Tough Choice
---
I instantly would like to send a special thank to those who made their way to my streams and managed to stay a little longer. Also, there is no proofreading on most of pages, just like I did with other short comics in the past, but I appreciate any support given me, really! ^__^ Enjoy and I do hope my handwriting is readable. Honestly I really didn’t expect it to be that long and very time-consuming (almost two weeks), ahh so much wall of texts haha… x.x
Overall, this comic is about Sans who struggles to decide what to do with his life. A choice is what made Sans become the same person we know in Timetale. And say hi to Drifa, his childhood friend! It’s been quite a while since she appeared in a flashback along with Lil’ Sansy when they headed to the Ruins and met Asriel for the first time. Great emotional support, right? ^^ Poor Doggo tho :C
i was playing just now and brynjolf and drifa stood next to each other and they basically match. dare i say .,. sibligns ?
OH MY GOD
i can See 👀
Norsery Rhymes from A to Z Drifa, The Flurry of Snow
Well here we are on another ThorsDay with another 20 min sketch of a Norse (and Germanic, sometimes Celtic) mythological characters. This week it’s Drifa / Drífa / Driva, a Frost Giant (Jotnar) descendant and mythical queen mentioned in the Orkneyinga saga.
Her name means in Old Norse, ‘snowfall’, or ‘a flurry of snow’, or ‘fall of snow’, or 'snowdrift’, or ‘the driving snow’. All indicating a heavy snowfall. Al from the Proto European ‘dhreybh’ meaning ‘driving’ or ‘drifting’.
She is from a family of Frost Giants (Jotnar / Jotun / Jotunn / Jetten / Eoten / Giant). Each personifications of snow and frost.
She is the daughter of King Snaer (snow). From whom she has two other sisters Mjol / Mjöl / Mjǫll (powdered snow / quick flying snow) and Fonn / Fön / Fǫnn (Snowdrift). And a brother King Thorri / Thori / Þorri (Frozen Snow). Who had a daughter Goi / Gói (thin track snow) and two sons Nór and Gór. Nor (North) being the founder of Norway.
Her Grandfather, Snaer’s father, was Frosti (Frost) or Jökul / Jǫkull (ice, glacier) who was the son of Kári (Lord of Wind, the cold wind, tempest, and curling wind). Kari being the brother of the giants, Aegir the Lord of the sea, Logi the Lord of fire, and Hlér god of sea islands. Though Aegir and Hlér are sometimes considered the same person. Each being the sons Fornjót, a primordial ancient Jotun.
Drifa in the Ynglinga saga tales of the mythological Sweedish kings, lived in Finnland, married to King Vanlandi (Man of the Vanier lands) a decendant of Freyr. Who ruled over the Uplands. They had a son Visbur who would also become king.
There are a few different versions of this tale depending on it’s land of origin, and if it’s more historically based or mythologically based, so I’ll try and consolidate them a bit leaning on the more myth side given that’s kinda why I’m here.
Drifa and Vanlandi met when Vanlandi was staying with Snaer during the winter. After wooing her and asking for her hand from her father, they were married before winters end. In the late spring he set out for his home, promising to return for her as she was pregnant and unable to travel. While he was gone she had a son Visbur. She waited three years in hope, then another seven in sadness. At the end of ten years she sent her son to Sweden to make legitimate his claim to throne and to ask for his father to send for his mother. He had pretty much forgotten about the snow woman he had married. Maybe considering it a dream. He did not send for her at the behest of his counsel and friends. Drifa then sought the counsel of the witch Huld, who sent out magic that Vanlandi should either send for Drifa, come for her, or die in agony. When the spekll was cast, he felt the strong need to go to Drifa, but once again his counselors and friends convinced him otherwise. Then one day after the decision seemed final, Vanlandi felt tired and lay down. He was then sat and walked on by an invisible Mare or Goblin until he died. Visbur would then go on to become King.
Sadly Visbur would follow in his father footsteps of ignoring his first family to the cost of his own life when he disowned his wife and two sons Gisle and Ond / Öndur from his first marriage. This disowning was compounded when Visbur denied them their mothers holdings and gold ornament dowery he had given her at their engagement. They went to the Witch Huld to curse the dowry’s holder with Ill luck and eventual death of even the best person until it was returned, and she agreed. Though it was Visburs new son Domalde who was cursed with this ill luck as he was given the dowry. Gisle and Ond gathered a large group of men and burned down Visburs hall with him inside of it. Though Domalde avoided the blaze, his reign was shorter than most, as king and land are tied together, the curse caused not only his luck to be sour, but the lands as well once he was king. After the people tried everything they could over many seasons but still nothing would grow, it was determined that Domalde was the cause. He was sacrificed to the gods by the people. His young child Domar succeeded him in prosperity. With either the gods negating the curse, or the dowry returned.
Drifa like her father and brothers being personifications of nature living supernaturally long lives would have lived to see all of this. Her son fail like her husband, and her grandchildren struggles. To her Great grandchildren’s long and peaceful reign.
Not to be confused with the giant of the same name or the mythic horse of the same name. The first of which I’ll link to my previous drawings here and here, and the later of which I’ll be sketching a version of in the coming weeks.
