Hey FFVII fandom, quick question from someone that’s never played an actual Final Fantasy game. Unless you really want to count like Dissidia, Duodecim, The Crystal Bearers, Echoes of Time(I think?), Theatrythm, and Curtain Call; I think that’s all of them. 

Anyways, how exactly does mako work? I have a very basic concept of it, I think... I guess more of the question I mean is do you have to take it continuously? Like is it something you can’t suddenly quit or do you have to take it for the rest of your life or what? I’m really sorry if this is a super stupid question, but this has been on my mind for-fucking-ever. I assume you can’t cold turkey it, but what about weaning yourself off?

Ooh actually I played a little bit of Crisis Core(Starts with Zack riding on the top of a train if I remember correctly?) Almost forgot about that. Think I only played it for like 10 minutes

FFVII/Crisis Core Ship Names

So, it occurred to me today that there are a LOT of characters, and various ships, in this fandom. But also that the naming conventions aren’t universal and some ships go by more than one name. So I decided to make a post on this, including a list all the ones I know of, alongside origins and (to best of my knowledge) commonness of usage if there’s more than one. As to why this becomes a complicated thing to wrangle, this might give you insight: By “origins”, I mean origins of the name for the ship: some are obvious and some less so.  There are some that are irregular and come from no pattern common to other names in the fandom, but there are some common patterns in general. For instance, most of them understandably involve part of the involved characters’ names smacked together. However, you may find that it varies, for instance, whether it’s the original Japanese or English translation spellings that are smacked together; whether it’s a first name or last name; whether it is their initials, a proper portmanteau, firmly delineated abbreviations, etc., as well as the order the names are put together. You’ll see what I mean as you go through the list, as far as those go. In all of these cases it’s also not unheard of, depending on which site you’re on, to see Character/Character or Character x Character variants too (for one, Archive of Our Own basically lists all ships that way, since they have a specific feature to search by pairings). But a lot of these do have names. And some of them...maybe they do, maybe they don’t? I’m going to leave ??? In cases where I haven’t seen one or can’t remember it but feel like there probably is some out there; feel free to reblog with additional expansions! For the sake of fairness, I’m going to try and go alphabetical and for brevity’s sake and, honestly, just because I’m more familiar with them, these are the only characters I’m covering -- though you can feel free to expand the list! Aerith [aka “Aeris”] Gainsborough (”Aerith”), Angeal Hewley (”Angeal”); Barret Wallace (”Barret”), Cid Highwind (”Cid”), Cloud Strife (”Cloud”), Genesis Rhapsodos (”Genesis”), Sephiroth (...”Sephiroth”), Tifa Lockhart (”Tifa”), Vincent Valentine (”Vincent”), Yuffie Kisaragi (”Yuffie”), Zack Fair (”Zack”) Aerith  x Angeal: I have never seen a name for this and they never canonically met, but...tbh I kinda headcanon they’d get along famously. If anybody has a name for it, let me know!

Aerith x Barret: ???  Aerith X Cid: ??? Aerith X Cloud: “ Clerith “. I’ve never seen a second one. This is THE ship name, as far as I know. Origin: Portmanteau of Cloud + Aerith Aerith x Genesis: ??? (ahahaha wow. No, I’ve never seen this one either. I have a hard time picturing it. But you never know!)  

Aerith x Sephiroth: I think I may have seen “ AerSeph “ or “AeriSeph ”. Origin:  Abbreviation of “Aerith” and “Sephiroth”. 

Aerith x Tifa: “Aerti” or “AerTi”, Origin: Abbreviation of their first names, Aerith + Tifa.

Aerith x Vincent: ??? Aerith x Yuffie: ??? Aerith x Zack: “Zerith”, also occasionally spelled “Zaerith”; Origin: Portmantaeu of Zack + Aerith.

Angeal x Cloud: “Cloudgeal”, a portmanteau of Cloud + Angeal.

Angeal x Genesis: “Banorashipping”. Origin: And here we go, the first truly irregular ship name on the list! This one comes from the fact that “Banora” is the name of Angeal and Genesis’ home town in Crisis Core. For whatever reason I have never seen it in anything other than verb form, making it a really irregular ship name. Angeal x Genesis x Sephiroth: “AGS”. See, this is why I called this post “ship names” and not “pairing names”. This one is actually reasonably common as ship! Origin: Initials of their given names, Angeal Genesis Sephiroth. Also doubles as a shorthand for the characters as a trio in non-romantic contexts as well, though they’re sometimes referred to as the “SOLDIER Trio” in non-romantic contexts too.

Angeal x Genesis x Sephiroth x Zack: “AGSZ”; you get the pattern here by now, I assume. Initials of Angeal Genesis Sephiroth and Zack. There’s actually a slight reason for the ordering, which we’ll get to in the next listing.

Angeal x Genesis x Sephiroth x Zack x Cloud: “AGSZC”, also known as “the OT5″. Initials of Angeal Genesis Sephiroth Zack and Cloud. First coined by Tobiroth aka modeoheim , popularized by both Tobi and others who’ve been in her circle and her circle’s circles, such as asreoninfusion and more recently, up-sideand-down. I have also seen the variant “AGS/ZC” for a fic where Cloud wasn’t with the other three, but was paired with Zack.

Angeal x Sephiroth: Historically referred to as “AngSeph”, an abbreviation of Angeal + Sephiroth, a recent alternative exists that was spread initially via 10kiaoi​ ‘s blog: “One-Winged Angeal” (also spelled “One Winged Angeal”), a pun on Sephiroth’s nickname as "the one-winged angel” (itself taken from the title to the most famous piece of music from FFVII to date, which was one of his boss themes). 

Angeal x Zack: “Zangeal”,  Portmanteau of Zack + Angeal.

 ...actually I don’t know any of the Barret ships other than: Barret x Cloud: “Clarret” or occasionally “Claret”, Origin: Portmanteau of Cloud + Barret. But I wish I knew: Barret  x Cid: ??? Barret x Tifa: ???

Barret x Vincent: ??? Cid x Cloud: ??? Cid x Vincent: “Valenwind”, Portmanteu of their last names, Valentine + Highwind.

Cloud x Genesis: “GenCloud”, given name abbrev., Genesis + Cloud. I believe the user cloudvelundr​ has also referred to this ship as “Scarlet & Gold”, in reference to their hair/signature colors -- though this may refer mostly to their fic series of the same name. “Strifesodos”, a portmanteau of their last names, Strife + Rhapsodos  is also super common.

Cloud x Sephiroth: Sefikura; Origin: abbreviated Portmanteau from their Japanese names, Sefirosu + Kuraudo. You might occasionally see “SephCloud” (Which simply has abbreviations of their English-language names), but it’s almost universally “Sefikura” even in English-language fandom. Many, many, MANY people also use some variant of “every cloud has a silver lining” as a tag, because god does this fandom love its puns. I’ve also seen “silver and gold”, referring to their hair colors again. Cloud x Tifa: “Cloti” or “CloTi”, Portmanteau/abbreviation of given names, Cloud + Tifa. Pretty universal.

Cloud x Vincent: “Strifentine”, portmanteau of last names, Strife + Valentine. That’s the most common, though I have seen “VinCloud” before too, an abbreviation of Vincent’s first name + Cloud’s.

Cloud x Yuffie: ??? Cloud x Zack: The most common current form is “Clack”, a punny portmanteau of their English-language names, Cloud + Zack, but you will sometimes see “Zakkura” an abbreviated portmanteau of their Japanese names, Zakkusu + Kuraudo.

Genesis x Sephiroth: I’ve seen both “GenSeph” and “GeniSeph”, abbreviations of their first names. Recently people have been using “Sephesis” (A portmanteau of their first names) as well though as that sounds like a disease of some sort I can’t bring myself to favor it. To each their own, though. :P

Genesis x Zack: “GenZack” (an abbreviation of Genesis’ first name + Zack’s) is the most common, though I’m somewhat fond of the portmanteau “Zenesis” (it’s much rarer, though...I think I may be the only person who ever used it lol).

Sephiroth x Tifa: ??? Apparently this exists, but I haven’t seen it much and have no idea how it is tagged. The inner punster in me wants to called it “SeTi” because I am a nerd though (get it? Se + Ti? Search for Extra Terreestial Intelligence? Anybody? Yeah, I’m a nerd. I’m sorry)

Sephiroth x Zack: I’ve seen “SephZack” (an abbreviation of Sephiroth’s name + Zack’s) quite a bit, but I’m personally fond of (read: thought of and really like) the portmanteau “Zephiroth”.

Tifa x Vincent: ??? 

Tifa x Yuffie: ???  Tifa x Zack: ??? Please tell me this is called “Tack”, that would just about make my day.

Vincent x Yuffie: ??? Yuffie seems to ship it, so why not?

Yuffie x Zack: ??? Is there a name for this yet, either romantically or as a “brotp”? If not, I personally vote for “Yack”.

Any others I’ve missed?
