Drifting.
Floating.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
Shiro could only see a dark mist hovering around him. The metallic smell of blood coming off of it burned his nostrils. He was standing in some sort of dark colored water, though it was only up to his shins.
“Hello?” Shiro, stupidly as he instantly realized, said. “Is anyone there?”
The water moved around him.
Against his better judgement but completely in line with horror movie protagonist logic, Shiro turned to see what it was. “Hello?” He asked again.
More movement behind him.
“I know you’re there!” Shiro turned to it again, anger bubbling up. “Show yourself!”
The metallic smell grew stronger.
A hand grabbed his ankle. He looked down, seeing a mangled, rotting hand.
To his horror, it looked human.
Shiro’s heart began beating rapidly, his breathing becoming desperate as he saw the hand was not attached to anything, perfectly cut at the elbow.
His arm began to hurt with an intense burning pain. He didn’t have time to think about it as another hand grabbed his other ankle. Looking there, he saw there was a body attached to it, but he wished he didn’t see it.
The rotting mangled corpse that held onto him with unnatural strength wheezed, and began clutching to him with its other hand. Its eyes, long dead, glowed as the mist surrounded it, its form growing as it continued climbing up his body until it was leaning on his shoulders, face to face with it.
The mist gave way, revealing the sick grin of Haggar.
Shiro woke up screaming, her cackling ringing in his head as he clutched his arm.
“Taka!” Ryou’s voice was faint but somehow right there. “Taka! Wake up!”
He could feel arms wrapping around him, tight and warm. His screams died down but the fear and pain was still there, gnawing at his core.
“Shh,” Ryou’s voice became clearer. “Shh. Just listen to my voice. Feel my arms around you. I’m right here Takashi.”
It took a long long time for Shiro to realize he was awake.
How long, he couldn’t say.
Shiro was huddled in the closet with Ryou, still sniffling and teary eyed. Ryou was humming to him, and now Shiro could hear a purr in his head as well. His hands were wrapped around one of Ryou’s, as his brother’s free hand stroked his hair.
His breathing was still shaky, but not as shallow or desperate as before.
“Are you feeling a bit better?” Ryou asked, kissing Shiro’s forehead.
“A little.” Shiro’s voice was hoarse as he lied.
“Taka.” Ryou caught on to it.
“Ryou.” Shiro tightened his ground on Ryou’s hand. He couldn’t tell him that the corpse in his nightmare, before it turned into Haggar, was…
“Okay, okay.” Ryou kissed him again. “I won’t ask, but don’t lie to me. Please.”
Shiro let out another shaking breath, burying his face into Ryou’s chest.
They stayed huddled in that little empty room for another long while. After some time, they had wandered to the kitchen. Ryou made some quick breakfast for the both of them. Not mush, as Shiro made it clear he was not in the mood for it, but nothing complicated like Hunk would make.
Slowly, they ate. Not so much to savor the meal, however. Shiro and Ryou didn’t say much, at least verbally.
Needless to say, Shiro was a bit off that whole day, and the Paladins definitely noticed. He was able to wave it off as just having an off day with no rhyme or reason. Not that they were easily convinced by such an excuse but Ryou assured them things would be okay.
“Shiro.” Allura pulled him aside during a lull in activity in the Castle. “Ryou told me you have been having trouble sleeping.”
“It’s not too much trouble,” Shiro insisted, though Allura was still determined.
“Still,” Allura sighed. “I’m concerned for your well being. Don’t tell Coran, but-” one of the mice, Chuchule-emerged from Allura’s hair with a small vial of a pale purple-ish pinkish colored liquid with a few bubbles in it. “I did find a sleeping medicine. It’s a bit strong, especially for your species, but a single drop should suffice.”
Chug the whole thing, Shiro’s lesser known impulsive side suddenly thought. “One drop.” He echoed as he held the vial in his hand. “Got it.”
That night, Shiro did his best to ignore that impulsive voice and took one carefully measured drop of the medicine, surprised that it smelled like lavender. A part of him felt weak for relying on such things, but it couldn’t hurt to try, right?
He was asleep in a few minutes, which also surprised him. He was sure it’d take a bit longer for the medicine to take effect, or at least long enough for Shiro to properly place the vial somewhere where Ryou might not find it. Soon, however, he felt a floating sensation.
Floating.
Drifting.
He opened his eyes to the astral plane.
“Black?” Shiro looked around. She wouldn’t pull him into the astral plane without reason, right?
No response.
“Black?” Shiro called again.
Rest here.
She replied, quickly, as if rushing.
Shiro let out a sigh. “If you say so.” He took a seat. Then tried to lie down. The floor wasn’t comfortable when he was here to fight Zarkon and it sure as hell wasn’t magically comfortable-
That can be arranged.
The floor underneath him suddenly felt softer, like bedding.
“How-?” Shiro began to ask, surprised at this development.
This space is malleable. Simply think, and it will appear.
“Of course. Classic dreamscape logic.” Shiro laid back down, feeling a bit more comfortable. A thought did cross his mind, whether the voice of the Black Lion he was hearing was in fact her or just his subconscious trying to seem friendly, though he let it slide. For now, he was going to get some very much needed beauty sleep.
A whining sound caught his attention.
“Ryou.” Shiro recognized it. He sat up. Something was wrong. “Ryou!” Shiro tried to wake himself up. Slapping his cheeks, pinching himself, rolling off the floating bed to try and recreate that irritating falling sensation that kept him up almost every other time he tried to sleep. Nothing was working. “Ryou!”
What’s wrong?
“It’s Ryou.” Shiro was looking around frantically, unsure of what to do. “He’s having a nightmare-I have to wake up!”
The medicine is strong. But there is a way.
“Tell me!” Shiro begged, the whining now in his ears. “Please.”
It will cost an immense amount of energy.
“Please Black.” Shiro felt himself tearing up. “I have to wake up.”
Jerking awake, his body felt heavy and shaky. He looked to Ryou. Still as ever, save for the slight twitch in his hands. Quiet, save for the small whimpers.
“Ryou,” Shiro took hold of one of Ryou’s hands as he hugged his brother closer. “I’m right here. It’s just a dream. I’m right here.”
The next night, Shiro did not take the so called medicine.
