we kinda skipped over the whole "I'm real when it's useful" line from Justice League, especially when considering that Victor Stone says “I didn’t think you were real” to Bruce post-Cyborg transformation. this man can see the whole world via technology, his mind is the internet in some ways, he has access to every image and video out there and he still wasn't entirely sure that Batman was real.

so the earliest silverflint fic I can find on ao3 dates back to february 14, 2015. that means there were NO fics of them until into season two lmaooooooo oh the journey those two took

recently started house of the dragon because i keep hearing about the tragic homoeroticism at the center of it all. i'm only a few episodes in and like yeah absolutely these poor girls are experiencing the most complicated first gay love & heartbreak of all times but i'm equally fascinated by the fact that this show is about patriarchal power as a cornerstone of a monarchic/hierarchic society, and how it irremediably fucks up our two protagonists and their relationship to themselves, to their families, to each other

and when i say patriarchal power it really is not even subtle: the origin story of this whole show is about daughters and fathers. it's about THE patriarch, the king, the father of the people/realm. and another guy whose title is THE HAND (you know, a father's hand, this instrument of control and punishment, this symbol of ownership and love). and how these two men treat their daughters, who love each other but will hurt each other, and love their dads but will be hurt by them.

(of course the mothers are absent. because however much comfort they may provide their daughters, ultimately they are just as powerless. "royal wombs" rhaenyra's mother calls the two of them. before dying a horrible gruesome death so the patriarch can have a son for a few hours)

and it's so interesting that you get young alicent and young rhaenyra both suffering under the yoke of their fathers' authority, control, love, but reacting in complete opposite ways: rhaenyra, raised a princess and afforded privileges through her unique station (she rides a dragon! the ultimate symbol of violent power! she gets to be late and irreverent, even with the king!) chafes against the constraints of her gender, is desperate to be seen by her father as a person - not his daughter, but his heir. in one of her first scenes she tells her mom that she doesn't want to do what a woman is supposed to do (risk her life in childbirth) and would rather be a man (risk her life at war). she's candid about it, and unrepentant, and keeps struggling to win for herself the freedom of men. but of course she never truly will.

meanwhile alicent applies herself wholly to fulfill her role of the perfect daughter - quiet, obedient, chaste, nice, available to the man her father chooses for her - so she can win the approval and affection of a father who treats her as his pawn, his property, an extension of his body without free will. alicent who goes from one father's authority to another, parent-father to husband-father (literally marrying the father of her best friend who's also the king? come one) and does as she's told with a smile even if it kills her inside and doesn't know yet that all her sacrifices won't ever be enough to get her the love and personhood she craves

one rebelling, one obeying, neither succeeding because there's no escape. yeah. yeah!

You don't have to go through the hard work of hearing them out and understanding their side and deciding where to meet in the middle or not meet in the middle or agree to disagree, we don't have that anymore, it's just bloop! you're gone. Yugioh thought of the day is how Kaiba, by his very nature of stalwartly ignoring the existence of the supernatural, is one of the only members of the cast that never mourns Atem.

He cannot participate in the grief of Atem's existence because he doesn't know he's a ghost. Ghosts aren't real. He is present at the Final Duel as a spectator, not a mourner, because this isn't a funeral to him. By the time we see him openly acknowledge Atem's nature in DSOD, he's still not mourning him, because now he's convinced he can bring him back. In a narrative about appreciating what you had and moving forward, Kaiba never does that. Do you hear me??? It's about ghost stories, and the main villain is someone who would rather tear a hole in reality than admit that he's living in one.
