The first super team was the justice society of America, formed by and answering to the United States government. There were many heroes that filled the ranks of this legendary team, the most important to the story being Jay Garrick Flash, Alan Scott Green Lantern, Dinah Drake Black Canary, Hippolyta Wonder Woman, the hawks (Hawkman and Hawkwoman) and Kent Nelson Dr. Fate. They eventually went on to retire after a solid decade of superheroism, and new heroes rose to fill their boots.

Who is Jay Garrick? | A Reading Guide

Jay Garrick is the first Flash from DC Comics, introduced in 1940, Jay gained his powers as the result of inhaling hard water vapor fumes. Jay based his operations out of Keystone City and would become a founding member of the Justice Society of America and fought in the All-Star Squadron during WWII. Despite his difficultly addressing the death of his son, Jay has proven to be a caring mentor to younger Speedsters and heroes.
