emulated the South Park N64 game :)

the gameplay was a simple first person shooter so nothing to interesting but did keep me entertained for the time i played. only a few issues with the emulation including the sound being crackly, low frames per second and for some reason the theme song changed key at certain points lol.

Emulating Another Author’s Voice

Quick thing to understand before we get to the tips: unless you are writing fanfic* or are doing a creative writing exercise, you should never try to write your story in another author’s voice. Every writer has their own voice that they can grow and develop, but when you try to write in someone else’s it’s near impossible to keep that up through the entire story and what starts to happen is that your voice will show through the cracks, and that shifting voice tends to be pretty obvious. All of this being said, sometimes it can be a neat exercise to try to write scenes in other narrative voices, or just understand what makes a voice come across the way it does. 

* With fanfic sometimes the goal is to make it read like the original work did, and in that case trying to replicate the author’s voice can be a very good stylistic choice. 

Okay. With all of that out of the way, here are some things to focus on. (You really only need a few pages of whatever the source material is.)

PARTS OF SPEECH

VERBS & ADVERBS

Are the verbs softer or are they more detailed?

Are verbs the main focus of a sentence or are they acting more like glue?

Are the verbs frequently related to a specific subject (ex: combat, sciences, etc)? If so, which subject?

Do verbs usually stand on their own or are they accompanied by adverbs or further description?

NOUNS

Are the nouns specific or more generalized? (Ex: Shoes vs Air Force 1′s)

If some nouns are specific and others aren’t what topic do specific nouns tend to fall under? (fashion, scholarly, combat, magic, food, etc)

Are nouns the main focus of sentences or are they there purely because sentences needs them to be?

NAMES/PRONOUNS

If characters are named, are they usually referred to by nicknames, first name, last name, or full name?

Are characters referred to with epithets (ex: “the shorter one” “the blonde”)? If so, have the character’s names already been introduced?

Referencing characters, is the author heavier on using names/epithets, or are they more likely to refer to them with pronouns? Is it fairly even?

ADJECTIVES

Is the piece heavy with adjectives or are they used sparingly?

How many adjectives often accompany any given noun in a single phrase (ex: “the tall black chair” vs “the chair”)?

Are adjectives usually related to a specific topic? If so, which topic?

Are adjectives usually simple or are they more flowery? (ex: pretty vs exquisite vs splendiferous - apparently that’s a real word)

ORGANIZATION

PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE/BREAKS

Do paragraphs have a tendancy to run long, are they mixed, or do they tend to be shorter (and possibly choppier)?

Are paragraph breaks structured conventially, or is there a more creative element to them (such as breaking in the middle of a sentence for emphasis)?

Similarly, is the writing style conventional, or are there visual artistic elements such as words crossed or blacked out, or words in different fonts?

How does the author pull attention to certain words? Italics? Punctuation? Placement in paragraphs?

Does the author focus on the funny parts of what’s happening? The serious stuff? What parts of the situation get the most attention? 

SENTENCE STRUCTURE

Do sentences veer toward longer structures with multiple clauses, or are they choppier - prose stripped down to its bare essentials?

Does the author use a lot of a specific type of punctuation (em-dashes, commas, semicolons, colons, parentheses, etc)?

Are there parts of speech that are used more often in various parts of sentences (do sentences frequently start with verbs? end with nouns? etc)

Are there any sentence constructions the author seems to favor (order of parts of speech, punctuation, which clauses are dependant or not)?

LITERARY DEVICES

Is the text heavier with similies, metaphors, an even mix, or neither?

Are there allusions (references, sort of) to other ideas or pieces of media (ex: power structures similar to Robin Hood, or a character described as being like Goldilocks)?

Are there frequent uses of alliteration (several words in a row with similar sounds, especially as the first letter)?

Is there repetition, whether with phrases, words, or ideas?

Hopefully this is a good starting place to disect the voice of your favorite authors to see what works, or to try to emulate their style, or a way to figure out why that other book’s voice just ticked you off eeevvver so slightly (*chucks my 10th grade lit book at the wall*)

Fine? But keep it to yourself? Don’t act like you’re doing us all some great moral service by daring to stream on an illegal website instead of just paying for a Crunchyroll subscription or whatever. Because what happens? A lot of you morons start going on YouTube videos and write like “lol I’d never pay e-bay prices for SNES games,  I go to emuparadise” and then fucking word gets around, and suddenly Nintendo knows about emuparadise and it gets shut down with a cease and desist. In the process, a lot of fucking lost games get taken down from the internet just because YOU wanted to advertise how smart you are for playing Super Mario World on your PC instead of your Wii U. You’re not fucking Robin Hood you just don’t want to pay for shit.
