When Bilbo eventually finds out and storms into Erebor demanding answers, it's honestly Thorin's saving grace. Turns out he was *not* prepared for the appetite of a growing faunt.

Thorin: "I don't know what to do Amrâlimê, he already eats FIVE meals a day!"

Bilbo: "You've ONLY been feeding him five meals a day!?!?"
