fleshing a big ol stubborn opossum
Fleshed vs unfleshed skin on a calf hide I’m working on, done with a wire wheel.
Fleshing is an essential step for pelt preparation, as any flesh that remains after tanning will eventually rot and ruin the pelt. The remaining membrane will be removed after the hide soaks in a pickle for 1-2 days, since the pickle will plump up the skin and make it much easier to get the leftover membrane off.

Fleshing progress was a hassle, but the new tool i bought made it a breeze to get the fat off. Opossums have pretty thin skin and not too much fat which made it quicker. Its just very time consuming and works your arms real good, phew. Shes all salted up now, then i gotta use my tanning solution on it. Wish me luck!

Is there anything I can use as an alternative to a fleshing knife? I live in the UK so skinning equipment isn't that easy to get hold of at short notice. Sorry if this is a silly ask.
In a pinch I use dull scalpel blades (#10 works but #22 is larger so it’s easier to hold)! Those may still have to be ordered though, as I’m not sure if you guys have an equivalent of a Tractor Supply Company there that may have them in stock (you get them out of castration kits in the US). A spoon or a very dull knife will also work, as well as a ceramic loop tools!
