I’ll admit that after the last book I felt about ready to be done with this series, but receiving an eARC for this and some terrific early reviews, I took a chance.

I started this while in a pretty deep reading slump/all around slump (I’ve been deeply concerned about the state of the nation/world, etc., ad infinitum) and began it with some trepidation. But, I decided to just see where the story went and to try to read without any expectation.

I’m glad I did, because this one made chuckle throughout; I enjoyed Mrs Haggerty, Cam, that the relationship between Finlay and Nick went through some growth, and appreciated a plot that kept me turning the pages.

Weekly Roundup: Kids Relocating, “Gilded Age” S2 Finale, “Quiz Lady,” “Finlay Donovan Is Killing It,” and 10 Years of Podcasting

On our latest weekly roundup, some of our kids are moving back and forth from college, and one is moving down to the basement apartment... little by little. What we're watching: On The Gilded Age, there were many winners and a few losers in the season 2 finale, "In Terms of Winning and Losing." While we're sad that the show has not (as yet) been renewed for season 3, we also kind of wouldn't mind letting these characters stay where they landed in this episode. We also watched the movie Quiz Lady, which you can find on Hulu. It stars Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as a pair of sisters, but the twist is that Sandra Oh is the screw-up and Awkwafina is the straitlaced one. The movie also has enough fun little twists (plus dogs!) to make it a lot of fun. Catherine's library find this week is Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano. It's the first in a series about a mom and suspense novelist who gets mixed up in some real-life crime, with her trusty babysitter as her sidekick. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed parenting trends to take or leave (December 21, 2021), parenting trends of the decade (December 18, 2019), crazy jobs and crazier elves (December 18, 2015), and our very first episode: Holiday Parenting Joys and Jangles (December 18, 2013; be warned that the production quality is best described as "primitive"). ​ We're taking the next two weeks off for the holidays (we think we've earned it, after 10 years!). We'll be back in January. Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available. Happy New Year!

Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun by Elle Cosimano is our third adventure with Finlay "finlay owes a favor to the Russian mob boss, Feliks. He wants her to find a contract killer before the police do. But the killer might be an officer. Luckily, hot cop Nick, has started a citizen's police academy. The pressure from Feliks and Finlay's looming book deadline convince her and Vero to get involved. It's the perfect cover to ferret out an assassin, find some time with Nick and finish her book by deadline." Finlay reminds me so much of Stephanie Plum. There are lots of insane characters and situations. Finlay is making things up as she goes along. Especially as she finds out even more secrets about Vero. There are plenty of red herrings and some inspiration for her book. There is a cliffhanger which seems to be the way EC sets up the next book. I'm not really a fan of leaving a storyline hanging, but there it is. Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead by Elle Cosimano is her follow-up novel to the wildly hilarious Finlay Donovan is Killing It.. "Finlay is again struggling to finish her next novel and to keep her head above water as a single mom of two. She does have her live-in nanny and confidant, Vero, to rely on. She discovers in an online women's forum that someone wants her ex-husband dead. As much as she dislikes him, she doesn't want her children to be without their father. Vero is keeping secrets and Detective Nick is trying to get back into her life. Finlay just wants to finish her book and find the killer without anyone getting killed." I love the character of Finlay. We can all relate to those moments where life is overwhelming - the car won't work, the checking account is low, and life is just stressful. But Finlay pushes through all of her problems (with Vero's help) and finds a way to make things work. And EC puts her in some crazy situations. There are so many hilarious moments here - especially with Carl. 😳😂 I like that Cosimano gives us more depth with these characters. It's great to find out more about Vero and Julian. Another great story from Cosimano. Finlay Donovan has become one of my favorite fictional characters.
