Summary: Missing Enzo more than you'd like to admit, you spent your summer days wallowing in self-pity beneath the warm hazel glow of the season. But perhaps the universe was listening, because your wish finally came true, rewarding you with the sweetest day—and the fluffiest date—with your Slytherin boyfriend.
Summer carnivals had always been one of the most breathtaking parts of growing up in the Muggle world. The dazzling rides, the brightly lit swings, the laughter echoing through the evening air—it was impossible not to lose yourself in the crowd, screaming your lungs out on the tallest ride simply because you could.
Contrary to your sweet, gentle Hufflepuff nature, there was another side of you that craved excitement. A side that wanted to run freely, explore every corner, laugh until your stomach hurt, and scream with pure joy.
And then there were the sweets.
Merlin, you adored them.
The fruity gummies that burst with flavor the moment they melted on your tongue, fluffy cotton candy that disappeared like clouds, colorful lollipops—you loved every single one. It was almost concerning how much of a sweet tooth you had. Fortunately for you, convincing Enzo to buy you just one more bag of candy had never been particularly difficult.
Speaking of Enzo...
You'd been missing him more than usual this summer.
While you imagined the cheerful chaos of the carnival, he was back in Italy, enjoying his own holiday. It wasn't as though the two of you hadn't been writing to each other—your owl had been flying back and forth with plenty of letters all summer—but something still didn't sit right.
How were you supposed to enjoy all of this without your ridiculously sweet boyfriend... and that stupid, annoyingly handsome smirk of his?
The thought alone made you pout.
Well, that was another concern for another day.
Tonight, you were staying over at your Muggle Grand mother's house, both of you excitedly planning tomorrow's trip to the summer carnival.
Summers in the Muggle world felt so different.
Back at Hogwarts, melancholy and mystery clung to the ancient castle the way mist embraced the Forbidden Forest. It was enchanting, breathtaking, and endlessly magical.
But there was something Hogwarts could never quite replicate.
Life.
Your little hometown buzzed with it. Children raced through the streets with sticky fingers clutching melting popsicles, music drifted from open windows, neighbors chatted over garden fences, and every corner seemed to glow beneath the golden summer sun.
Hogwarts was your home—there wasn't a single doubt about that.
But your hometown was like a candle, small yet warm enough to brighten the people around it. Its light wasn't grand or everlasting, yet it carried a comfort that wrapped itself around your heart in a way the dreamy halls of Hogwarts never could.
You let out a quiet sigh.
Despite everything, one thing refused to change.
You missed your idiot.
If you were back at the castle, Susan wouldn't have let you hear the end of it. She would've teased you mercilessly for being so hopelessly in love, and somehow, you would've handled it with at least a little dignity.
Here, though?
You were shamelessly simping for your own boyfriend.
The worst part was that Enzo had absolutely no idea what he was missing. Summer carnivals in the Muggle world were nothing like wizarding festivals. The dazzling rides, sugary treats, the laughter echoing through the night—it was exhilarating.
If only he could experience it with you.
Unfortunately, your mind refused to cooperate. It tormented you with the same thoughts over and over again.
Of course, Enzo couldn't join you this summer...
At least, that's what you kept telling yourself.
You felt a little silly for missing him this much. Maybe he was simply enjoying his vacation in Italy. Yet the thought continued to gnaw at the back of your mind, leaving you oddly restless.
Deep down, you knew he was probably missing you just as much.
Lost inside your little bubble of overthinking, you didn't even notice Cookie barking at your feet until he demanded your attention.
" Oh baby."
You sighed softly, scooping your little companion into your arms. Gently scratching behind his ears, you watched him melt into your embrace with complete trust.
Such a sweet little thing.
Pressing a kiss to the top of his head, you held him like a baby, smiling to yourself.
Merlin...
Enzo would've adored Cookie.
The realization only made you miss him even more.
With a defeated sigh, you glanced out of your bedroom window.
The moon bathed the sleepy town in silver light while fairy lights already decorated the streets in anticipation of tomorrow's summer carnival.
You carefully set Cookie back on the floor, letting him wander wherever his tiny paws pleased.
Then, with one last look at the glowing town outside, you climbed back into bed...
...only to torture yourself with thoughts of Enzo all over again.
You reluctantly drifted off to sleep, your restless mind refusing to settle. Little did you know what the future had in store for you.
Morning arrived sooner than you'd hoped.
Sunlight streamed through your bedroom window, spilling across the floor like scattered pearls and bathing your room in a warm golden glow.
You let out a groan.
Usually, mornings were your favorite. You were always the first one awake, cheerful before anyone else had even opened their eyes.
Not today.
The heaviness from last night still lingered in your chest, making even the simple task of getting out of bed feel exhausting.
Somehow, you managed to drag yourself downstairs for breakfast.
Ever since your parents separated, your grandmother had been the one constant in your life. You still saw your mother every now and then, though only once every few months.
Your Nana knew you better than anyone.
The moment you walked into the kitchen, she noticed your unusually gloomy expression.
Trying not to worry her, you wrapped your arms around her in a quick hug.
"Morning, Nana."
She smiled warmly before gently cupping your cheek.
"Now, what's with that face, sweetheart?"
You laughed awkwardly, immediately trying to change the subject.
"Uhm... what did you make for breakfast today, Nana?"
She sighed, gently patting your head.
"Y/N, you know how much you mean to me, right?"
She took your hand in hers, and you nodded.
"If you don't want to talk about it, I'm not going to push you."
You sighed, hugging her once more before pulling away, feeling a little lighter than before.
The rest of your day was spent gardening, playing with Cookie, writing yet another letter to Enzo, and exploring the old attic of your townhouse.
Somehow, it managed to distract you from thoughts of your boyfriend for a while. It wasn't often that happened, but you welcomed the change.
After taking a long shower, you changed into something comfortable, allowing the warm water to wash away the heaviness that had settled inside your chest since yesterday. You felt lighter now. Not entirely, but enough to convince yourself that tomorrow would be better.
Perhaps tomorrow would finally feel like summer again.
Quietly humming to yourself, you descended the old wooden staircase, your fingers gliding absentmindedly along the polished railing that had existed long before you were born. The familiar creak beneath each step greeted you like an old friend.
"Nana?" you called, expecting the comforting aroma of dinner to welcome you downstairs.
Silence.
You frowned ever so slightly.
That was unusual.
Your grandmother was rarely this quiet. She was always humming an old tune while cooking, chatting to herself, or fussing over Cookie whenever he wandered too close to the kitchen.
Yet the house remained strangely still.
Even Cookie wasn't barking.
The silence lingered with an unsettling elegance, wrapping itself around every corner of the little townhouse until even the ticking grandfather clock sounded unnaturally loud.
You stepped into the hallway.
Darkness greeted you.
Not the comforting darkness of bedtime nor the peaceful embrace of evening, but an unfamiliar kind that swallowed every piece of furniture whole. The fairy lights hanging outside the windows painted faint amber patterns across the floorboards, though they barely reached the heart of the room.
A peculiar uneasiness curled inside your stomach.
"...Nana?"
Again...
Nothing.
Perhaps she'd stepped outside.
Or maybe she'd gone to the neighbour's house for a moment.
You exhaled, silently laughing at yourself.
Merlin...
You really had been overthinking far too much lately.
Shaking your head, you stretched your arm toward the light switch, your fingertips hovering only inches away.
Before they could reach it—
A firm hand clasped over your mouth.
Your breath caught violently in your throat.
For one impossible second, your mind refused to comprehend what had happened.
Then instinct seized control.
Your heartbeat erupted against your ribs like frantic wings trapped inside a cage.
You kicked backwards, twisted desperately within the stranger's hold, your hands clawing at the wrist restraining you.
Unable to scream, you did the only thing your panic allowed—
You bit down.
Hard.
The grip disappeared almost instantly.
"Bloody hell—"
A familiar voice hissed through gritted teeth, followed by a pained laugh.
"...YN."
Your entire body froze.
No...
Surely not.
"...Are you planning to murder your own boyfriend before saying hello?"
The lights flickered to life.
Warm golden light flooded the room all at once.
There stood your Nana beside the dining table, one hand pressed over her mouth in a hopeless attempt to suppress her laughter.
Beside you stood Lorenzo Berkshire.
Rubbing the back of his thoroughly abused hand with the most tragically offended expression you'd ever seen.
You stared.
He stared back.
You stood there in shock for a moment before bursting into laughter.
"Seriously, Enzo?"
He smiled, his eyes fixed on your face as if he'd forgotten the long journey from Italy the moment he saw you smile.
"Worth the bite," he mumbled, rubbing the back of his neck dramatically.
You couldn't help but laugh again.
Leaning forward, you pressed a quick kiss to his cheek.
Without missing a beat, he smiled and kissed you back, one hand gently finding your waist as the two of you laughed together.
Watching the two of you, your Nana simply
smiled, her heart warming at the sight.
Later that evening, the three of you sat down for dinner together.
Beneath the dining table, your fingers found Enzo's, intertwining with his as though you couldn't quite believe he was really there.
Gratitude filled your heart—for your Nana, who had invited him, and for your hopelessly sweet idiot of a boyfriend who had flown all the way from Italy just to see you.
The night faded away in shared laughter, playful teasing, and the kind of happiness that made every mile between you feel worth it.
Maybe tomorrow would be filled with carnival lights, cotton candy, and laughter.
But tonight...
Tonight, simply having Enzo beside you again was more than enough.
