Heh, funny to hear that you had some conflicting thoughts about Garp.  I was surprised myself when I read about people who gave the old man shit for letting Ace stay imprisoned.  Hopefully, you’ll get to see more of this relationship in the future.  Maybe you’ll stay irritated, maybe you won’t.  Who knows?  Still, it puts a whole new dimension as to why Garp wanted Ace and Luffy to become Marines, doesn’t it?

Funnily enough, I probably Buggy about 95% compared to most of the audience’s 100%.  It’s not about him, it’s just related to personal philosophy.   Enthusiasm is contagious though, and you’ll probably love him even more than you already do. I actually do now.

I definitely don’t hate Garp. I understand completely what he is doing. It’s not his fault Ace set himself on the path of piracy. Garp has his Marine family to look out for too. He’s torn in two, and it’s sad, but Ace made his bed and he’ll have to lie in it, sad as it is. ;_;

Yeaaaah, those are both quite different. Seems the fansubbers take greater liberties when translating. It sounds funnier, but it’s not at all accurate.

Some of them are reaching, but, damn... a lot of those are eerily on the money. Maybe Oda does take inspiration from western sources, after all. 1-3, then 6 (plus 4, to a lesser extent) are all good points.

Unfortunately, this happened as I wanted him to watch Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure with me T-T we managed to do both anyway XDDI think that it’s thanks to Buggy’s devil fruit, which renders him invulnerable to blades, that they were able to fly around like that. Sorry for the lack of updates. I was invited for another one of those interviews, so was preparing for it. Then it dawned on me: why am I putting myself through interview torture if I already have an offer for the place I want to go to? I declined all the others and accepted a firm place. Regarding Hancock, her love for Luffy is a rather slippery slope with part of the fandom and there’s a pretty big divide on what people think will happen as time goes on. Now, Luffy isn’t completely ignorant. He knows what love and marriage are, but that will be addressed later. On another note, how do you think future events will go for Hancock? If she doesn’t go with Luffy, she’ll die, but if she does then she’ll lose her place as a Shichibukai and jeopardize her people. Also, Nyon is seen as an outcast because she left the Island without a successor. Well, until we get a few of these answers I will tell you that you shouldn’t take Hancock’s fantasies as too serious. She’ll calm down a bit as time progresses.

There’s that pattern of the old mentor dying in battle to make way for the younger ones. There’s Ben Kenobi and Luke Skywalker. Don’t want to mention the ones from three of the big shounen I have in mind (in case I spoil anyone) but I am afraid for Whitebeard. All the signs are there.

I loved the Water 7/Enies Lobby arc. It had everything: a shady organisation, political corruption, a town in trouble saved by the genius and generosity of one man and his group of clever apprentices, a brilliant villain and Robin. Oh, Robin.... *_* I think Alabasta is a close second (dat political intrigue and attempted coup). Thriller Bark is third. (Mainly because of Moria and Kuma).

cheffailure answered: The interesting thing is, when someone on the the SBS asked for Hancock’s information, Oda made all details relating to romance (such as horoscopes and blood type, which Japanese people are apparently big on) to match up with Luffy’s.  Even her namesake came from Thomas Hancock, the man who founded the British rubber industry.  Naturally, this leads to absolute zilch in One Piece.  And don’t worry about the love jokes - both her Warlord title and over-exaggerated infatuation are justifiable.  Just don’t quote me on that for everyone.Hancock also remains surprisingly popular up to this day, at least in Japan.  She managed to land 10th place in the most recent popularity poll, which had taken place in a very… charged time.  A fantastic job, but competition was tough for quite a few reasons.  Not that you’ll reach that point anytime soon.

446 is excellent because it contains Vikings and a cute warrior seal and warrior walrus noble steed team. Plus Zoro’s cloak. Dat cloak.

449: Nami. That is all. Goals.

454: Love the movement in this one. So much action. Oda captures it well. And check out Chopper egging them on, bloodlusted lil’ reindeer. xD

457: Robin looks awesome here. As does Sanji. Chopper suits a black hat. I know he could never change it because Dr Hiluluk gave it to him, but he looks good.

464: This is golden. Probably my favourite. For some reason, I am drawn to Sanji’s waistcoat.

471: The colour in this one is beautiful. I love that Zoro is drinking with an orca. I guess orcas do have chill, after all. Who knew? xD

483: I want a go on that pig boat.

shashoom2-0 answered: I’m probably one of the few people who genuinely liked the Hancock love thing. It’s silly, it’s funny, and honestly, it works. Hancock’s seldom seen genuine compassion and heart from men so she would confuse feelings of admiration or friendly affection as love. Not every character has to be this badass character who is only driven by a goal, some people are like this, some characters will be like this; it doesn’t diminish their worth nor does it make for a bad character. Plus, as stated before, Hancock was ranked as the 10th most popular character (and no, it’s not just for the boobs, otherwise Robin would be rated much higher) meaning people, at least the Japanese audience, think this character trait worked really well. So what I’m trying to say is that at the end of the day, Oda wanted to write a likable character and he did it.

I still like her, don’t get me wrong! I was just relieved her love for Luffy was just a part of her personality, rather than the whole of it. I’ve read most of the big shounen anime and I was afraid (still am a bit) that Oda would sacrifice her to one of the male characters. He hasn’t, so it’s okay. ^_^

Also Hancock’s love makes perfect sense. She shot Luffy with a Mellow Mellow beam but he’s made of rubber so he’s resilient (figuratively). He reflected it and Hancock was the one who got shot, similarly to Cupid’s arrows :P

You might have missed it, but in previous replies I said I think I might have been spoiled by a random who messaged me some ‘spoilers’ way back. Round about the time I was watching Drum Island. Maybe before then. They told me three things. One was Gol D. Roger is Luffy’s father. Obviously not true. The second thing was Usopp leaves the crew and returns to his village. Partly true. Since those were either false or only partly true, I thought the third thing would be a load of shit, but recent plot developments have me worried. I’ve been making theories based on it possibly coming true. :(

It’s not that I think he’ll stop being badass. It’s the “Old Mentor Dies/Retires/Is Incapacitated to Make Way for Whippersnappers” trope. I can see Oda preparing it now. It’s happened a lot in the big shounen manga (don’t want to mention them in case some people haven’t read/watched).

paddster answered: And this is where my Problem with Hancock comes from, she has the negative aspects of two extreme sides one being all in love with luffy and the other being a bad person.To me personally she still is a villain but the OPverse treats her like one of the good guys. Sure she helps out Luffy, but only because she´s in love with him. She hasn´t learned anything from his compassion or his sacrificial behaviour. She still treats her people badly.

Also I hate that she has to fall in love with someone… why not admire Luffy and take him as an example that no matter what happens to one one can show compassion and help. Heck it would fit perfectly into OP where most of the bad guys in some way or another become good guys (HachI, Helmeppo, Jacko, baroque works) why not show it in the main story after we´ve seen it in cover stories several times.

I mean I can understand her character, that she despises men and always wants to be in control after being oppressed her whole childhood, but we´ve seen with nami (who despite being treated terrible by racists never herself became one) that while understandable a tragic past isn´t a get out of jail free card. Yet everyone treats her like she does the right thing. Even Luffy, after at one point saying he doesn´t like her for how she acts, never mentions it again.

Sorry for the rant but I was looking forward so much to a both physicaly and mentally strong female (and to be fair physically she is damn strong).

As for Hancock, I totally get where you’re coming from. Those were my fears. At least Hancock’s character never did a 180. She’s still a powerful villain with undesirable character traits. I would have been more mad if Oda had erased those traits “because love”. And I never considered the example of Nami in contrast.

While there will be a crap ton of characters with the fight with Whitebeard, the story does try to keep things focus such as all of it happening on one location and keeping everyone’s motivation simple to understand. Whitebeard and his allies want to save Ace. The marines want to kill him. So it shouldn’t be too confusing for you to follow.

Haha, like School Rumble, or something similar. Always loved that anime. So, so funny.

And that is encouraging. With so many characters, keeping motivations simple is key. Still nervous that it will all go wrong, but so many OP fans seem to love this arc.

infriga answered: I think littlebunny123world exaggerated a bit. I watched the anime before the manga & it didn’t affect how I perceived character strength. I can think of maybe 2 fights that are made more challenging because the anime added to them. And one was actually improved imo and to me didn’t change which character I viewed as obviously stronger. The other one did make the enemy seem stronger than they were in the manga, I’ll admit that, but it’s not as wide-spread an occurrence as some people would say it is. At least, not to a degree that would seriously alter character ranking.

I guess it doesn’t matter that much then. I won’t know, anyway, and if I do make any theories based on the anime’s inaccurate portrayal of a character, then you guys can just hand me some manga facts. :)

Predictions:

Hancock said if Luffy fights his hardest, she’ll let him leave the island. Luffy will win against her sisters and she’ll give him a lift to Marineford.

Strong = beautiful, so Luffy will end up the most desirable catch on Amazon Lily. xD

At Marineford, if all the shichibukai will be there, I will foam with excitement. I’ll get to see Moria again!

The Strawhats will meet again at Marineford. (Fingers crossed).

If the next arc after this is Impel Down, I’ll get to see Crocodile and Bon Clay again! (No Buggy, though. My inaccurate timeline dreams have been shattered. ;_;)

I’ll get to see Blackbeard again. If Whitebeard makes his move, this means there’s a high chance they will clash. If Whitebeard knows Blackbeard brought Ace in, he will be fucking furious. I am hyped for that fight. Looking forward to that more than anything. Dat Blackbeard. So, so evil...

supramp9000 answered: I recommend against watching the episode previews for the forseeable future.  I can’t quite remember how they go from here on out, however it’s entirely possible they give away important scenes too early. Boa Hancock is incredibly powerful, and has been hardened by the world to use her gifts and talents in whatever way she deems best if it would guarantee the continued prosperity of her kingdom, no matter who she hurts in the process.  How do you redeem that, I wonder? By the time you respond to this I imagine that you’ll have become a bit more certain on your feelings for her. Me?  I think she’s hilarious.

She was hilarious this episode. Swooning with horror when Luffy straight up told her she sucked. xD I do like that she is a strong leader who will (hopefully) use her talents to protect her kingdom. Actually, that is the deal breaker for me. She can chuck all the old ladies out of the window that she wants. If she fights at Marineford, I’ll like her. If she doesn’t, we’re done. xD

Will WB rescue Ace or will Ace die? Not sure. This is something I can’t comment on, in case my fears about something come true. :\

Other factions involved in the fight? Don’t see Revolutionaries wading in. They haven’t had much screen time yet. I think Oda will save them for post-Yonko plotlines. Shanks might get involved, since he was ferrying messages back and forth to WB, re Blackbeard. He hates BB and I imagine he’d want revenge for the scar. I don’t think the other two yonkos will get involved. Mostly because there’s been chat around here concerning them and I know they’ve only just been revealed in the manga. I don’t see the Supernovas getting involved, unless there’s something in it for them. Like a connection to someone in Impel Down, or something. I think (I hope) the Strawhats will reunite at Marineford to help Luffy, whether that’s rescuing Ace, fighting in the battle or helping him storm Impel Down.

He’s a clever fighter, though, you must admit. And he has a lot of emotional intelligence. He has been smart enough to navigate the dangers of the Grand Line (though a lot of that has been down to his amazing crew). I don’t think he’s a secret genius, but he’s still clever in the ways Luffy needs to be clever, if that makes sense.
