Okay. So I was thinking about whether this was canon or not and I don’t believe it is, which I think is super interesting, because I totally accepted this before I really thought about it and researched it a bit.

BUT! Look at these two great sources I found. So this one gives the ages of the dwarves in Thorin’s company at the time of the quest. The siblings are all born within ten years of each other (as far as we can tell because some dates aren’t given for some of the dwarves in the books) (also I would like to point out that Fi and Ki ARE the youngest so BITE ME). So, compared to humans, who could have a child every year, dwarves do seem to have less. But why?

So you saw this BECAUSE YOU ALL SHARED THE POST OR COMMENTED EH? So you saw that there could be a lot of traditions and physical anatomy things that slow down the rate that dwarves can have babies. Their gestation period could be 4 years????? Holy Mahal. And there could be a period where the dwarves don’t have sessy time after the baby is born. Also, it takes a long time (compared to humans) for dwarves to reach sexual maturity and that time doesn’t last forever. So while Ki and Fi have 6 years between them, it’s more common for there to be 9-10 years between siblings. So (according to the scholar), dams have about 45 years of baby making time in their bodies. So if a dwarf has the possibility to be born every 9 years, that’s only 5 babies in a woman’s lifetime that she could possibly have. But would dwarves think babies are rare then, if this is the norm for them?

All this INTERESTING stuff put aside, I bet Dis was pretty surprised when she got prego with Ki so soon. I bet the look on her face was GREAT and there was some slapping of her husband at first, but I bet they were super happy to share the news and to welcome another leetle babe. AND THISISSSSSSSSWDJAKFLJSDfh;aesf This is why Ki and Fi are so close! It is special for their age difference to be so small.

Are you suggesting that Dwarves are... Marsupials?

They're very similar to marsupials, especially in how Pebbles would be carried around like or koalas or opossums. Though without a pouch they wouldn’t technically be marsupial (though neither are sloths and they still carry their babies around similarly).

Though...maybe the parents carry the babies around in their beards? Maybe in that case they’re marsupial XD

Ok but think about it:

Instead of dwarf babies being really big and heavy, they’re really really really tiny.

The body structure between siring and bearing dwarves doesn’t differ much, so giving birth to a child proportional to the parent in the way, say, a human baby is, would not be safe (therefore impractical for the Dwarven population on the whole). What use is it to a species if bearers have such a high risk of dying in childbirth?

Aule was practical when crafting his Children, and wanted to make them hardy and capable. Being encumbered by growing a Pebble (dwarf baby) would just risk too much of a bearer’s health and productivity. Since this was before Men or Elves had been created by Eru, Aule based Dwarven child-creation on the habits of animals. He was like "ok, it’s impractical if creatures can’t form babies without harming themselves; what if the Pebbles were born very very small, like animal babies. This way the parents can care for it but still work, and the Pebble would use up less energy of movement in order to develop further."

Dwarves may have difficulty getting pregnant (especially outside of the safety of mountains), but they require less recovery time after giving birth; in less-than ideal situations in which dwarves have to move a lot or feel unsafe, quick recovery of health and strength is important to survival.

So basically Dwarves are able to have children less often but the risk to bearers is far lower. The very small Pebbles sleep a lot more than human or hobbit babies would, and are fairly easy for the parents to mind while doing their own crafting. Parents usually carry their Pebbles around strapped to their backs or chests, like Koalas or possums.

Ok Dwarves treat their babies with care and delicacy, nuzzling against the baby’s forehead as a sign of affection when the pebble is an infant, but as soon as a baby’s neck is strong enough to support the head, it bashes into the nearest person. It’s actually a proud moment for a Dwarf if their baby manages to break their nose with a wild headbutt
