Avalon Archaeology is an open air museum near Glastonbury in Somerset, run by the SW Heritage Trust charity.
Over a period of 15 years a dedicated volunteer group have built a series of buildings of different periods. These include the winter dining-room of a Roman villa (with hypocaust, frescoes and mosaic floor), a 9th century AD Saxon longhall and an Iron Age roundhouse, which is being built at the moment.
There is also a waterline replica of the Skudelev 3 Viking trading ship from Roskilde.

Upcoming online event! . Next weekend it's the European Archaeology Days, and to celebrate both them and the release of our twentieth #FinallyFriday podcast episode, I'll be going live with my fellow host Phoebe Baker on Sunday afternoon (4pm CEST) to talk about all things archaeology. We'll be discussing the topics of all the episodes so far, as well as chatting about our own thoughts and experiences as archaeologists. If you have any burning questions left unanswered after having listened to the podcast episodes, or just fancy listening in, you can join our live chat on Instagram and Facebook. . For those who can't make it that day, the recording will also be released as a podcast episode. But hopefully we'll see you there! . #EuropeanArchaeologyDays #EXARC #experimentalarchaeology #archaeology #archaeologist #archaeologylife #podcast #LiveEvent #scicomm #ScienceCommunication https://www.instagram.com/p/CetKAgrLJZK/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Only a few more hours until this month's #FinallyFriday live Q&A session! Here's a little sneak peek to pique your interest: . Ready player 1? Archaeological interpretation is often focused on the physical objects from our past, either in excavation, replication through experimental archaeology, or exhibition in museums. But what other ways are available to interact with the past? In this month's episode of Finally Friday, we speak with two experts focusing on the exciting new ways that videogames can be used in archaeology. . Join us this evening (Friday July 2nd) at 18:30 Amsterdam Time on the EXARC Discord server to hear all about the different possibilities that video games can provide for archaeological interpretation, the current state of "archaeo-gaming", and exciting plans for the future. It may sound like an easy topic, but you'll soon learn that it's not all just fun and games! . Details on how to join can be found through the link in my bio. Hope you see you there! . #archaeogaming #exarc #podcast #newepisode #podcastepisode #podcaster #videogames #archaeology #experimentalarchaeology #archaeologist #publicoutreach #scicomm https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ09WUirObm/?utm_medium=tumblr
Well it’s finally the first Friday of September and you know what that means - it’s time for another episode of #FinallyFriday ! . Today’s episode is called “Open to Interpretation”, and discusses how we think about and perceive the past. Our guest speakers are Angela Pffeninger and Peter Inker, who will talk about theatrical performance and virtual reality in museums and heritage sites. As always, join us at 5pm at the @exarc.1 discord server to ask all those burning questions, or just to hear two great speakers chat and make you think... link in the bio! . Also it’s totally not procrastination to try and replicate “The Thinker” for a feature post right? ... Right?... . #podcast #experimentalarchaeology #exarc #friday #tgif #podcastlife #archaeology #museums #newepisode #acting #theatre #virtualreality #digitalart #thethinker https://www.instagram.com/p/CEtTzAYnUQm/?igshid=md6blynh046v
Never mind letting the cat out of the bag - someone let the bullocks out of the stable! . Today I attended a workshop run by @exarc.1 for their volunteers, and hosted at @archeonmuseumpark . We had the whole park to ourselves because of the limited opening times, so for once coronavirus regulations worked in our favour! It was great to be able to see all the aspects of the park in more detail, for example learning more about the two bullocks Isaac and James, and seeing the conservation work taking place on some amazing Roman ship remains. . The main aim of today was to provide EXARC volunteers with some presentations and interactive workshops. The first of these focused on sustainability in cultural heritage, with Caitlin Southwick describing how her company @ki_culture uses the UN sustainable development goals to help archaeologists and museums become more sustainable. The second session was a discussion about how EXARC is in terms of its current strengths and weaknesses, and how it can develop and improve. The third one was by me, talking about indigenous collaboration and social media outreach. . It was great to have such an interesting and productive discussion in a group again. Although online communication is definitely improving, there is still something about being physically present (with 1.5 metres in between of course) in order to discuss issues and just have general chats. . Now I'm exhausted 😅 who knew a day of social interaction would end up being so tiring! But I have an exciting plan for July which I'm really looking forward to sharing with you tomorrow. . #archeon #volunteer #exarc #experimentalarchaeology #openairmuseum #archaeology #archaeologist #prehistory #heritage #sustainability https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEdJoLH12F/?igshid=5jxjm2r7wsdr
. Yay it's #TechnologyThursday ! . Today is day 1 of the first online conference from @exarc.1 focusing on documentation strategies in archaeological open air museums. The conference was supposed to be held in Berlin, but what with the current pandemic, the organisers decided not to cancel it completely, but to try it online instead! . Each presentation is uploaded as a video to the EXARC YouTube channel, and people can then ask questions to the speakers or make comments in an online "discord" platform. This will also be turned into a virtual pub at the end of the day to allow for networking! . Exarc aren't the only organisation embracing the online world in this time of limited social interaction and travel restrictions. I haven't had time to check them out yet, but there are so many museums around the world who now offer virtual tours, as well as publishing companies that are providing free access to their material as a kind of online library. Even Keukenhof has an online tour! 🌷 . Although it is easy to focus on the negative at this crazy time, it is also important to look at the positives. After years of wondering whether academia should start becoming more environmentally friendly, for example by having more online conferences, we have more been forced to see if it could actually work. And indeed it does seem to. But it took a forced travel ban for it to be universally accepted as a possibility. . And that's just one benefit of all this! Has anyone else got another example? Let's focus on the positive here! 😊 . #exarc #conferences #online #onlineconferences #pandemic #workfromhome #homeoffice #positivevibes #positiveenergy #phd #phdlife #academicsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B-Mmcrxnp4M/?igshid=fwx6l4zcn7v9
