Podflash #4: The Thirteen Letters, Ch. 3
It’s another Podflash Saturday, and instead of going outside in the healthful air and sunshine, or perhaps cleaning my filthy domicile, I felt like reading a segment of the stunning Steve/Bucky Not Easily Conquered Series by @drop-deaddream and @whatarefears. This bit is the last three letters of The Thirteen Letters, chapter 3, Compilation. (Note: this fic was podficced in its entirety by @wolveheart and is posted here.)
Listen to the audio file here.
As ever, podflashes are quickly recorded with no rehearsal, minimal editing and any and all accents are only roughly approximated. FUN!

WTF is a podflash? An idea I had! I’m gonna make it a thing or die trying.

A couple of months back, I did a review for the Not Easily Conquered series. It was only 4 paragraphs, but it is my highest noted post to date. I have literally never been so popular. I always expected that I would have to come back and update it, since the series was incomplete at the time, but, when the last entry posted last week, I knew a separate post would be necessary.
“Not Easily Conquered” is the direct sequel to “A Long Winter”, with “The Thirteen Letters” being a chronological prequel. It tells the story of Steve Rogers' journey to finding out what happened to make Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier, and the inevitable fallout that comes when he does. What I absolutely love about these stories is that, despite the fact that they're chronologically out of order, the order of their publication makes perfect sense. “A Long Winter” is the setup, “The Thirteen Letters” are the rules and the explanations, and “Not Easily Conquered” is the payoff. And, my gosh, did it pay off.
I can honestly say that the only thing that I did not like about this story is the fact that you don't see Steve interacting with his grandkids. You know that they exist, but you don't quite know where they are; you have no idea what they're relationship with their grandfather might be. It's quite possible that I missed a mention of it, but I doubt it. I consider this a super minor detail though, because it doesn't take away from the story.
I appreciated the mention of William Stryker: he never comes on screen, but, as an X-Men fan, I like to hate that guy. I especially appreciate the existence of Alexander Pierce and Brock Rumlow. They're still villains, but the picture of Steve not even attempting to deal with their bullshit was beautiful. Both Rumlow's introduction and reveal were an absolute treat.
I liked Steve's relationship with Natasha mostly because it's something that I felt was so great about Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Allowing them to be such good friends showed me that the Avengers were learning to work together, and Natasha wouldn't be relegated to Cap's love interest. Steve's friendship with Sam was very minor, but I thought it was very well done.
I don't know if they ever talked about what the political ramifications of Natasha's big HYDRA info dump was like on Agents of SHIELD, but it plays out spectacularly in “Not Easily Conquered”. I really have to applaud these authors on the effort that they put into crafting this series, because there was so much win going on in the second act alone, and all I could think about was how well it connected with the setup from the earlier stories. The courtroom scene is definitely the best scene in the entire series.
I love how this series handles Steve Rogers as a bisexual: at no point does he ever try to pick Bucky over Peggy. He loves them both. He will do anything to protect them both, even at his own expense. Steve Rogers' love knows no bounds. I want to talk more about it, but I don't want to spoil too much of tis story for anyone.
I can honestly say that this entire series was a work of art. It was well-written, well-researched, and extremely well-planned. I will continuously recommend it to any and everyone because it is a truly spectacular read.
