Exploding head syndrome (EHS) anon here. It is a parasomnia (sleep disorder) that is classified by hearing loud noises, like crashes, banging, and explosions. They are auditory hallucinations. The disorder is harmless as in it causes no physical harm and it is not a sign of a serious underlying condition like strokes. But because they cause no physical damage they aren’t treated seriously. EHS is often caused by stress, exhaustion or caffeine. When I tell a doctor that I struggle with it, I am given the basic “cut out caffeine, consistent sleep schedule, remove stress” advice which is unhelpful. I am exhausted to the point I don’t trust myself to drive, I zone out more, and just other sleep deprivation issues. Because I’m exhausted the EHS keeps happening which makes me more exhausted which then worsens the EHS. While doctors are right it’s harmless, I wish they didn’t take that to mean it can’t cause any problems
OHHHH. That's the ableism. I'm sorry for the confusion anon!
today on "I thought this was normal"
tryign to explain EHS is so funny actually
"ya i woke back up bc i heard a scream from my exploding head syndrome"
"your fucking WHAT NOW"
The only experience I ever had that I thought might have been paranormal in nature was hearing a strange voice shout "boo!" right in front of my face as I was about to fall asleep, startling me back awake. Needless to say, there was noone else in the room.
Well, turns out hearing a loud noise while falling asleep or waking up is a thing that affects about one in ten people and it bears the glorious name
Exploding Head Syndrome
...So, uh, yeah. Not a ghost, just some nerves misfiring.
Gonna share with y’all the freakiest thing that’s happened to me in a while.
So I have Exploding Head Syndrome, which is relatively harmless sleep disorder that causes auditory hallucinations, typically of very loud and sudden noises like thunder, gunshots, things falling, etc…. It happens when you’re going into and coming out of sleep, so it can be extra jarring when it happens.
With me, I typically get weird pulse-y banging noises. Once I got a really synth-y sounding “bwow” sound. And the thing about them is that the noises do not adhere to the acoustics of the room I’m sleeping in. I can tell it’s just the hallucinations because the sound doesn’t bounce off the walls like it should if it were actual sound waves. It sounds very “coming from inside your skull” which is a creepy way of putting it, but it’s true and others who experience it might get it.
Now occasionally, you can hear voices. This has happened to me only once, and it was roughly half a year ago.
I heard my mom- my several years dead mom- call for me from across “the house”. And I knew that shit was a hallucination because when I say “the house”, I mean that the sound mimicked the acoustics of my childhood home, and not the acoustics of where I’m currently living.
It hasn’t happened again. Yet.
But hey, if it’s a fluke and she’s just checking in with me from the afterlife, hi mom! Love you!
lowk my new anti depressants might've given me exploding head syndrome
shame because they're effective too
