil in the kitchen is more dangerous than anything you could imagine. Feet aching from your tight work shoes, you waddle your way into the bedroom to get undressed, and there waiting for you was the dry cleaning you’ve been putting off getting. 

“Oh Vergil.”

Lady

The radio was playing- you don’t even know at this point. Wasn’t anything you recognized at least. You stir the pot a little more as she finishes up her explanation of the last job she had. “Ugh, I'm sorry about all that- Okay. The vegetables need to finish cooking, and in the meantime we can… I don’t know.” Her hip leaned against the counter top, one hand idly tapping on the granite. “You know what we should do?” You huff out a scoff and roll your eyes. “I’d love to, especially after this week, but all I have is some cheap Peppermint Schnapps- and I really don’t want to get drunk off of that.” 

She nods up to the cabinet closest to your head, a small smile on her lips. “What did you-?” You yank open the cabinet and there it is. The exact brand of Pomegranate wine you had at an old friend wine tasting engagement party… 6 years ago. You had written it down so you could go buy a bottle after the party, only to find out that it was way too expensive. “Lady, you didn’t.” There's a gentle laugh from her as you pull the bottle out, looking it over with wide and bewildered eyes. Your eyes shoot to her once you fully process that this was actually in your hands. “How much was this? How much do I need to give you for this?” 

“Don’t worry about that, just grab the glasses.”

It was just as good as you remember it being, and now it tasted like relief. Would it pair well with tonight’s dinner? No, no it will not. But that isn’t what we’re focusing on here. The fact that you were almost done with your second glass is. The last unrecognizable song fades out, and after the momentary quiet, one you know very well fades in. You offer her your free hand. "My love." Coupled with the music, she sets down her glass and takes it. "of course."

By the time this song would be over, all of the food would be overcooked, but that doesn't matter now.

Nero

-one of the most playful boys with this issue
