Plant of the Day
Wednesday 12 July 2017
The male catkins of Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut, Spanish chestnut) are up to 15cm in length, and the female flowers are smaller but if pollination is successful they will be followed by spiny fruits containing the edible nuts. These large, vigorous deciduous tree have rugged, grooved bark that swirls around the trunk with age.
