If you haven’t been to Ellora Caves, go now! Over tourism is killing the place. Both Ajanta and Ellora have captivated me since childhood. The mysteriously cut Kailasa temple and the Buddhist caves that follow are both architecturally and aesthetically superior to most cave temples in India. I had a wonderful time hiking up there a few years back. My guide sang out an ancient tune when we were in this cave to demonstrate the sharp acoustics that deck this hall. It gave me goosebumps! Eternal Ellora One of the two columns or Dhwajasthambhas at Kailasa temple, Ellora. It is about 16 metres tall embellished with a decorative bands containing Kirti-mukha or lion-like faces. The Kailash temple at Ellora is a distinct monument in itself like no other and is an architectural marvel executed by digging top down from a basaltic slope. Over 200,000 tons of rock was scooped out of the cliff before the temple could take shape and emerge in the present pattern to which the sculptures were carved to embellish the monument. Inspired by Mt.Kailasha in the Himalayas, the abode of Lord Shiva, the temple scooped out of a single massive rock, was initiated during the reign of Krishna I (mid-8th century CE) of the Rashtrakuta dynasty. This temple complex is among the 34 cave monasteries and temples that constitute the Ellora group of monuments which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located near Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. The Kailasha temple measures 164 feet (50 metres) long, 108 feet (33 metres) wide, and 100 feet (30 metres) high. Ellora Caves are one of the most magnificent rock temple complexes in the world, located in the Sahyadri hills near Aurangabad, Ellora, northern Maharashtra. The Ellora Caves are an impressive complex of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain cave temples, built between the 6th and 10th centuries AD. Ellora was built during Hindu dynasties such as the Rashtrakuta dynasty, which constructed part of the Hindu and Buddhist caves and the Yadava dynasty which constructed the Jain caves. The Ellora Caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
