I overall like the new designs for royal magic, and I might give more complex thoughts on things later but I wanted to highlight that King Roland II has different colour eyes now. With other characters like Sofia, they have slightly different shades of the same colour, but Roland has gone from having green eyes to having gold eyes.
I don't think this is a better or worse thing, I think it's aesthetically neutral, but I do find it weird in an intriguing way that he is the only character that we've seen who has a completely different eye colour. Is this a purely out of universe aesthetic choice or is there a lore reason behind it? (It is fine if this is just an out of universe aesthetic choice, it's been 10 years time to give him a new coat of paint, but if there is a lore reason I yearn to know).
Here are three examples of Roland’s green eye colour from Once Upon a Princess (The Pilot Episode), The Amulet of Avalor (Season 1 Episode), In Cedric We Trust (Season 4 Episode):
The animation changed slightly between the pilot and the main series so I think that accounts for the shade being different and then depending on the lighting the shade of green looks slightly different between the season 1 and season 4 screenshots but it's the same base colour for the entire series.
The only time he ever had different coloured eyes was in the flashback episode Through the Looking Back Glass where young Roland is depicted having grey brown eyes:
Which is strange because the other child versions of grownups we see in that flashback have the same eye colours so it seems to be an animation error?
(Hello Dovewing from Warrior Cats)
His sister, his mother, and his paternal grandfather all had green eyes, so Roland matched them. But his eyes being gold does make his eye colour align more with Amber and James, Amber has light brown eyes, and James has dark brown eyes, and I do think that is cute since they are his closest biological family members. Although if they wanted to redesign him to look even more like the twin’s biological father, why not just make his eyes brown to completely match them? If there's an in-universe explanation for him having a different eye colour, is it because of some sort of voluntary magic or was this change involuntary? Or has it been completely retconed that his eyes have always been gold now? Eye need to know.
