FISH EMERGENCY

A few months ago I mentioned that my two tail betta fish, Loulou, had the fringe of his tail turning oddly opaque and white. I posted here to ask opinions, and ended up checking everything from new growth, to ich, to velvet, to fin rot, to regular wear and tear.

This was Lou when I got him, compared to about a six months later btw:

Out of my own depth, I went to an aquarist in town and showed them pictures, describing my concerns. They told me that it was most likely damage from something abrasive in his tank

The thing is though, I don't HAVE anything abrasive in his tank??? He has a ceramic skull hide, which is a little bumpy but otherwise fine, and a smooth flat rock, and his substrate. All his plants are real and his water pump is protected by a sponge.

I left him in the care of a sitter about three weeks ago, and when I came back, his fins were noticeably shorter and far more haggard. I gave his tank a super thorough clean in case it was fin rot and told myself I'd go back to the aquarist later this week, when I'm not at work.

Then today I came home to THIS:

Photos are bad cause it's nighttime and he didn't wanna hold still for pictures despite treats but his fins have MULTIPLE broken spines and his upper tail is BLEEDING?

I noticed a bit of red on him the other day and mistakenly believed he was changing colours again, but it's DEFINITELY blood.

He has no other tank mates except for a few snails I put in there to handle the plants.

I thought maybe he was chewing himself or something but he cant reach the spots that are missing.

I'm sorry to post this here, but has anyone with fish seen this before??? I've had him for almost a whole year now and have not had this happen before

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated, I'm taking everything solid out of his tank until I know what's happening.

I used to have fish when I was little to prove that I can handle pets so I could get a hamster but my hamster died like 3-4 years ago and I feel like that fish are low maintenance I’m obviously going to research some things first but idk it’s a thought

Seeking Betta Fish Information

So I always wanted a betta fish, and while I sorta had one as a wee bab, it didn’t live long because my parents obvs didn’t know anything about fish care. It’s a miracle my childhood goldfish lived as long as she did ngl So I’m seeking any and all information and resources for proper betta fish care! Please, fish lovers of Tumblr, lend me your wisdom! Some overall questions I have include... - Can I also have a snail in the tank or is that a bad idea for a male betta? - I’m leaning towards artificial plants cause I have a black thumb and don’t want the plant dying immediately - what should I look for in artificial plant life for a happy betta fish? - Can I also get a Marimo Moss Ball? I’ve seen them sold together but I feel that doesn’t mean much when it comes to pet stores. - I have a decent tank, but the filter that came with it is kina eh. Filter recommendations for a 5 gallon tank? I’d love to one day upgrade to a bigger tank but in my own research a 5 gallon as good for a single male betta. - My aerator for my tank is a little treasure chest with a diver attached. It was intended for when I had a goldfish. Should I remove the diver or is he okay? - Recommended types of decor for betta fish happiness? (hiding spots, those resting leaves with the suction cup????, anything else) - I want to eventually make a hiding spot if it is beneficial, but I’m unsure on aquarium safe supplies. I want to make it look like baba yaga’s house with a removable roof for cleaning. Would this be doable? Or does one already exist that I can just buy and not risk toxic chemicals in my aquarium? - I’ve seen several food types. Is a particular type best or would a variety be ideal? - Literally any other information would be loved! Also reblog please to spread so I can get as much quality information as I can!

I have a tropical 64L aquarium with a filter, heater and air pump

I have 8 male guppies

5 black neon tetras

3 albino corydora

2 male dwarf gouramis

6 shrimp

And a gazillion snails from somewhere idk

Hello Fishblr! I’m a college student and I really wanted to get a betta to have in my dorm. Ive read into how to keep betta and want to make sure the little guy is comfortable and happy. I bought a 5.5 gallon tank from a local fish store and have started cycling it, using fish food to add ammonia and testing the water every night.

It’s been about 2 weeks since I set the tank up to cycle and the nitrite is still at 0

I’ve talked to my girlfriend, who successfully set up a 30 gallon tank of goldfish and she said that the nitrite should be going up by now.

i read that it could be that the water is chlorinated, so I am going to add more water conditioner to it. Is there any other advice anyone has that could be helpful?

Tried to get some pics of her belly, what do you guys think? Is she bloated/constipated? Possibly holding some eggs that she hasn't reabsorbed? Or is she just overweight from overfeeding?

Its definitely not dropsy, shes not really that bloated and she definitely isn't pinecone-ing. She's very active and isn't having swimming issues and she still has a ravenous appetite (she's NOT happy that she hasnt been fed in 2 days).

For background: she's about 2 years old and is 2 inches long (she's a big girl). She lives in a 30 gallon tank with some other smaller fish, and she has definitely been over-fed in the past. Shes been round like this for quite a while.

The tank has no ammonia, nitrites are just about at 0, and nitrates are low (i forget the exact number but I just tested the water and everything is well within the safe zone). The tank is fully planted so it's pretty stable. No signs of illness in any of the fish... just a chonky betta.

Thanks to anyone who has input! I just don't want to try to give her a salt bath and risk doing damage if she's just overweight and needs her diet adjusted. I've been working on getting her to flare a bit for some exercise and I'm going to be netting her when feeding to stop her from overeating.

I am by no means an expert on fish and this community has been a huge help to me on my adventures in fishkeeping, so thank you all so much :)

If anyone has tips on raising possibly 14 corydora catfish babies I will be eternally grateful.

I have two corycats and they just happen to be the opposite sex and it was finally the right conditions and they have laid eggs!

I've seperated the eggs into a cup attached to the inside of the tank out of reach from the parents cause I know they like to eat them.

If anyone's got tips and/or first hand experience on how to care for them once they've hatched I would love to hear it! For the record, I never planned on breeding them, I just happened to get two fish of opposite sex. I'm going to give the baby fish away to friends and family if they want them and can take care of them once they are old enough as to not overcrowd my tank. (I may keep one or two tho)
