I honestly cannot even begin to think what kind of power Akainu could have. His name translates to “Red Dog”, doesn’t it? Kizaru = Yellow and his power is light (and his kicks and lasers are yellow). Aokiji = Blue and his power revolves around ice based tricks. Akainu must have something red.

blogquantumreality answered: I normally watch with the sound off because hearing the Japanese just screws up my lipreading when reading the subtitles. Even so, Kizaru grated on my nerves, because he looks and acts annoying - being all “ooh I’m totes Mr. Fake Laid-Back and then FZZZZOOOWWWWWW ha ha suck eggs. ”When I saw this, I was quite shocked to see Luffy ordering his nakama away from Sabaody Archipelago. Never once before has he given up on a fight, and now here he is, essentially conceding the Straw Hats are no longer capable of simply steamrollering the opposition.:O <– That was my reaction basically.

I was shocked but also proud of Luffy for being sensible and considering the safety of his crew over his own pride. I am also happy this has happened. The Strawhats need another set back. Stories are always more interesting when the heroes have to struggle to achieve what they want. ^_^

So grateful. You have no idea how much that trope annoys me. It is so common in shounen manga, I was not expecting Oda to subvert it. I’m also pretty happy it happened, plot-wise. It gets boring when the heroes become too strong. They need something to strive for.

Also, in a funny way, Moria’s last words to them were prophetic. The New World really has flattened them and they’ve only just got there.

As for Chopper, he never appeared in the East Blue Saga, hence his lack of appearances.  The Alabasta Saga, on the other hand, rectified this oversight.

I am also glad to see Chopper gets his fair share of colour spreads in the future. I just had no idea how many chapters it took for Oda to reach Alabasta.

slaxtheraven answered: OKAY time to clear the confusion. The name of Kizaru’s fruit is Pika Pika no Mi in Japenese. Pika is an onomatopeia for light/glint/glimmer. Official English name of it is Glint Glint fruit, however many people just call it the light fruit/logia. (Chu is a Japanese onomatopeia for the sounds of mice, hence Pikachu. Rai in Raichu means thunder.)

Kizaru crack theory: he’s on crack.

Kizaru mentioned the name of his fruit in 404. CR translated it as the Glint Glint fruit. I like that word. I like Pika too. Lots of excellent sparkly sounding light words. ^_^

Despite some arguing that there is faulty logic, I’ve actually been able to make sense out of the physics displayed in the series, at least within Canon. For example, Kizaru’s light speed kick is heavily argued as not being actual speed of light provided it’s destructive capacity is nowhere near where it should be, however, it follows the theory of relativistic speed provided that light has virtually zero mass itself. For something to move at the speed of light it cannot have mass, but when something with mass approaches the speed of light it, in theory, creates relativistic mass, greatly increasing the mass of the object in motion. For an example on how something with no mass would react to a subject we need only look at Kizaru’s lasers which merely pass through their target, with the heat from the light itself causing it to burn them. When the beam reaches something it cannot pass through, such as an island or a mangrove, it comes to a halt, however there is still energy behind it and that rapidly expanding energy, or heat, creates an explosion.

There are still at least 6-7 locations Strawhats are very very likely to visit before THE BIG EVENT at the end (can you guess what it will be?). Also, there’s been sooo many places mentioned througout the story that will never probably be fully shown it’s sad =( Oda keeps introducing new places where other characters are doing things but simply doesn’t have time to go in-depth with every one. Oh well, there’s at least 10 more years of One Piece to go, so enjoy the ride! (Saying this, I remembered that the recent arc in OP took roughly 30 months… damn)

The Big Event will be Blackbeard vs Luffy when they both crews land at Raftel and Luffy will become the Pirate King! :D

It’s fairly random. It’s mostly based on how much time I have. If I don’t have a lot of time, I’ll have to watch one and write. (Writing takes much longer than watching). Sometimes, though, I catch the preview of the next episode or there is a hella cliffhanger and I just can’t resist watching, even if I have no time. xD

It’s usually one or two at a time. Wednesdays and Thursdays are always busy for me, so a post on those days will be rare. ^_^

sparktehfox answered: Regarding canon, I think it’s best to stick with the term “filler” over blatantly labeling them as non-canon until we get clarification given filler CAN be canon, but it’s not so important to the story that it matters. So far Oda has only stated that Strong World is “Luffy’s last adventure as a 17 year old” and the biggest argument against Strong World is that Zoro isn’t showing his injuries but as you’ll see by this arc, those aren’t holding him back much anyway and he stopped wearing bandages the moment they left Thriller Bark. Regarding Film Z, the movie has a bit of world building but it takes a completely different turn in transitioning from the arcs which literally leave no room for a movie in between. On this Oda had stated that he would have liked for Film Z to be canon, however, to not cause confusion for those following the series, it cannot be. Regarding the upcoming movie, Foxy and crew are going to be the main antagonist by trapping the Strawhats in a Davy Back Fight on an Island where Devil Fruit Powers are nullified. While it’s production looks more like a “TV Special” than a feature length film, the plot seems like it will be interesting.

Luffy’s last adventure as a seventeen year old, eh? I wonder if that’s literal or metaphorical?

As for the upcoming movie, I’m actually alright with the Foxy Pirates. I usually hate it when a crappy movie villain is introduced (there’s always too much hype) only to be defeated in ninety minutes. At least I know there’ll be humour with them. :)

cheffailure answered: Regarding halfway points, as a frame of reference, you would have reached Ch. 491 out of currently 807 chapters.  As for the series’ completion rate, a recent interview with Oda’s editor claimed that One Piece is about 70% done, but given that this was not from Oda himself, I suspect there are still additional concepts waiting to be expanded upon.

I also see that people are arguing about the canon status of Strong World.  I’ll just say that Oda has given it its own Log Book (a magazine series dedicated to One Piece that supplies young, late-to-the-party manga readers with chapters, recap summaries, merchandise, and interviews at a cheaper price).  An interview inside has Oda state: “And as far as something that will hold true for both the comic and the anime, (Strong World) will be Luffy’s [REDACTED FOR SPOILERS]…” 

Arguments for Strong World being canon include the above quote, Oda’s special treatment for it (including said Log Book), the main villain having been mentioned in the Manga, Chapter 0, and interviews stating that he didn’t have the time to do this story, but presenting it as a movie was a golden opportunity.

Arguments against Strong World being canon include translation issues and ambiguity of said quote, continuity errors, potential plotholes, little mention of Strong World elsewhere in the Manga, and whether or not Oda’s involvement in the film is proof of validation (as many filler characters were designed by the man himself).

All in all, it’s up to you to decide.

Fun Fact:  Oda initially planned for One Piece to last just five years. It wasn’t long before he realized he was having too much fun to stop.

It was a shame, really. I swear Oda just meant it as a jokey moment but it didn’t come off too well. The more he uses Sanji’s chivalrous side as a joke, the worse it makes Sanji look. :(

Wordplay like this are freaking everywhere in One Piece.

I really wouldn’t recommend that you listen to the One Piece Podcast anytime soon. They are an insightful bunch who dissect scenes with scalpels, but they are too up-to-date for people like you.  Even the recaps will have you lost down the line.  Funnily enough though, it was an article written by one of those guys that led me to your blog.

Oh, and don’t let us oversell movies too much.  I’ve seen what hype can do.

I´m gonna check Thriller Bark, too. so don´t listen to it yet just to be safe. Oh and to anti-hype strong world, the main villain should have been way more powerful… or should he? (cue mysterious sound effect)

That’s still excellent that Oda wrote the lyrics to the song. That guy really does put absolutely everything into his creation. It’s admirable.

Since most of you guys have been recommending movies four and six, I ended up watching that instead. Damn, it took an unexpectedly creepy turn. o_o  Apparently, the One Piece Guide says to wait until at least 426. I will be patient and wait for my canon. xD

Re. the OPP: I listened in on the Thriller Bark readthrough and there be spoilers (or at least one, I listened only to the beginning…) And while it isn’t a massive spoiler, it is something that becomes a plot-point later on and is one of those nice details that interconnect the whole story. I don’t know how you’ll see that, but I would not have liked to be spoiled for that one…

As for movies, I would watch movie 6, if I were you. It is well worth the watch and fits quite nicely between Thriller Bark and the coming arc even though that is not its intended place. And this way you can save Strong World for after you have seen its back-story, which in my opinion makes the film better. Also, while it is rather jarring to watch Strong World in chronological order of the releases as there are many things happening in the story at that point, it is also a nice little respite to see the crew up to their old tricks… :)

The teamwerk was strong in 370 and 371. So strong, it had to have its own heading. xD  It was a shame, really. The Strawhats were fab. Moria was just too tricky for them.

WoT is fantastic. I’ve only read books one and two. I would like to read three, but I made this stupid promise to support local libraries. They’re making it really difficult to stick to it. It has taken over a month to deliver the book from a library ten minutes away. When it had reached the three-week mark, I called and said I’d travel to pick it up because... it’s ten minutes away. They said I can’t because it’s “in transit”.

doctorvix answered: Shichibukai bounties are a bit of a mess cuz sometimes WG recruiting rookies at the start of their career, like it was revealed in SBS as soon as Croc start wrecking shit on Grand Line WG immediately offered him a position as one of the Shichibukai. His bounty got frozen on the 81 million mark, and by it seems kinda low. And sometimes they recruit pirates that being active for years or even decades and they already have a big bounties… So yeah Shichi bounties are even more more useless. PS: a bit of non spoiler SBS trivia Croc was a Shichibukai for almost 20 years and very well may be THE FIRST Shichibukai =)
