Reposted from @medicalpedia Incredible photos of an egg leaving the ovaries taken accidentally during an examination! This is an image of a human ovum (egg) emerging from an ovary. These are the clearest pictures taken of human ovulation, which was originally thought to be a quick process where the egg bursts out of the ovary. Instead, it took over 15 minutes for the ovary to fully release the egg, and it happened more like a secretion than a explosion. This was discovered accidentally during an examination for hysterectomy. Ovulation is the process in which a mature egg is released from the ovary. After it's released, the egg moves down the fallopian tube and stays there for 12 to 24 hours, where it can be fertilized. In an average 28-day menstrual cycle, ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next menstrual period. However, each person's cycle length may be different, and the time between ovulation and the start of the next menstrual period may vary. #ovary #ovum #humanegg #biology #fallopiantubes #fertility #fertilization #egg #ovaries #menstrual #reproduction https://www.instagram.com/p/CbJYKmIOJPa/?utm_medium=tumblr
