Pulpit Commentary by D.S. Jones [1836-1917] | | Isaiah 4:1
1.] Seven women shall take hold of one man. This verse has been well called a "companion picture to Isaiah 3:6-7.
As there, in the evil time of GOD's judgment, the despairing men are represented as" taking hold" of a respectable man to make him their judge,
so now the despairing women "take hold" of such a man & request HIM to allow them all to be regarded as HIS wives.
There has been such a destruction - men have become so scarce - that no other way can women escape the shame & reproach of being unwedded & childless.
2.] Our own bread will we eat. They do not ask HIM to support them; they are able & willing to support themselves.
3.] To take away; rather, take thou away - the imperative mood, not the infinitive.
4.] Our reproach. Children were regarded as such a blessing in the ancient times that to be childless was a misfortune & a subject of reproach.
Hagar "despised" the barren Sarai [Genesis 16:4].
Her "adversary provoked Hannah sore, because the LORD had shut up her womb" [1 Samuel 1:6].
Compare the lament of Antigone, who views it as a disgrace that she descends to the tomb unwed [Soph. 'Antig.' 11, 813-816].
Among the Jews childlessness was a special reproach, because it took away all possibility of the woman being in the line of the Messiah's descent [comp. Isaiah 54:1-4].
Charles John Ellicott, Theologian [1819–1905] | | Isaiah 4:1
[1] And in that day seven women—The CH division wrongly separates this verse from the foregoing.
It comes as the climax of the chastisement of the daughters of Zion, as the companion picture to [Isaiah 3:6].
Isaiah 3:6 | A man will seize his brother within his father’s house: “You have a cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this heap of rubble.”
As men sought eagerly, yet in vain, a protector, so women should seek for a husband.
Those who had been wooed & courted, & had been proudly fastidious, should supplicate in eager rivalry [the 7 women to 1 man implies a land depopulated by war, & so making polygamy natural] for the protection of marriage, & that not on the usual conditions of having food & clothing found for them [Exodus 21:10], but as working for their own livelihood.
3.] To take away our reproach—Better, as an imperative, take thou away. The reproach is that of being childless.
From the Jewish standpoint that was not only the great sorrow, but the great shame, of womanhood, implying, as men thought, a sin of which it was the chastisement [Genesis 30:23; 1 Samuel 1:6; Luke 1:25].
Genesis 30:23 | & she conceived & gave birth to a son. “GOD has taken away my shame,” she said.
1 Samuel 1:6 | Because the LORD had closed Hannah’s womb, her rival would provoke her & taunt her viciously.
Luke 1:25 | “The LORD has done this for me. In these days HE has shown me favor & taken away my disgrace among the people.”
John 3:8 | The wind blows where it wishes. You hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the SPIRIT.”
Exegete “wind” in the BIBLE, 74 occurrences, where pneuma occurs 383x
Pneuma is used 350x in the NT, & 27x in this Gospel for "the SPIRIT;" & if the usage is reversed here, this is the solitary occasion.
wind, πνεῦμα (pneuma) Strong's Greek 4151: Wind, breath, spirit.
Genesis 8:1 | But GOD remembered Noah & all the animals & livestock that were with him in the ark. And HE sent a wind over the earth, & the waters began to subside.
Pulpit Commentary by Donald Spence Jones [1836-1917]
Augustine, though acquainted with the other rendering, approves of this; so Origen, Bengel.
The great majority of commentators & versions have held that the former of the two translations is correct;
1.1] That the first time the word Πνεῦμα is used, it refers to the wind, "the unseen similitude of GOD the SPIRIT -
HIS most meet & mightiest sign;"
& that, since the same word is used for the two things, SPIRIT & wind, the LORD, after the parabolic manner which HE adopted [in the synoptic Gospels],
took advantage of some gusts of roaring wind then audible, to call attention to the mystery & incomprehensibility of its origin or end,
& to see a parallel between the unknown ways of the wind & the unknown points of application to the human spirit of the mighty energy of the living GOD.
Ecclesiastes 11:5 | As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of GOD, the Maker of all things.
1.2] The passage, Ecclesiastes 11:5, may have been in his mind [though there "SPIRIT" is as likely to be the reference as is the motion of the "wind," &
our ignorance of the way of the SPIRIT is akin to our ignorance of the formation of bones in the womb of her who is with child
1.3] And the adoption of the unusual word πνεῖ [John 6:18; Revelation 7:1; Matthew 7:25; Acts 27:40]
is in support of the comparison between "wind" & the "SPIRIT;" while the φωνή, the "voice" or sound of the wind in trees or against any barriers, & the other effects
that the rapid motion of the air produces, gives a lively illustration of the method in which the SPIRIT of GOD works in human minds,
revealing, not itself, but its effects.
1.4] It is further urged that the following clause,
So is every one that hath been born of the SPIRIT
meaning, So doth it happen to every one who is born of the SPIRIT - suggests the analogy between πνεῦμα in its material sense, & πνεῦμα in its customary & deeper sense.
Now, on the other hand, it appears to me that this latter clause is compatible with the older translation & application.
There is a comparison, but it may be between the mysterious working, breathing of the Divine SPIRIT,
whose "voice" or "word" may be heard, whose effects are present to our senses & consciousness,
but the beginnings & endings of which are always lost in GOD,
& the special operations of Divine grace in the birth of the SPIRIT.
1.5] There are numberless operations of the SPIRIT referred to in the OT, from the first brooding of the SPIRIT on the formless abyss, to all the special & mighty effects wrought in creation, all the heightening & quickening of human faculty,
all the conference of special strength upon men - their intellectual energies & Divine inspirations.
1.6] Over & above all these, there is all the supernatural change wrought in souls by the HOLY SPIRIT.
CHRIST calls this a "birth of the SPIRIT," & declares that, according to all the mysterious comings & departings of the SPIRIT, leaving only manifold effects, so is the
special Divine work which morally & spiritually recreates humanity.
1.7] The WORD θέλει, is, moreover, more appropriate to a living Being than to the wind.
There is another way which suggests itself by which the WORD Πνεῦμα may mean the same in both clauses:
The breath of GOD blows where it listeth, etc.,
so is every one born of the breath of GOD.
If this be possible, the form of the expression supplies a cooperating similitude drawn from the unknown origin & mighty effects of the unseen breath of heaven;
& on this translation the comparison is drawn between all the ways of the SPIRIT & the special work of the SPIRIT in regeneration.
An inference is deducible from either interpretation of this verse, incompatible with the theory that "birth from water" is equivalent to "regeneration in baptism."
If the rite of baptism provided the moment & occasion of the spiritual result, we should know whence it came & whither it went.
We might not know "how," but we should know "when" & "whence" the spiritual change took place.
But this knowledge is distinctly negated by CHRIST, who herein declares the moment of the spiritual birth to be lost or hidden in GOD.
Physical birth is a deep mystery, both whence the "spirit" comes & whither it goes;
the signs of the presence of life are abundant, but there is an infinite difference between the stillborn or dead child & the living one.
Similarly, the commencement of the SPIRIT's creation within our nature is lost in mystery.
We discern its presence by its effects, by consciousness of a new life & sense of a new world all around the newly born,
but the SPIRIT-birth, like all the other operations of the SPIRIT, is hidden in GOD.
Charles John Ellicott, Christian Theologian [1819–1905]
1.8] The baptism of the SPIRIT is needed for all.
Now, indeed, coming as a fire burning in men's hearts, consuming the chaff of sin, while HE purifies & stores up all that is true & good;
now coming as in a moment, & arresting a man in a course of evil, revealing the iniquity of sin, & giving the power to reform;
now coming as the gradual dawning of day upon the youthful soul who has never been wholly without it;
here in a sermon or a prayer, there in the lessons of childhood;
now by the example of a noble life or the lessons of history;
again in the study of SCRIPTURE or the truths written on the page of nature —the SPIRIT breaths where it wills.
We may not limit HIS action, but by HIS action must every one be born again.
1.9] Compare the instances of what men call gradual conversion & sudden conversion, placed side by side in the same chapter, in Acts 16:14; Acts 16:29 et cetera.
Acts 16:14 | Among those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of GOD. The LORD opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.
Acts 16:29 | Calling for lights, the jailer rushed in & fell trembling before Paul & Silas.

Have you ever heard a preacher say the same SCRIPTURE twice?
How many times have you heard the SCRIPTURE,
"GOD so loved the world HE gave HIS only begotten son that whosoever would believe in HIM would not perish but have everlasting life?"
The answer is you've never heard the same SCRIPTURE twice.
Your ears may have heard the sound of it before, your mind may have pondered the thought of it.
But you can never hear the same SCRIPTURE twice,
even if it's the same verse-for GOD only speaks now &
HIS WORD is always new.
It doesn't matter if you've heard the same verse every minute of every hour of every day of your life.
GOD will speak a new word to you through that same SCRIPTURE &
it will change your life if you receive it anew.
For GOD only speaks now, & right now HE has a WORD to speak to you that you've never heard before.
So, open up the BIBLE today & your heart...that you may receive the new, fresh, & life-changing WORD HE has to give you.
If you receive it - it will be new & will change your life.
From Message #1195 - Sharp
Try this for today.
Go get your Bible, open it up
find a verse you've heard before, &
now receive it as if you have never heard it before - as if for the first time.
Scripture: Hebrews 4:12
Hebrews 4:12 | For the WORD of GOD is living & active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul & spirit, joints & marrow. It judges the thoughts & intentions of the heart.
Steven Furtick repeats key statements by the 3rd/4th repetition, something new clicks.
Your message is truth, correlates w/
Isaiah 55:11 | so MY WORD that proceeds from MY mouth will not return to ME empty, but it will accomplish what I please, & it will prosper where I send it.
2 Corinthians 9:10 | Now HE who supplies seed to the sower & bread for food will supply & multiply your store of seed & will increase the harvest of your righteousness.
Deuteronomy 32:2 | Let my teaching fall like rain & my speech settle like dew, like gentle rain on new grass, like showers on tender plants.

Symbols: More Than Words P1,2,3,4,5 | Robert Morris [Sept.10/18]
You might not know everything; there might be some things in the BIBLE that you’ve never seen. [15:04]
Things I’ve never seen, & that’s why I read it everyday.
Everyday.
Because this BOOK was written by a higher BEING. A Spiritual BEING, & IT has all sorts of Spiritual symbols in IT.
#1 BIBLE is full of Spiritual Symbols #2 Sheep have an Enemy
2] Sheep have an Enemy
The reason I’m doing this is because we know sheep represents something, Psalm 100:3
Psalm 100:3 | Know that the LORD is GOD. It is HE who made us, & we are HIS; we are HIS people, & the sheep of HIS pasture.
We’re the sheep of HIS pasture, so we’re called sheep.
Everyone know that? Right OK.
Now we’re going to read another verse, see you already believe in symbols, you believe in the BIBLE.
IT talks about the sheep of HIS pasture, it’s about the people of GOD. [15:47]
Ezekiel 34:1-3 | Then the WORD of the LORD came to me, saying, “SON of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel.
Alright Stop for a moment: You think he’s talking about literal shepherds?
Of course not, he’s not talking about a guy on the side of a hill with a dress & stick, that’s not what he’s talking about. What’s he talking about? He’s talking about pastors, spiritual leaders. [16:12] But it says shepherds, why? Because we’re sheep.
Prophesy & tell them that this is what the LORD GOD says: ‘Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who only feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed their flock? You eat the fat, wear the wool, & butcher the fattened sheep, but you do not feed the flock.
K, “woe to the shepherds”
So shepherds are spiritual leaders, & flocks are the ppl of GOD.
K, so I’m going to show you another verse where flocks/sheep mean people & shepherd means pastors.
But there’s another symbol & you need to understand that it means something too in the spiritual language [16:52].
Alright? In the spiritual world that’s going on around us.
Ezekiel 34:5 | They were scattered for lack of a shepherd, & when they were scattered they became food for all the wild beasts.
So they, “that’s sheep” that’s HIS people were scattered because no shepherd was feeding them the WORD of GOD; & they became food for all the beasts of the field—when they were scattered [17:12]
Now see here’s what bothers me: [17:15]
We say now sheep = people, we also say shepherds = pastors, but the beasts of the fields = lions & tigers!!? [17:26]
No, it means demonic spirits.
And I’ll prove it to ya, I’m a show you some more SCRIPTURES on the beasts of the field. But here’s what’s amazin’
Just get your BIBLE program & look at “beasts of the field” & “birds of the air”
Just look all through the BIBLE, & watch how many times that it represents the devil.
And I’ll show you JESUS HIMSELF, I just mentioned birds here, said it HIMSELF, K? [17:55]
Let me show you another symbol that you already know:
Genesis 3:1, it starts with three words “now the serpent” Who’s the serpent? Satan [you can answer] OK, how do you know? No (2x), I want know book/CH/verse. [18:21]
Genesis 3:1 | Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field that the LORD GOD had made. And he said to the woman, “Did GOD really say, ‘You must not eat of any tree in the garden?’”

Symbols: More Than Words P1,2,3,4,5 | Robert Morris [Sept.10/18]
Different types of exegesis:
Historical: what it means at the time;
Contextual: what's the context of it;
Allegorical: what is the story of allegory behind it (what is it symbolic of);
Revelatory: some theologians don't agree with this, but it's what is GOD saying to me through this passage?
But even when you do that, it's all got to line up with what we call cohesive exegesis, that means it has to be in agreement with the entire BIBLE, & the nature, & character of GOD.
And I've already talked about that stuff, so the today the title of the message is symbols.
Because I want to show you some symbols in SCRIPTURE.
And the BIBLE is full of symbolic SCRIPTURE.
When I first saw this, when I was in my early 20′s, I got saved at 19—this is what caused me to just devour the BIBLE.
To read it & read it & read it.
Because I saw all these symbols [4:38]
Now let me say this too, about the book & about us.
Let me say this about us first:
We have a tendency to believe that we are humans having a Spiritual experience [4:53]. But the truth is we’re Spirits having a human experience.
K, let me say this about the BIBLE:
This is a Spiritual BOOK written by a Spiritual BEING to Spiritual beings.
Let me tell you what that means [5:32]:
That’s why GQ Magazine doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about. Cause this is a Spiritual BOOK written by a Spiritual BEING to Spiritual beings.
And btw the natural man, which means the person who’s not born again—here’s what the BIBLE says [5:43]:
can’t even understand this book
So I’m going to show you some Spiritual signs, so here’s
#1: The BIBLE is full of Spiritual Symbols [5:54]
Also you need to know this: I’m going to go through a lot of SCRIPTURE; & I don’t have time to exegete all of these passages doctrinally.
I’m just going to show you some symbols; & I hope that you listen to this message about 10x.
And then I hope you get so hungry for the BIBLE, that you read it. [6:22]
Matter of fact, one time after I spoke about symbols this guy said to me, “I’m a go read the BIBLE, to see if all that stuff you said is true.” I said great.
I would love for you to read the BIBLE, to see if everything I say is true. I’d love for you to do that.
So let me show you some Spiritual symbols, when we get to Luke 10 in a moment [6:41]
Psalm 105:40-41 | They asked, & HE brought quail & satisfied them with the bread of heaven. HE opened a rock, & water gushed out; it flowed like a river in the desert.
The BREAD of heaven, water, rock; I talked about bread & water in the Spring, in this series.
Now you say, “yeah but I don’t understand how you get this Spiritual symbols?”
K, let me make another statement here, the BIBLE interprets itself. You don’t interpret the BIBLE, the BIBLE interprets you.
When I say there’s a Spiritual symbol, I’ve got a book, chapter, & verse for it; so let me show it to you Spiritually symbols here now. I read that in Psalm 105, now let me show you in the NT that tells me what the symbols are [7:30].
1 Corinthians 10:1-2 | I do not want you to be unaware, fellow believers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud, & that they all passed through the sea. They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud & in the sea.
Verse 2 have the 3 symbols, & these are the baptisms here.
“Baptized into Moses” that was their deliverer, which for us we get baptized into JESUS when we get saved.
“in the cloud” that would represent SPIRIT.
“in the sea” that would represent water.
So there are the 3 symbols for baptisms right there [7:59].
Watch v.3-4,
1 Corinthians 10:3-4 | They all ate the same spiritual food & drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, & that rock was CHRIST.
Okay, so where do I get Spiritual symbols from? Right there.
Because it said they ate Spiritual food, & we read about bread—there’s a whole message on BREAD, in this series.
If you want to mainly go back & listen to those messages, so you can kind of catch-up [refresh your memory].
Since we had a break in between this series [8:34].
Bread representing JESUS, water representing JESUS, it’s in the WORD of GOD. Now the rock representing JESUS.
But you see it says right there Spiritual bread/water/rock.
#1.1] Spiritual Symbol:
Let me show you another Spiritual symbol [8:51], about something having a Spiritual meaning in the BIBLE.
Revelation 11:8, this is about the two witnesses.
Revelation 11:8 | Their bodies will lie in the street of the great city—figuratively called Sodom & Egypt —where their LORD was also crucified.
figuratively [Spiritually]
But Spiritually he said there’s a name for it—in the Spirit realm.
Now look at Luke 10:17, I’m a show you some symbols & I’m going to show you how easy it is to let the BIBLE define symbols for you. OK? [9:29]
Luke 10:17-18 | The 72 returned with joy & said, “LORD, even the demons submit to us in YOUR name.” So HE said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
Luke 10:19-20 | See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes & scorpions, & over all the power of the enemy. Nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
