He’d watched the map and the little marker labelled Regulus Black with the tip of his lit wand. The marker moved closer and closer to his own and, just as it passed, James stuck his hand out and grabbed Regulus, yanking him back into the secrecy of his hiding place.
Regulus yelped but once he’d realised it was James he calmed down and waited, smiling up at him. James wrapped his hands around Regulus’s waist and leaned in.
Regulus was greedy. His fingers slid into James’s hair and James moaned at the contact, closing the space between them before his brain could catch up.
Sirius had been waiting for him last night once he’d seen Regulus safely back to his Common room. It hadn’t been nearly as bad as James had anticipated. Yes. Sirius had started in a flap, pacing back and forth in front of the windows on the far side of the Gryffindor Common room. But once he’d gotten out all the ‘He’s my little brother, James’s’ and the 'Why did it have to be him? You could pick anyone in the whole school, why him’s?’ And settled down enough to listen to James’s side of the story. He’d hung his head and sighed.
“Okay, James. I’m not going to stand in your way or meddle, but please, just be careful, alright? Don’t hurt him.” Sirius had looked up at James with pleading eyes that nearly broke James’s heart. He grabbed his friend in a bruising hug and swore that if it worked out with Reg, that he’d do everything in his power to make him happy.
So he’d hidden behind a tapestry where he knew Regulus would walk past and waited for him.
His mind began to fixate on the feeling of those slender fingers scratching against his scalp and he lost himself in the boy he’d pressed into the wall, hoping that this could be more and not just a little fling. He let his mind drift to that little country cottage he’d dreamed about all night and the happy life that came with it.
He dragged himself away from Regulus’s lips.
“Can I take you on a proper date?” He asked, slightly breathless. He watched as Regulus’s eyes widened a fraction.
“When?” Regulus asked, his voice wary, his fingers stilled in James’s tangled hair.
“Tonight? I’ll come get you from outside your Common room. Under the cloak, of course.” He added as he watched the colour drain from Regulus’s face as the fingers slid from his hair. The other boy swallowed but nodded his head in quick little bobs.
“Yeah, okay. What will we be doing?” Regulus agreed. James felt his heart soar, and he couldn’t help it. He pressed a sweet kiss on Regulus’s lips.
“That’s a surprise, love. 8pm, I’ll be waiting.” And without another word he slipped out from behind the tapestry and headed to his next lesson, silently planning the perfect date.
