Young dragons are easily distracted by shiny objects—a trait most outgrow with age. Still, it's a handy trick for older dragons to keep their young ones occupied with a bit of gold, if only to keep them from wandering off.

Jaskier, for a dragon, is still quite young. So when they’re up on the mountain, Borch quickly picks up on their shared nature. There’s a kinship there—dragon recognizing dragon. Though, to his amusement, Borch is surprised the witchers haven’t figured it out yet.

Geralt, for his part, remains oblivious. He has no idea why Borch keeps gifting Jaskier bits of glittering jewelry. But if it keeps the bard quiet and close by, he’s not about to question it.

Jasker is a dragon, sure. But he prefers his human form. He prefers pretty clothing and lutes over his scales and wings. He hasn't a hoard yet. He thinks. He's never truly cared for gold, though he knows that not all dragons have hoards of gold. That's just the default. What if he did have a hoard, and it just wasn't some boring old gold pieces? At first he thought his hoard must be his many exuberant outfits, but when he got into a scuffle and one outfit was ruined, he was disappointed but that was it. There was no anguish, no mourning, no big depressive meltdown over it's destruction... So probably not a hoard. Just an interest. He then thought it must be his songs. But when he heard a bard in some town playing one of his songs, he didn't erupt into scales and roars. He didn't burn down a city. He didn't even rip out his hair or anything. He wasn't even mad. He thinks you'd be more possessive and jealous over a hoard. He was mostly proud. The bard said it was a song he didn't write, he said it was by Jaskier, and he sang it quite well. But even if he didn't do any of those things, Jaskier would be mad, sure, maybe even mad, but never MAD. He thought of lovers being his hoard, but the thought went away very quickly. None of his lovers stay, and though it stings sometimes, he thinks he'd be flinging himself off a cliff if a treasure of his hoard literally got up and walked away from him. And then one day he meets a Witcher. The witcher looks at him with these piercing golden eyes, and Jaskier feels an audible shift in his soul, his being. He found it. His treasure. Maybe witchers are his hoard, and Geralt is just his first one. Maybe his hoard is just friends he meets. He doesn't know, all he knows is that he can't stop himself from staring at the gold of Geralt's eyes. Perhaps Jaskier does care for gold.

okay so i have been reading a lot of witcher! jaskier fics and also all of the other ones where jaskier is long lived and geralt doesn’t know (this is also operating on the knowledge from s1 and s2 of the netflix series) and i read one ages ago about jaskier knowing vesemir from when he was younger so i bring you dragon! jaskier and emotionally hurt vesemir 🥰

vesemir: *not moving as he sees a familiar face*

jaskier: OLD FRIEND!!!

geralt: *watching in horror as jaskier tackles vesemir and the old wolf just lets it happen*

vesemir: you were gone you bastard

jaskier: i thought YOU were dead! how was i supposed to know geralt’s fighting wasn’t just standard wolf training? eskel and lambert do the same thing!

eskel: he trained us all but back up for a second, how do you know vesemir?

jaskier: i used to travel with him! back when dragons were more common anyway

vesemir: dear melitele julian, let me breathe for a moment?

jaskier: *hanging on even tighter* no 🥰🥰🥰

lambert: what the fuck?

jaskier: have you been lonely the whole time? you know guxart is probably still around if aiden’s still alive, right?

aiden: you know old guxart too?

jaskier: KNOW him??? i know too much about that old cat! vesemir, remember that time-

vesemir: *tries to smother jaskier*

geralt: *grabs jaskier* hey that’s MY bard

vesemir: *snatching jaskier back* and that’s MY dragon

jaskier: so you do still like to cuddle!!!!!

basically after the sacking jaskier thought vesemir was dead so he never came back to kaer morhen and vesemir thought jaskier was dead because he hadn’t seen or heard from another dragon in a few centuries

also just a random thought that originally witchers weren’t supposed to travel alone, whether that be another immortal creature or their fellow witchers, but jaskier found his way into kaer morhen and latched onto vesemir right away and then everything else happened

also at that point the other wolves should know jaskier but in dragon form but that’s a plot hole i don’t want to touch rn i just like the idea of jaskier being older than the others and still this bubbly excitable bard

Came across this scrolling Facebook and oh my God... Jaskier... JASKIERS FACE!! that last line, you know exactly what face he would make saying that to Geralt.

"So what are you then if not human?" Geralt asked slow, eyes narrowed in a way that made Jaskier feel naked and... ohh boy now wasn't that novel because Jask knows he's not shy, he'd gladly walk nude if allowed but... this was different.

"I'm uh... two halves.." He rambled unsure how to explain it because he wasn't a hundred percent sure too. "Two halves dragon."

Geralt raised his brows in disbelief, "Jask that's just a whole dragon..."

A near hysterical laugh escaped his lips at that, oh he said the same thing too. "You'd think so Geralt, YOUD REALLY THINK SO, but alas, my shit-shovelling luck struck the manure motherload cause no. No, two halves of dragon don't make a dragon."

All the hysterical bravado fell away, his shoulders slumped forward as he turned to face the fire. "No, it just makes me... a mistake."

Damn I was anticipating this fic to be only 10,000 words but here we are, only 3,000 words smaller than my 5 chapter long fic.
