From @renegadeguild ‘s 2025 6th Renegade Bindery Exchange made for @bluejayblueskies of their delightful fic True Love’s Something!
This book was a ton of fun and had a number of new challenges for me!
The fic is a Shrek AU, so I went for a sort of fairytale vibe on the interior to match the storybook opening of the Shrek movies. Only, while I was redrawing the storybook page openings (so that I had them in a higher resolution) I tweaked some details to better match the story/characters ;)
The challenge I faced with these lovely storybook pages however, was that the paper weight that I use was a touch too light and the illustrations showed through slightly on the reverse page. Which wouldn’t have been as much of a problem if the gold gilding pen that I purchased wasn’t oil based and didn’t bleed through to the back side of the page…
Sadly I didn’t have any higher weight paper on hand so change of plan involved tweaking my typeset so that each illustrated page had a blank backside to it. Then I tipped the edges of the pages together. And then I tore the faux deckled edges into the book. All of which had to be completed only after the text block was sewn, because some of the signature middles landed on those blank middle pages. 😭
Suffice to say the construction order of this book was one big puzzle that had me doing this the entire time
However! I am so, so pleased with the results! This was my first time attempting faux deckling like this, as well as my first time doing interior gilding! Also my first time doing a proper laminated dust jacket! (Which also had gilding woo!)
Speaking of, the design of the dust jacket is one I especially love! There’s a gorgon character within the story and another character that often mentions their beloved strawberry patch back home so it was only befitting that I combine the two for the cover! (Slightly stylized of course, and yes I know you wouldn’t be able to see the snake tails if they’re relating to a gorgon but hush.)
My one regret with this book that I didn’t catch in time (before I had already sent the dustjacket for printing), is that the spine text is the wrong direction 😭 Every book I almost make this mistake but catch it in time, and this was the one time I failed that. 😔 Alas.
But can we talk about how well those endband colors match the endpapers and cover???? 👀
Materials:
Cover bookcloth is Cialux in 1521 Maroon with a small amount of Siser Metal Gold HTV on the front.
Dustjacket is made using Staples’ poster print service on 6.8 mil thick paper type then hand gilded with Sakura Pen-touch Calligrapher gold pen (very pretty results, somewhat finicky to work with) and laminated (with a large lamination roll as opposed to the individual sheets you usually find - so as to avoid seams).
Endpapers are Black Ink Florentine Print Decorative Paper - Portofino.
Bound using linen thread and archival pva glue, endbands sewn using single strand embroidery thread in a faux-double core style. Printed on Hammermill 20lb cream paper.
These are coming out quiet nicely. This is Under the Rabbit’s moon by @vesperlionheart I am almost done casing it. It does have a few flaws but it’s still readable. Also a look at the dust jacket cover I hope she likes it and I’ll be sending it down soon.
now that wes has their copy i am so happy to be able to share this bind!! when i started this bind back in like february, it was because i saw another binder on instagram (peachybinds) use halo laminate on her dust jackets and i immediately thought to myself i need to do that right now. my second thought was it obviously needed to be completely pink, duh! 🎀🌸💞
i really leaned into the tarot/witchy vibes (this is a theme with me if you can’t tell. i take a theme and i R U N) and ofc the pink. i ran into the small issue of wanting a very pink tim with specific themes from the story so i just wound up drawing him myself so pls do not zoom in, my skills do not lie in art 🫠 i gave him all my jewelry though so that was fun!
this fic is genuinely just such a fun, good read i had such a good time working on this :) the chapter titles are my favorite of probably any fic i’ve ever read and making individual little tarot card-esq headers was fun, but i was fighting for my LIFE drawing them, so i had some help from canva with the sun rays 😩 digital art hates me </3
also?? WHY is taking pictures of my binds the hardest part of binding….. guys i can’t get a good picture to save my life :’) i also only took one (1) photo of the authors copy so i have no proof of its existence 😔✋
if you haven’t read it yet, definitely give this fic a chance, it is so much fun and tim is such a little liar it’s great <3
The second book I made for @zinder-fox was It's Time For Another Good Idea, Bad Idea by Haurvatat
I was inspired by a couple cookbooks when creating the design.
This is a Solo Leveling fic that features a less common pairing. Anyone that likes the novel's Jin Woo more than the webtoon or animes potrayal will enjoy this fic.
I also did custom French double core endbands for this fic. Here is attempt #2
With over 20 years in fandom, I dedicate myself to binding the stories I like: with more passion than talent 😂. I also reblog the work of others as a way of celebrating fandom and these beautiful works of fan art that are bound fan fiction. For other ficbinders' work, I always use the same hashtag so that they can be found easily: "Fantastic ficbinders and where to find them"
So I knew I wanted to self-indulgently print copies of my fanfic, "The Town Theatre Presents: Orpheus and Eurydice," pretty much as soon as I finished it. I managed to put it off until this winter, when I wanted to have them ready to go in January. One thing happened after another and I have ended up stitching and binding these babies all by myself but with this pretty letterpress covers by local artist arquoise press who helped me out a lot and. Well. Just look at these!
Anyway, if you would like a copy I could use the help making back the money I spent on all these print costs and these beautiful covers. The first few orders come with a limited bonus bookmark, also made by arqoise press (thank you!). Also this is a living story and couldn't just go to print as it was. The print copy is a slightly different beast.
Thank you also to Harpy, who I know is on tumblr but I forget your username I'm sorry, for helping with the layout and all the bookbinding advice.
I am selling the book at cost, with no profit margin. If the shipping seems a little steep, it's because I've been burned by not charging enough before. I will refund any overcharges that I might make once it's in the mail. Thanks for your patience. I'm currently working on binding as many as I can at a time and the first batch should ship in May.
