‘these characters are acting weird why won’t the show acknowledge it??’
friends I need us all to remember that everything on a tv show is on purpose. not to say there’s a grand unified Plan or things can’t get dropped because of actor availability or network notes or general life events but! tv is not real life! Every single thing you see on your screen is artifice! it’s a choice!
if a character is doing anything at all on screen it’s because writers wrote a script and actors read it and directors and producers spoke to those actors about how they wanted that script to be interpreted. and then directors and editors went through the takes and chose the ones they felt best fit the story they wanted to tell, and then they made cuts to ensure that only the most relevant moments made it to air! it isn’t life, it’s art.
because of this it is simply not possible to have a scene that means nothing and characters who are doing weird meaningless shit. tv people aren’t just candid cam filming you and your bros getting brunch together one Saturday, they are inventing a story together. it is possible that they decide to change where the story is going later and thus render a scene less connected to the overarching plot, and it is possible that a scene can be badly made or kinda silly. it is also possible that you/the audience misinterprets the original idea behind a scene. but you have to assume that some kind of positive artistic intention was there during the moments of creation.
so why are they behaving weirdly? because someone’s telling a story. wait and see.
