Got high and watched How To Train Your Dragon last night and for some reason it was only then when I realized how heartbreaking Stoick’s line “With you doing so well in the ring... We finally have something to talk about” is 

Like Stoick wants to connect with Hiccup. He’s tried so hard: taking him fishing, teaching him how to take down a dragon, even just living in the same house as his son, but they’re so vastly different that they can’t even hold a conversation. Until he hears about Hiccup’s successes in dragon training. And he’s so excited. He can finally connect with his son! But that is such new territory that Hiccup feels awkward and doesn’t answer. And Stoick realizes that even now, he doesn’t have and may never have the son he’s always wanted. So he tries one last thing: Giving Hiccup one last reminder of his mother. The only thing they have in common. And even that fails.

The way Krogan and the Dragon Flyers "train" their dragons and the way Viggo's Dragon Hunters "train" their dragons is making me have several ideas which include applying proper and improper animal taming and training methods (based on how the animals themselves react to it, it's efficiency, all that jazz), and the possible effects of improper handling & training, either mental or physical.

The Dragons from HTTYD were already trained!

(Just a theory...)

In the first movie, Gobber states that 'dragons will always go for the kill', which is debatable because of the bias against dragons, but also because we see the dragons in the training arena NOT go for the kill' several times.

1- Meatlug- while yes she was shooting lava blasts at the kids, but all of her shots hit their shields. Especially when Fishlegs raised his shield above his head, she could have definitely hit him if she wanted to. And finally when she had Hiccup pinned against the wall, she paused. Granted it could be the director making the moment dramatic, but the only in universe explanation would be that she didn't want to hit him, and could hear Gobber coming to Hiccup's rescue. And speaking of Gobber, you're going to tell me that she didn't even take a shot at the one person in the arena with no shield?

2- Stormfly- this girl honestly looks like she's having a good time. Again she's taking very close shots, but she also doesn't seem to be taking it seriously. She even takes a moment to laugh at Snotlout's bad throw.

3- Barf and Belch- these two (one?) didn't even attack with teeth or claws. They let out some gas and sparks, but never actually ignited it. The only aggression they showed was knocking the kids down and getting scared of the eel.

4- the terrible terror was just a menace, but hey, tiny is allowed to be angry.

Point is, none of these dragons 'went for the kill' but why? And how does this tie into them being already "trained"?

We don't know how long those 4 were held captive. Had they been there for years? Had they seen/heard what happens when a dragon does maul a teenager to death? Training to fight dragons is dangerous, but you can't expect a Viking parent just to let the dragon that killed their kid live.

So the dragons were subconsciously trained.

Fight, act aggressive, but don't kill or you will be killed. Give the kids enough practice and the rest of the time you'll be left alone.

Dragon Training - Lesson 34

Today we'll be covering a magnificent dragon that has incredible flying abilities. Meet the Stormcutter, a large Sharp Class dragon.

Thanks to the fact they posses not two, but four wings, Stormcutters are fast and strong flyers, and can fly through thunderstorms with little to no trouble. They have incredibly hard scales, allowing them to take substantial hits without much damage and even recover quickly from crash landings. Stormcutters are also able to hide in clouds, and typically posses scale coloration that allow them to blend in with either a clear morning sky, or a clear night one.

Despite not being a Sharp Class dragon, a Stormcutter's senses are on par with those from the Tracker Class.

Stormcutters shoot sustained, tornado-shaped blasts of fire that are powerful enough to ignite an entire house in seconds. And like Monstrous Nightmares, Stormcutters have flammable saliva.

Highly intelligent, Stormcutters can quickly discern friend from foe. They also know how to pick locks with the hooked fore-talons on their wings.

Curious, confident, sweet, and gentle, Stormcutters are easy to train, as long as you offer them respect and are not a threat. They also like to keep to themselves, preferring not to interact with other species of dragons. Most Stormcutters are diurnal, but certain individuals are active during night hours.

Stormcutters are amazing dragons, and many a rider's favorite. Their powerful flying abilities and generally agreeable nature makes them perfect for beginners and experienced trainers alike.
