Can I share my take on Frankenstein (2025)? I think the message Del Toro wanted to convey would have fit much better in a story like The Island of Dr. Moreau, especially considering the changes he had to make to Shelley’s novel to align it with his theme.

He wanted a creator who is indifferent to his own creation, and with Moreau he could have explored much more effectively the idea that “the real monster is the creator, not the creature.” Moreau believes himself superior to his beasts and treats them like a distant god. In the novel, Victor actually feels guilt toward his creature (something the film version only shows on his deathbed).

Del Toro also could have developed more deeply the theme of the monster as neither one thing nor the other, which fits perfectly with Moreau, where the creatures are neither animals nor humans—especially since, to use this theme, he had to make the monster immortal. Finally, in the book Victor is a dreamer-scientist whose ideal turns into a nightmare; in the film, he becomes a cold, rational figure—traits that belong, rather, to Moreau.

Who do you think is a better mad scientist? Jekyll or Frankenstein?

If I can only choose between the two of them I'd have to give it to Jekyll. Victor is barely a mad scientist, he's a reckless kid who bit off more than he could chew and then spent the rest of his life regretting it. He's like a 2/10 on the mad scientist scale. He's score higher if didn't immediately give up on pursuing the creation of life the minute his experiment failed. All in all he's too sane and normal to have any kind of long term credibility as a mad scientist. (weird to say because I think he's definitely mentally ill) Jekyll experiments on himself and ends up creating an alter ego so he can be evil without consequences. He also uses himself as a test subject. I think there's just a better case for Jekyll/Hyde than there is for Frankenstein. Jekyll is at least a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. But honestly I don't think either of them have anything on Griffin the Invisible man or Dr Moreau. Griffin is a violent egomaniac out for world conquest and a reign of terror (love that for him, you go for it you sick fuck, you absolute freak). He's also got that theatrical flare and there's a lot of fun you can get out of him as a character 10/10 and Moreau is like if Victor was committed to the playing god bit and had zero sense of ethical standards. Instead of being horrified by the abominations he creates in the defiance of god and nature Moreau decides to enslave and abuse them. He doesn't have Griffin's charm. he's probably the most straight horrific of the group and honestly the lack of a fun element costs him a point. 9/10
