It was the evening of Regina’s coronation as the Good Queen. She had retreated back to her room in the her castle, to stand at the balcony and think. So many times before, she had stood in this very place to think.
She wasn’t sure how long had passed, but as the sun started to set, she heard soft footsteps behind her. Regina turned to see Emma, smiling at her as she came to stand next to her.
"It's weird not seeing you in a pantsuit." Emma grinned. She leaned against the railing and gazed at the sunset.
Regina laughed. “I suppose things are different." She'd missed Emma, truthfully. There had been days, back in Storybrooke, when she thought the savior was the only one who understood her. It still rang true, to some extent, but Regina wasn't as alone as she was back then.
Emma chuckled. “Tell me about it. Henry’s been catching me up on everything.. god, Henry. I feel like he was just leaving for college."
“Now he has his own daughter.” Regina shook her head in disbelief, echoing Emma's sentiment. Her sweet little Henry had grown up, and as much as she was proud of him, it was a lot for her to process. How much her life had changed from her being the Evil Queen. Sometimes she still didn't believe it all.
“And now I do too.” Emma mumbled.
“You do." Regina smiled. "Hope is very cute. Congratulations, by the way.”
Emma sighed. “Thank you. If I'm honest, I feel like I’ve already failed her. I know it’s not supposed to be easy, but god, she just got here and I’m already messing up.” Emma buried her face in her hands for a moment before peeling them away. “Sorry, I don’t mean to complain on your big day..”
Regina hummed. She had a sneaking suspicion whatever it was, it wasn't really the blonde's fault. Emma had a skill for taking the world on her shoulders. “No worries. What’s going on?”
“..Killian and I are getting a divorce.” Emma whispered. "You're the first person I've told. I told him to play happy husband in front of my parents. I don’t need their whole true love speech. I feel like they’d encourage us to work it out, but we’ve tried.” She scoffed. “He says he can’t forget what I did. You know, turning him into the very thing he sought to destroy and all of that.” she waved her hand.
Regina stayed quiet for a moment. “Why the hell did he marry you, then?”
The savior snorted. "That’s what I said. He said he thought he could move past it. But I can't change it. It’s his choice. He still wants to be in Hope’s life, though, so at least there’s that.”
Regina shook her head. “Well, I’ve always thought you were too good for him.” She muttered.
Emma laughed. “You did say that. I don’t know, it’s not his fault if he can’t move past it.. But, I really don't want to dwell on it any longer than I already have. I could be doing better things than sulking in my anger. Like, catching up with you.” she elbowed her gently, a teasing smile on her face that didn't quite match the sadness in her eyes, but Regina didn't call her out on it.
Regina sighed thoughtfully. "If Henry's already filled you in, I'm not sure there's much for me to say."
"Oh, don't be like that. Maybe I just wanna hear you talk, Madam Mayor." Emma laughed.
Regina found herself laughing along with the ex sheriff. Emma had quite the talent at making Regina feel special. (Or maybe even unique, she mused.) Though, that might just be due to the fact that she'd always been a bit in love with Emma. Regina felt the old feelings rising up in her chest, as strong as they were the day they parted.
After she'd finished her sounds of amusement, Emma spoke again. “Are you ever gonna miss how things were, when we were just the Sheriff and the Mayor?”
Regina paused for a moment. Yes, was her immediate answer. She missed Emma charging into her office to bring her lunch and their family dinners and annoying Emma at the station with more paperwork that they both knew Emma wasn't going to do. She missed pretending she wasn't in love with the blonde. Though she'd never tell her that.
“I liked how you put it earlier, that I’d always be Madam Mayor to you.” she said carefully.
Emma smiled. “Yeah. Those were the times.”
“If you’re looking for a nostalgia trip, I can start calling you Miss Swan again.” She teased.
Emma rolled her eyes. “Maybe I am. I just miss when things were simpler. Now I’m a grandmother.” She shook her head.
"Sounds like you're having a midlife crisis."
“I’m having a divorce crisis.” She muttered bitterly.
Regina chuckled. “Well, I can’t help you there. I murdered my last husband.”
“Yeah. Honestly, I can’t say I blame you. He was twice your age and he had almost married your mom. Totally weird."
“Don’t tell your mother that.”
Emma laughed, ducking her head. Her curls bounced with her laughter, and Regina couldn't help the warmth on her face. With the sunset highlighting her natural glow, Emma looked relaxed in a way Regina had never seen her before. It was mesmerizing.
"Fuck," Emma tried to catch her breath between giggles, "I've missed you so much."
Regina's chest tightened. She wanted to run her hands through Emma's curls, twirl her long strands between her fingers and see if her hair was as soft as it looked. She wanted to kiss Emma till they were both breathless. She wanted Emma, and their separation had only made it harder to ignore.
"You think we ever would've happened?" Emma asked suddenly.
Regina felt her heart skip a beat. "What?" she blanked.
Emma laughed again. "Don't play dumb. You and I, when I first came to Storybrooke? I wasn't sure if you were gonna kill me or kiss me. Or both."
She really, really thought she'd been better at hiding it. And Emma's words implied a level of mutuality that Regina never thought was possible.
Emma pressed her lips together. "Sorry. I know that just broke the unspoken rule, but—"
"I didn't know." Regina interrupted her, forcing the words out. "I didn't know you felt that way." she corrected.
Everything she'd been so sure of when it came to Emma crumbled. The security of knowing that line would never be crossed, that Regina was safe to dwell on her feelings and not pine for a possibility that Emma would ever entertain her, the woman who cast the curse and ruined her life. It was designed in her mind as impossible, and now Emma was mentioning it like it was an universal truth. That Regina had done something to imply that they'd never happen, so it wasn't worth mentioning. Regina racked her brain for what would've given Emma that impression. Was it that Regina wanted Robin? Was it that Regina didn't fight for her when Neal and Killian were tripping over themselves in Neverland for the blonde's attention? If Regina thought there was ever a chance for them, she would've. She would've.
"Are you serious? I—Regina, I took the fucking darkness for you." Emma stared at her, waiting for Regina to say something. As if Regina should've differentiated her self sacrificing nature as an act of love.
"You would've done that for anyone." Regina shook her head. "You made Killian a Dark One, for fucks sake. How was I supposed to know?"
"In my darkness, I was convinced it was better to have someone than no one at all. He loved me. I love him, in my own way. I thought, if not him, I'd be alone. And being alone, in my Dark One mind, was worse than the consequences of what I did."
Regina realized she was crying. Today's been too much. This last year has been too much, quite frankly. And right now, Emma is beautiful and telling her she's leaving Killian and Regina would've had a chance this whole damn time, and she can't help but reach forward, to cup Emma's face in her hands.
"Why didn't you.." Regina can't bring herself to say the dozens of things on the tip of her tongue. Why didn't you ask? Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you try?
Emma shook her head. She reached her hands up, covering Regina's hands with her own. "What if we hadn't worked out? What if you hated me, and we hurt Henry, and we hurt each other? It was easier. I couldn't risk it. I was—I am so scared, of losing you."
"I hated you because I feared you were going to take everything away from me. I love you because you gave me what I never would've had otherwise; a second chance. You were my prophesized doom, but you were also my salvation. I could never hate you without also loving you."
"Still?"
"Until I stop breathing." Regina said sincerely.
"We have the worst fucking timing." Emma laughed sadly.
"Maybe." Regina mustered her strength. "Maybe this was the only way we could've happened. If you still.."
The blonde hesitated. "Yeah. Yeah, I do, I just.. I need time. I don't know where I fit in right now, as a princess and a mother and a divorcee.. But when I figure it out, you'll be the first to know."
She nodded. "That's all I can ask for."
Emma smiled at her, full of hope and a little nervousness, like the night they first met. "Goodnight, Regina." she whispered, pulling away. Regina swallowed the words on her tongue.
