Warning For Possible Spoilers for The World Of Ice And Fire, not exactly AKOTSK. Outline of things, finer details to be shared in future.
After Thorin Oakenshield's passing, many decades later, a couple centuries even, at best. Far from Middle Earth, the Druid had traveled again. Her and Thorin's sons were grown, each on their own path until inevitably finding their way back home. Their father's longevity and her own, they were simply boys in many ways, men in the ways needed.
In Westeros, things differed. And they also didn't. The whispers followed, like always. 'Witch'. 'Sorceress'. The ones that said she did blood magic, turned others into things if displeased. Well, not entirely untrue.
Stories were stories. To many just a dark haired young woman passing through. She never proved nor denied the words that followed her, didn't care to.
In the Godswood in King's Landing, finding solitude there after shapechanging into a songbird, flitting in unnoticed. Eretria, had sat alone near the weirwood tree, never having been here much before, the weirwood had been glad to begin sharing what it had witnessed and had stood through.
Prince Baelor had been riding through the Godswood that day, hence how they met. What had had her interest about Baelor Breakspear had been how he spoke to her, his tone was calm, soothing, as if he'd never raised it a day in his life. Kind. Nothing short of courteous.
Ser Donnel accompanying Baelor on his ride had stated the woman was the witch some whispered about.
Baelor had paid it no mind, inquiring where she had come from. She hadn't said specifics but did describe the long distance, expecting to be sent on her way at the very least by someone such as this Prince. It hadn't happened.
He invited her to stay for supper, stating everyone needed the warmth of the hearth once in a while. She'd stayed. Meeting his younger brother Prince Maekar.
After the meal they had spoken, Maekar observed that she didn't speak like one of the small folk. Baelor in turn had said he had noticed, she was no commoner. Inquiring the truth.
Eretria had found it almost amusing. She never shared full details with them, as time progressed had still kept things vague, but had said she knew royalty. Been around many, raised among them even.
The inquiries had still been there, she wasn't from any of the Kingdoms. Perhaps not even from Westeros. Nor Essos. Perhaps it had been the way Baelor spoke, his gaze, the manner he carried himself in. Whatever it had been, it was captivating.
Druids held no loyalty to Kings and Lords of the mortal realm, but to this Prince, had respect. That respect grew the longer she'd stayed around him and his brother.
She had stayed. Bing able to understand any tongue, had eventually shown slivers of power. Meeting the children of Baelor and Maekar had been interesting to say the least.
She had remained as a 'consultant', as the term was agreed, to share about travel, about cultures, and something that had quickly become her favorite: The Godswood.
Eretria grew close to Baelor, he was a man of honor, he did what was right. As Hand Of The King and next in line for the throne. Their conversations revolved around Westerosi politics, travel, customs, and the times where he'd remark the gardens and Godswood had seemed brighter since her presence.
Baelor even had her tend his horse and the rest, animals in general.
What she saw in Baelor, reminded her of Thorin. After weeks it had finally been realized sometime before then.
He may have been born a Prince, but was no spoiled one barking orders and believing himself better, above all or deserving of what he wanted just for having the title. Duty without conviction, rooted in belief, not assignment.
Responsibility to uphold belief that was chosen, not imposed. A rare one, honorable, just, kind without seeking the personal gain. Weight borne with grace.
She had been along to the tourney at Ashford. Been at the trial of seven, watched Baelor choose to stand with a hedge knight. Had witnessed all that followed.
And had felt a heavy weight, somewhere between the cheers, shouted remarks and boos. Hadn't expected to feel shock, so much so that she was unable to move. But it had come, had been there. No tears, no scream, just a heavy dread of knowing.
When it had all been over, slowly, she'd found her way to where she had seen him go. Ser Duncan had been holding him in his arms. He had fallen, and he wouldn't rise again. She'd taken the cracked helm and held it a moment, turning it over in her hands. Staring at the cracked visor for who knew how long.
Couldn't quite recall the things that followed. But had told herself the tears were gone, it would be ridiculous if they came for Baelor. Someone she barely knew, had grown close to yes, more than a friend, more than a mere companion. Weeks maybe, but they had been meaningful. But it was ridiculous. Hardly long enough to mean anything.
After the pyre, Maekar had said "You can heal. You have magic. Why didn't you fucking heal him?"
She hadn't known how to answer. And the tears finally came. Again it was the same. Power and it was all useless, she knew it, it wouldn't have worked. It wouldn't bring back Baelor, it wouldn't bring back Thorin. Not really.
The two were different, but so similar. Somewhere perhaps the line had blurred enough to be reminded of all the reasons why she had felt deeply for the Dwarvish King. Her King. And it had come rushing back when meeting someone so similar.
Too soon reopened old wounds.
Silent, streaming, the tears had flowed. She had lost her husband, and something else she hadn't been able to name. Maekar had lost his wife, and now his brother.
In the silence before anything else came to demand attention they had stood together, each other's hands in their grasp. No words needed, the silence was loud enough.
Eretria chose to remain longer, with Maekar now. Comfort, conversation, company. They grew closer too. She stayed and remained as something close to a wife, not quite, but not a lover either. One term a step too far, the other too common. Both in their own suffering, each other never eased it, never enough to heal, but enough to be reminded the other was there.
Eretria stayed through further deaths and changes. Present after King Daeron ll passed, Aerys l died as well. Leaving Maekar to be crowned.
The Druid traveled from time to time, never too long. Tended the Godswood, kept things alive.
Until Maekar's eventual death in 233 AC. During the Peake Uprising, killed leading the assualt on Starpike. His helm was crushed by a falling stone. His death left no clear heir at the time. The throne eventually fell to Maekar's youngest son Aegon V.
The Druid had found her place again for a while, and found warmth when had never expected to find it again. And hated it as well, knowing at some point, whether old age or as it did, it would have ended.
Never had, and never would cope well with such.
The feelings didn't come easy, and when it did it was rooted deep.
She hadn't stayed to watch Aegon V become King, hadn't stayed in Westeros. She'd left the gardens and Godswood thriving, the animals of the Red Keep and as many as possible along the way happy. The echo of The Hammer And Anvil would stay with her as did the song of Durin. Always.
Meet Anya!! darling little autumn eladrin circle of spores druid <3
If any of you have seen one of my previous ocs, Lenore, you might remember that they were originally based on a renfaire costume I have. Anya is the same!!!! She's actually my first every renfaire costume lol, with a skirt that I handmade :)
The costume has evolved a bit over the years but has kept the same overall vibe, and over the past year since my other two main costumes have associated ocs I decided to make one for her too
Wanted to lean into that sort of autumn forest vibe yknow? red leaves and mushrooms, cottage core adjacent. I think in the summer or early fall she had more of a sunflowery look. Not much else to say apart from that, I don't really have any lore but I imagine she's got a real aloof sort of personality, and usually spends all her time alone in the woods tending to her garden or foraging or what have you. I think she does sometimes come into town to sell flowers and vegetables that she grows throughout the year, and I imagine that that's how she'd get involved with an adventuring party in the context of a campaign/oneshot.
lowk this was finished kinda lazily BUT !!! look at her look at my GIRL !!! This is Morrigan, my bugbear druid for a campaign I'm in soon :] She disguises herself to be Something More Humanoid/Less Monstorous Than A Bugbear, and has a colony of ants she carries w/ her as the last part of her home that'll "speak" to her (also, they revere her as their eldritch god)
The campaign is actually mostly themed/based upon & Inspired by Ukrainian & slavic mythos/folktale, so I think it's a lil silly she's named after an Irish mythological figure- not an intentional contrast when naming her, but I think it's fitting! Helps solidify her as Something Foreign, which ties to her backstory well & also furthers her whole "Uncanny Valley" deal
I remember talking to my dad abt her and seeing his face, I don't remember what I said exactly but I explained a lil abt the uncanny valley thing and he was like "Yeah I was about to say, that sounds like.. really uncanny valley." bcuz it is!! Her disguise isn't meant to be perfect lol- thats why it's all practical stuff like make-up or cloth, minus the rings she uses to make her hands smaller. she's still 7ft tall with off proportions for a person, and honestly even compared to other bugbears she's a little off- she's more willow-y, her neck is longer, her teeth are less tusk-y and more needle-y, she's not quite as fully furred as one ought to be- she's a lil bit of a freak among any group she's in <3 Oh plus her eyes. that's a feylost thing lol
I've rambled enough so here's some of the first sketches I did of her, & if y'all are curious abt her or have any questions feel free to ask !! I love yappin abt my sillies !!!<3
