The clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' (Christmas rose, hellebore) put on an early display of flowers from February in ​Union Terrace Gardens, an Aberdeen park. The simple bowl-shaped white flowers turn apple green as they age. The plants contrasted well with the foliage of Epimedium cvs. and the larger Helleborus argutifolius (holly-leaved hellebore, Corsican hellebore).
