fictober day 09: "sounds like 'you' problem" by @fictober-event
ch summary: After practice one day, Hinata feels insecure about his size. This isn't unusual, but Kageyama says something that makes Hinata rethink his position on the court and his place on the team.
Noya brought his face closer to their hands, squinting as well. He frowned in concentration. “I can’t… either. You know what that means, right, Shouyou?”
“What?”
“It means I win.”
“Whaaa?!” Hinata jerked his hand away, giving his upperclassman an offended look. “That’s not fair, Noya-san!”
“Of course it is.” Noya’s frown vanished and was replaced a second later with a toothy grin. “I have seniority!”
“How does that make your hands bigger than mine?”
“Because seniority~” Noya sang as if it made perfect sense, even though it didn’t make any sense at all.
“Yeah, well,” Hinata began, scrambling to think. “Well, I’m still an inch taller than you!”
Noya gasped, now looking just as offended as Hinata felt. “Going for that single inch? Shouyou! You wound me.”
“Oh, knock it off, you two,” their captain said. “You’re supposed to be helping clean up! Did you forget your promise this morning?”
Noya slumped forward, and in a defeated voice: “To work with everyone to clean up for the event this evening.”
“And?”
“And that’s why practice ended early,” Hinata added with a sad sigh.
“Good.”
“You’re both short to me,” Tsukishima said suddenly.
“Yeah, yeah, that’s what I’m known for these days.” Hinata rolled his eyes as he stood up to fulfill Daichi’s orders. “Nobody’s gonna let me live it down.”
“Sounds like a ‘you’ problem.”
“Don’t you worry, Shouyou,” Noya said, standing as well after giving Tsukishima a dirty look. He clapped Hinata on the back with enthusiasm, their argument now long forgotten. “I’m not giving up on you. We’ll always suffer together!”
Across the court, Tanaka burst into laughter. Despite this, Hinata smiled at his upperclassman, trying to remain in good spirits. “Thanks, Noya-san.”
Twenty minutes later, when they’d finished cleaning up and changed out of their practice clothes, Hinata walked in step with Kageyama like he usually did when practice concluded for the day. It was oddly quiet—but then again, it wasn’t unusual for Kageyama to stay silent while Hinata babbled away. This time, though, Hinata didn’t feel like talking, either.
Unfortunately, it seemed like Kageyama noticed.
“What’s with you?”
“Hm?”
“You’re moping.”
“I’m not moping,” Hinata defended, giving him a heated look.
“Are too.”
“Hush it."
“It’s the hand thing, isn’t it?”
Hinata opened his mouth to deny it once more but then paused, irritated because Kageyama was right. And maybe that was stupid or made him seem childish, but he didn’t care—he’d always been self-conscious about his size, and while Noya didn’t seem particularly worried back in practice, it did bother Hinata, because, well…
He’d always thought it was cool that other players—Kageyama included—could hold a volleyball with one hand. Hinata hated that he couldn’t do it, himself. His hands just weren’t big enough.
“Oi,” Kageyama said when Hinata remained silent. “What’s your deal? Why does that matter?”
It took Hinata a few moments to realize that he’d stopped walking, causing Kageyama to pause in his steps as well, only a foot or so ahead of him.
“Shut up,” Hinata said sourly. He gripped his handlebars tightly, gazing at the pavement. “You wouldn’t get it.”
“Why not?”
“’Cause you’re tall! Nobody picks on you for being short. Nobody would pick on you for having tiny hands.”
Kageyama didn’t respond, at first. Hinata risked a glance up at him to see why and found that Kageyama wasn’t even looking at him—instead, his eyes were locked on Hinata’s hands.
“Your size is actually your greatest weapon,” he said eventually.
Hinata’s frown deepened. “I know. Volleyball is all about size. You don’t have to keep reminding me.”
“No, I mean, it’s your greatest weapon, personally,” Kageyama went on. “You’re short, so everyone looks at you and thinks, ‘This guy isn’t a threat.’ But you are. You’re the biggest threat we have.”
Hinata’s breath caught in his throat upon hearing the words, eyes blown wide. Something fluttered in his stomach—a sensation that he’d associated with Kageyama time and time again—and he thought, in the safety of his own mind:
How come you know exactly what to say to make me speechless?
“...oh.” A tiny, excited smile pulled at his lips. “You think that?”
“You’ve proved it, you idiot.”
“Me,” Hinata echoed, suddenly extremely giddy. “A threat. The biggest threat in Karasuno.”
“You still have a lot to learn,” Kageyama warned abruptly. "Don't let it go to your head."
“As if you have any room to say that to me.”
Hinata’s grin shifted into something less gleeful and more teasing as he spoke. Still, he couldn’t deny the joy that spread through him brought by Kageyama’s words. It was so strong that he wanted to take off on his bike with a celebratory cheer, and he was getting ready to do just that when something curled around his wrist.
Hinata froze. “Wh…”
He glanced down to check and yeah, that was Kageyama’s hand. When he lifted his gaze to give Kageyama a questioning look, Kageyama wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“S—” He stumbled, cheeks pink. “So, uh…”
“...Kageyama?”
“Don’t. Um.”
Hinata blinked, waiting.
“Just don’t let it bother you,” Kageyama finally spat out. “It’s—it’s not like it has to be a bad thing.”
It took him a few moments to realize that Kageyama was trying to reassure him. It was… almost funny how Kageyama could say something that would stick with him for a long time without even trying, but when he actually put the effort into cheering him up, he didn’t know how.
Once again, Hinata’s smile changed. Grew softer. Sweeter. His wrist felt warm underneath Kageyama’s fingers, and slowly, experimentally, he moved his hand to touch Kageyama’s.
Unlike Noya’s, Kageyama’s hand was much larger than his own. He rested his palm against Kageyama’s, lining up their fingers, and for once, the size difference didn’t bother him.
He... kind of liked it.
“Alright,” he said softly, with that same smile. Kept their hands pressed together. Found the warmth to be pleasant. He didn’t pull away.

fictober day 8: "do you remember?" by @fictober-event
ch summary: School is canceled due to the snowy weather. Hinata bikes into town and shows up at Kageyama's house anyway.
“Whoa, it really snowed a ton,” Hinata exclaimed into the phone, panting. “No wonder they canceled school before it even started yesterday.”
Kageyama winced at the loud volume of his voice, although he didn’t know what he expected. Of course Hinata would be wide-awake at—at whatever time it was. Kageyama, personally, had decided to sleep in until his phone started ringing.
“You called me to tell me it snowed?” he grumbled, rubbing an eye. “I coulda looked out the window, idiot.”
“Wow, ok, you’re an idiot,” Hinata shot back. “We don’t have to sit through boring classes! Where’s your excitement?”
“I’m too tired for that shit. Give me one reason why I shouldn’t hang up so I can go back to sleep.”
This time, Hinata chuckled nervously. “Well, um… I’m kind of at your door, so…”
“I’m at your door,” Hinata repeated, slower, his words tinged with more nervous laughter. “...can I come in?”
For a moment, Kageyama’s sleep-clogged brain failed to register Hinata’s request. He just sat there with dinner plate eyes, mouth hanging open, struggling to process his words.
Hinata. Hinata willingly came over, on their spontaneous day off from school. And now he was at his door. For what reason? It snowed enough to cancel the whole day of classes, not to mention volleyball practice, and this idiot had left his house—a house that sat on a damn mountain—and how did he even get here? On foot?
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Kageyama burst out finally, throwing himself out of his bed. “It’s gotta be freezing outside and you’re—did you bike here?”
“Uh,” Hinata fumbled, and the silence that followed was enough of an answer for Kageyama.
“You idiot,” he went on, and it didn’t matter that he was only in pajamas because moronic Hinata was at his door, had ridden his bike in the snow, and something about those facts had him rushing to let Hinata in.
“Hi,” Hinata said meekly when he finally reached and opened the door.
Kageyama nearly dropped his phone.
Hair damp, nose pink, and the shell of his coat dripping, Hinata looked like he’d been caught in the rain. His bike lay on its side, discarded in the yard, and a glance down at his shoes showed Kageyama that they were soaked.
“Oh my god, get in here, you moron,” Kageyama hissed, yanking him by the arm immediately. “Are you stupid? It’s freezing outs— you’re freezing!”
“Yeah… I realized that riding my bike probably wasn’t very smart,” Hinata said nervously, looking down at his shoes as he removed them slowly. “I slid on the ice a few times, so… I got all wet from the snow…”
“What were you thinking?” Kageyama said as he closed the door. “You could get sick! You could’ve been hurt—did you get hurt? You didn’t scrape yourself up, did you? We have a game next week!”
“I know, it was pretty stupid,” Hinata said. “And impulsive. I just… Natsu and Kaa-san were held up because of the snow, and the buses aren’t running, and… and I wanted to see you, I guess.”
Kageyama’s rant withered in his throat, and his mouth snapped shut. What did he say to that? His brain blanked on him as he stared at Hinata’s sheepish but genuine expression, once again failing to come up with the right words to respond.
“Oh,” was all that came out, faint and inexplicably breathless, when his voice finally decided to work again.
But then he saw the way Hinata’s lip quivered, and everything came back online in an instant. He tugged at Hinata’s gloved hand—what was the point of wearing them if they were wet?—and dragged him along as he marched off to his bedroom.
“Wha—where are we going?” Hinata squeaked. “What’re you… what’re you doing?”
“You have to get those wet clothes and get warm, dumbass,” Kageyama told him because, hello, wasn’t it obvious? “You’re going to get sick.”
When they reached Kageyama’s bedroom, he released Hinata to dig through his dresser for something even a little small for Hinata to wear. He wasn’t very successful—all he had was old clothes from middle school, but he ultimately decided Hinata in clothes too large for him was better than a sick Hinata, right?
“I’m sorry,” Hinata said sheepishly. “For, um. For intruding…”
“That’s not—” Kageyama stopped, trying to collect himself. He wasn’t trying to yell. “That’s not the point. You could come over at any time and I wouldn’t care, I just don’t want you getting sick!”
Hinata looked up at him, then, his eyes now blown wide in surprise. “Huh?”
“Do you remember?” he went on. “We have to be careful with ourselves, for volleyball! You can’t play if you’re hurt.”
Hinata blinked a few times but didn’t respond. Instead, he just stared up at Kageyama as if he’d just revealed the secret to getting good grades in school or something.
Then, eventually: “Do… do you mean that?”
“Mean what?”
“I can… come over whenever,” Hinata echoed, with a slow-growing smile. “And you wouldn’t mind?”
“I—”
Kageyama stopped himself again, because yeah, he totally did say that. And as his brain finally caught up with his mouth, heat ascended up his neck and across his cheeks. His gaze darted immediately to his socks, embarrassed.
“Well, you’re the only person who comes over besides when Nee-san visits, so,” he said, and then one of his hands found its way into his hair, as if moving would get rid of the sudden nervous energy that flooded through him. “It’s—it’s not like it bothers me.”
“It doesn’t?”
“N…not really, no.”
In fact, Hinata’s company was… pleasant, in a way he didn’t expect at all. He’d never been invited to other people’s houses before attending Karasuno, much less invited others to his own house. The only other time he’d gone to someone’s house other than Hinata’s was when they studied at Yachi’s place.
Was it like that for everyone? Did people just enjoy the company of their friends, or… or did it have to be a specific someone? Kageyama didn’t know. He wasn’t good at this whole people thing.
(He wrinkled his nose at the thought of inviting someone like Tsukishima over.)
“I like visiting you,” Hinata told him abruptly, and when Kageyama lifted his gaze, he saw the wide smile stretched across Hinata’s face. “It’s fun.”
“I don’t—” Kageyama shifted awkwardly, uncertain of how to take that. Was it a compliment? “I don’t really do anything special, though.”
“Well, even if we don’t do anything, it’s fun spending time with you,” Hinata said. “I like y—um, I like your company.”
If possible, Kageyama’s face grew even hotter. He looked away again, just because he wasn’t sure if he could handle looking at that bright smile of his.
“I…”
He, what? He didn’t know how to put his thoughts into words.
“Just, um, just get into dry clothes,” came out instead, turning away because—because Hinata needed privacy to change. Yeah. “Then we can, um. Do something together, maybe.”
“Do something?” Hinata said, still wondering. "And you wouldn't mind? It doesn't bother you to hang out?"
“Sh—shut up! I wouldn't—um. I wouldn't... mind."
Of course I wouldn't mind. Of course I want to do something with you.
“I did bring my Switch and our game! Nice and dry in my bag.”
“At least you’re capable of taking care of something.”
“Hey! I’m good at taking care of things,” Hinata defended. “I’m an amazing older brother, just so you know.”
Yes, I know. “Mm. Yeah.”
“Just ask Natsu!” And then, playfully: “You wouldn’t know what it’s like being an older brother because you’re the younger sibling.”
“Wha—why does that even matter, you dumbass?!”
He turned around just in time to see Hinata pull his shirt—Kageyama’s shirt—over his head, and when it fell over his chest, twice his size, he grinned up at him. His bedroom light wasn’t on but Hinata seemed to glow in the dimness anyway: a piece of the sun itself, wedged into the body of one tiny person, shining bright just for Kageyama.
And in that realization, he found his answer to his earlier question:
Nobody was like Hinata. Nobody smiled like him, and nobody’s company felt the same. Hinata Shouyou was in a league of his own, and nobody else compared.

Or: Chaotic besties Hikari and Takeru have their older brothers wrapped around their fingers.
Thunk. Floosh.
Several seconds of silence ensued. Two pairs of eyes met, pooled with mirth and perhaps a little bit of regret. Takeru blew out a giggling sigh, which was a mistake on his part because it sent a puff of flour through the air.
Flour, which caked both of their faces. Because Hikari, in her attempt to measure the amount they needed for the cookie recipe she’d found online, had accidentally tipped the entire bowl, and now they were both covered in it.
And so was the kitchen counter. And the floor.
“Oops,” Hikari whispered, although her expression threatened to break into a grin.
“Oops,” Takeru echoed with a tiny, held-back smile of his own.
“I don’t think that was supposed to happen,” Hikari said.
“...probably not.”
Hikari whisked her gaze around her kitchen, knowing that this mess was mostly her fault but finding it funnier than anything else. So when her composure broke and she finally began laughing, she couldn’t find it in herself to stop.
“You—you look ridiculous,” she gasped out as she doubled over in a fit of giggles.
“Me?” Takeru didn’t even sound offended—just equally entertained by their predicament as he, too, collapsed with laughter. “You look ridiculous! It’s in your hair!”
One of Hikari’s hands found the top of her head, making Takeru laugh harder because she’d only made it worse.
A doorknob jostled. Hikari and Takeru froze at the sound, meeting each other’s gaze again, and Hikari whispered in horror, “Uh oh.”
“We should hide.”
No sooner than Takeru suggested it did they follow through, but neither of them had time to find good hiding places—instead merely settling for ducking behind the counter—before the Yagami apartment door opened and two boys stopped in the entryway to remove their shoes.
“We’re back,” Taichi’s voice called, followed by the sound of shuffling. “There was a long l—oh. Where’d they go?”
“Gotta be here somewhere,” came Yamato’s voice. “Their shoes are still here.”
“Yeah, I see that. I have eyes.”
“Just making s—” Yamato stopped talking, and his footsteps came to a halt as well. Then, in a quieter voice: “...what the hell?”
Hikari bit her lip to keep her laughter at bay. She stayed hidden with Takeru as Taichi voiced his confusion about Yamato’s words, before probably seeing the kitchen for himself.
“Oh my god.”
Yeah. They were so screwed.
“What even happened in here?” Taichi went on. “How d—wait. Hikari, Takeru, I can see you.”
It was only when he stepped around the counter that Hikari started giggling hysterically again. She gave her brother what was supposed to be an guilty look—but, in all honesty, was more cheeky than anything—before drawing herself up to her full height.
“Hi, Nii-san,” Takeru said humbly to Yamato as he stood by Hikari’s side.
“What did you do?” Yamato asked.
“We were…” Hikari paused to scan the flour-covered kitchen with sheepish eyes. “...making cookies?”
Hook.
“Cookies,” Taichi echoed, deadpan.
“Uh huh,” Takeru said with a firm nod. “Cookies.”
Yamato gave Takeru a hopelessly fond look. “Kiddo. We told you we’d be back from the store to make dinner tonight.”
“I even recruited Yamato so Kaa-san wouldn’t kill us with her monstrous cooking,” Taichi added.
“But…” Hikari trailed off as she glanced at her best friend, who pouted. She took this as an opportunity to show off her best pout, too, aiming it at her older brother. “...we wanted something sweet.”
Line.
“Hikari. It’s like, four-thirty. We’re going to be cooking soon.”
“...and?”
Yamato and Taichi shared an exasperated look, which almost elicited another stray giggle from Hikari. Almost. She was still pouting, after all.
“Fine,” Yamato caved, surprisingly before Taichi. He sighed. “After dinner.”
Taichi’s expression turned sour. “Dude!”
“What? I can’t say ‘no’ to that face,” Yamato said and pointed at Takeru’s masterful puppy eyes.
Her brother, however, looked back at Hikari. Her pout deepened, and for a few seconds, Taichi stood strong. But only for a few seconds.
Sinker.
“Ugh, fine. Fine, we’ll make cookies after dinner,” Taichi relented with a sigh of his own. “Now help us clean up.”
Hikari’s pout disappeared in an instant, replaced by a grin.
She waited until both of their brothers’ backs were turned before she gave Takeru a victorious fistbump.

Hinata winced as he pulled on his uniform blazer, the back of his hands stinging. When he looked down at them, he realized why: “Ugh, my hands are so dry.”
“Have you tried using lotion?” Yamaguchi asked, already dressed and standing by the doorway, ready to leave.
“I don’t have any with me,” Hinata admitted with a pout.
Suga winced sympathetically. “Ouch. I’m sorry, Hinata. I don’t have any on me, either.”
Hinata’s pout deepened. He sighed and buttoned up his blazer, studying his hands as he went. It wasn’t even the good kind of sting—the kind that followed a good spike. The nippy October wind probably wasn’t going to help.
“It is getting colder out,” Daichi said. “I’ll try to bring a bottle tomorrow to keep in the club room.”
“Thank you, Daichi-san,” Hinata said, wondering if he even had any at home. His mother probably did, somewhere—if not, well. He’d be stuck waiting until tomorrow.
Something poked his arm. “Here.”
He blinked at the sound of Kageyama’s voice and then blinked again when he saw what had poked him: a medium-sized bottle of hand cream. “Waaaaahhhhh, you have some!”
“Why are you surprised?”
Hinata wasn’t sure. Kageyama took that extra step when caring for his own hands—he even clipped and filed his fingernails, whereas Hinata’s were bitten and uneven. Of course he had hand lotion.
“Are you gonna take it or not?” Kageyama asked abruptly.
“Oh! Yes, thank you!”
Their teammates continued getting dressed and filing out of the clubroom, probably ready for a hot bath and a meal. Hinata, anxious for both as well and knowing their captain was waiting for everyone to finish so he could lock up, hurried to snap the cap open and squirt some into his hands.
Except he must’ve squeezed the bottle too hard because a lot more came out than he intended.
Eek! That’s a lot!
“Dumbass. You don’t need that much,” Kageyama said and gave him an unimpressed look.
“Nobody warned you about me?” Hinata said, voice dripping with sarcasm. “I always use this much.”
“Right. You and your tiny hands.”
Hinata lifted his gaze to meet Kageyama’s fiercely. “It was a joke, you jerk. I obviously didn’t mean to. And—hey! My hands aren’t tiny!”
“I dunno,” Suga commented, eyeing Hinata’s hands. “They’re a little small…”
“Suga-sannnnn!”
“Idiot, give me that,” Kageyama said.
Hinata didn’t get a chance to reply before Kageyama took the bottle back, shoved it under his arm to hold it hands-free, and scooped half the lotion from Hinata’s palm to use for his own hands.
“There,” he said when he was done rubbing it in. “Oi. Don’t just stand there.”
Hinata realized after several seconds that he was staring at Kageyama with his mouth open. He squeaked and slathered it over his fingers and palms, wincing again at the sting. “Ouch…”
“It’s probably going to hurt a little bit because your hands need to heal,” Daichi pointed out.
“You should keep a bottle with you,” Kageyama told him. “You need to keep your skin moisturized.”
Hinata nodded, looking down at his hands as he continued to work the cream into his skin, cheeks traitorously hot. He tried not to think about the way Kageyama’s fingers, long and warm, felt against his palm as he took half the lotion so it wouldn’t go to waste.
As promised, Daichi brought a bottle of lotion for the club room the following morning for everyone to use when needed. But what Hinata couldn’t get over was that Kageyama also brought an extra bottle—one specifically for Hinata—and told him to apply it regularly.
He appreciated their captain’s kindness along with the rest of the team, but it was Kageyama’s generosity that left him feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

ch summary: Hinata goes to a sporting goods store with Kageyama before practice on a Saturday morning. He spots Karasuno merch while they're there.
entire drabble below. :) find the whole collection on: ao3 // tumblr
Hinata’s eyes went wide as he drew in all the sports equipment in the store, mouth slack. He stood completely still for all of three seconds before he jumped into the air with a gleeful whoop.
“This is a huge store, Kageyama,” he said as he landed, vibrating with excitement. “The only one I knew about is tiny!”
“Fitting,” Kageyama deadpanned. “And don’t—don’t jump like that indoors. People are staring, you idiot.”
“I can’t help it—I’m psyched! Besides, I usually can’t afford more than what’s necessary, when it comes to volleyball stuff. I didn't think they'd have so much.”
As he spoke, he ventured farther inside the store, taking in all of what surrounded him with varying levels of enthusiasm. There was, of course, more than just volleyball equipment in the store, but once he located the volleyball equipment, everything else seemed to disappear. Just like all the sports he’d tried as a child when he discovered volleyball.
And goodness, there was so much of it. Knee pads, athletic tape, different kinds of volleyballs, compression sleeves and socks, court shoes…
“Woah,” he gasped out in awe as he caught sight of the store’s line of apparel. “They have Karasuno hoodies? Wow! And Shiratorizawa! It says Shiratorizawa Academy Volleyball Club! And Aoba Jousai, and—”
“Why wouldn’t they have apparel for local school teams?” Kageyama interrupted with a brow arched. “Especially Shiratorizawa. They have one of the top three spikers in Japan. Look, they also have stuff for universities in Sendai.”
Hinata looked up at the hoodies in open adoration, eyes sparkling. “This is so cool.”
He continued staring for a few seconds but yelped when Kageyama veered off in another direction, and Hinata was quick to follow, not one to be left behind. It wasn’t long before they got what they came here for—new knee pads. Hinata also picked up some compression sleeves for his knees just because they reminded him of Bokuto, but his gaze lingered in the apparel section as they made their way back up front.
He stumbled into something solid after a few seconds and realized, belatedly, that Kageyama had stopped walking. He’d stopped walking and he was looking at Hinata.
“What?” Hinata asked, a bit self-conscious.
“If you want a hoodie so bad, go grab one,” Kageyama said, raising his brows again. “You’re always complaining about being cold, anyway.”
Hinata blinked up at Kageyama and then turned back to the Karasuno hoodies. It only had one wrack, unlike other schools, alternating between black fabric with orange characters and orange fabric with black characters.
A tempting idea. Very tempting. Still… “How much do you think they are?”
“Beats me. Go look.”
Hinata stuck out his tongue with a pout but complied nonetheless. It wasn’t long before he returned, crestfallen, to the spot where Kageyama stood waiting for him.
“They’re over four-thousand yen,” he said with his shoulders slumped.
“So?”
“So,” Hinata emphasized, “I can’t afford everything and a hoodie.”
“Then I’ll buy it for you.”
Hinata’s eyes blew wide. Kageyama shrugged nonchalantly as he said the words, and he said them so easily, without hesitation. And when Hinata failed to respond—only gaped at him like he was some kind of mythical creature—he frowned.
“What?”
Immediately, Hinata shook his head, over and over. He was so stunned by Kageyama’s words that he dropped what he was holding. “You don’t—I mean, I couldn’t ask you to do that!”
“You didn’t ask, dumbass,” Kageyama pointed out, bending over to pick up what had slipped from Hinata’s limp grip. “I offered.”
That was true. Something about Kageyama buying him something from here felt… weird—not bad, but odd in a way he couldn’t explain. Or… or perhaps odd wasn’t the right word. Profound, maybe. Like this was some kind of a new step in their friendship.
“I mean… you don’t have to accept if you don’t want,” Kageyama said awkwardly as he handed the knee pads and compression sleeves back to Hinata. “I just—well. Kozume got you that game, right? Buying… buying things for each other, that’s what friends do, right?”
Hinata blinked again. “Oh, um… sure. Yeah, I guess.”
That’s different, he wanted to say, except he wasn’t even sure why.
And maybe admitting that out loud would hurt Kageyama’s feelings. But it was true—Hinata’s relationship with Kenma was different than Hinata’s relationship with Kageyama. They were… well.
He felt things for Kageyama that he didn’t feel for Kenma. Things he didn't even understand.
“Ok,” Kageyama said, oblivious to Hinata’s inner turmoil. “Go get the one you want, then.”
“Will you get one, too?” Hinata blurted out without thinking.
It was Kageyama’s turn to blink. He did so several times, expression pinching together in confusion, before he tilted his head to the side and asked, “Why?”
“I dunno. It’d be… cool to match, I guess. What do you think?”
“Oh.” A pause. “Ok. Sure.”
Unlike Seijou’s and Shiratorizawa’s apparel, Karasuno’s merch was much closer to the floor and easily reachable without the help of an associate. In the end, Hinata picked the black one with orange characters, while Kageyama picked the orange one with black characters.
The strange anxiety in his chest eased slightly after everything was paid for, and when they got outside, Hinata was eager to climb into his new hoodie.
“Whoa, it’s so warm,” he said with a hum of delight. “Thanks, Kageyama!”
Kageyama frowned at him. “Idiot. Don’t you think you should wash it first?”
“I wanted to see how it fit!”
“Why’d you buy such a big size, anyway? It swallows you.”
“So we could trade if we ever wanted to!”
Kageyama paused in his steps, blinking some more. “Huh?”
A gasp a few feet away captured Hinata’s attention, stealing his response. His gaze darted in the direction of the sound, seeing an unfamiliar girl put a hand to her chest as she faced an equally unfamiliar boy.
“...you got me flowers?” she asked, appearing and sounding touched. “Ryo-kun, you shouldn’t have!”
“I wanted to,” the boy—Ryo-kun, apparently—replied.
“You’re confusing,” Kageyama said, pulling Hinata’s attention back to him. “C’mon, we have Saturday practice at one.”
He didn’t wait for Hinata to respond before he started walking off. Hinata adjusted his grip on the sack in his hand and let out an indignant noise. “Wha—hey, wait for me!”
Not flowers, but… Hinata snuck a glance at the orange fabric peaking out of Kageyama’s sack as he caught up with him easily. …it feels kinda the same.
