I feel like this might get me yelled at for saying this, but I think it often gets forgotten that identifiers like gay, straight, trans, bi, enbie etc are expressions of internal reality. Not nessesarily external fact.

That isn't to say gender and sexuality aren't "real" or a choice. Tons of things we recognize as real are exclusively part of your internal reality--- like your own consciousness.

But like, say a gay person sleeps with the opposite gender for years, and only realizes they're gay when they have their first gay relationship. Like, we understand the reason why a person would call themselves "gay" instead of "bisexual" in that instance is as an expression of realization that they were never attracted to the opposite sex to begin with even if their external reality might suggest they're bisexual.

I lived presenting as a woman for longer than I have as a man, and I wouldn't get mad if someone I slept with in the past still maintained they're not sexually attracted to men.

Because when your lizard brain is attracted to a specific gender, visually what it's registering is secondary sex characteristics. Secondary sex characteristics is basically everything you get from going through puberty. Boobs, facial hair, certain physical structures in the face, etc. It's why you know when cishet men insist they don't find trans women who have gone through hrt attractive are full of shit, regardless if she's had bottom surgery or not.

This is where it gets tricky when it comes to enbies, right? They can have all kinds of secondary sex characteristics. And, like, it's possible to acknowledge and respect their expression of non-bindaryness while at the same time acknowledging you find their specific set of secondary sex characteristics attractive.

I typically identify as someone who's attracted to women, but really what that means for my lizard brain is that I'm attracted to people with secondary female sex characteristics. That could actually means anything from women to enbies to other trans guys who have no transitioned yet, and that's fine. That fact means me and an untransitioned trans dude would probably not be a good match, and it would be up to the enbie themselves if they're okay with the idea that it's their secondary female sex characteristics that I find sexually attractive. I typically stick to women for this reason, but, you know.

So for all the drama going around with afab enbies and their cishet boyfriends, him not being attracted to amab enbies who haven't gone on hrt doesn't nessesarily mean he doesn't respect you as one . . . But it really, REALLY doesn't make him not just a straight guy either.

“Kid”

calls the stranger to the footsteps across the neatly trimmed lawn.

“Child”

says the exasperated teacher to the tapping pencil and shakey chair in the third row.

“Offspring”

says the cold researcher to the product.

There is no term of naked tenderness

of relationship and responsibility for affection

for parents to call me by,

despite their love.

Perhaps there is an orphaning inherent to this

this nameless state of separation from all.
