For your sake, Lily, I made some rules; the characters I chose can't simply be sympathetic with an excuse for what they do ala Nowhere King/General/Elktaur and they also can't be only a manipulative bastard who literally doesn't care about anything but their own glory like Emperor Belos/Philip. No Jack Skellingtons or Syndromes either. I tried my very hardest to follow your "has to be good"-rule, which in my hands is "can't be written in a way to which the writer is either forgiving the character's shortcomings OR villainizing a specific mindset."

A villain with a genuine point to make can be a really compelling, tragic, WONDERFUL character as that's almost always some kind of person with a level of self-awareness, pain and even good in their heart still who has fallen HARD. A villain with a point can also be an absolutely horrifying obstacle for your heroes, because just like in real life, awful people will use your own faults and the preexisting misery of the world to justify their own actions.

A moment of pride

From Chapter 80: A Trial For the Worthy:

"You… You were amazing, back there," he murmured, his eyes shining. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were Halone herself, cloaked in a golden light when you threw your lance through Nidhogg's skull…"

She shook her head with a chuckle. "You're just exhausted. It was really all thanks to Hraesvelgr - without him, we wouldn't still be here."

He gave a hum that suggested perhaps he didn't quite believe her, but nodded all the same, beginning his shuffle back towards the city. 

Walking through the city proved… strange. Around them, many worked on putting out fires and clearing the roads of debris. But others simply… stood and watched the two dragoons made their way along the cobblestone streets, some pointing, some whispering… And all of it filled Jess with pride for her friend. From having his family slain by Nidhogg to being the one to bring the great wyrm down…

"You're a legend now," she leaned in and whispered to her companion beside her.

He shook his head with a weak laugh. "So are you."

That, she doubted, but she couldn't deny she did lend some rather pivotal support to ending the war. But the people knew Varrus, celebrated Varrus… not her.

The Ringer’s 100 Best TV Episodes of The Century

After sorting through hundreds of shows from the past 18 years, 'The Ringer' presents a definitive ranking of the best episodes since the turn of the century

This is a really fun list to go through, even though everybody’s bound to disagree with most of it. In no particular order, the biggest travesties for me on this list are: - The lack of cartoons! Aside from Bojack and Rick & Morty (the acceptable 'adult' choices apparently), there's nothing to indicate that we've been in an era of astonishingly great cartoons. There's no 'I Remember You' from Adventure Time, no 'Tales of Ba Sing Se' from Avatar: The last Airbender, no 'Weirdmageddon 2' from Gravity Falls, no 'Alone Together' from Steven Universe. It's weird -- I honestly forget that it's fairly common for adults to have a jaundiced view of cartoons as being dumb kid stuff. Steven Universe is flat-out the most interesting and ambitious and emotionally complex show on television right now, and it's not even that close. The listmakers just don't seem to have any of these shows on their radar, and have no idea what they're missing. - Having an episode of True Detective in the top 4. Style over substance, pure and simple. Calling that raid scene "virtuosic film-making" is like ... on a technical level, sure, I guess, but did that raid scene actually *mean* anything? Did it actually do anything other than look cool? People falling for True Detective's hype while it was airing is understandable, but I don't get why people are still propping it up now, long after it became clear that the show's pretensions to depth and profundity were totally hollow. It's the exact opposite of Steven Universe, in that it *looks* all mature and meaningful and complex, but underneath all that is just unimaginative stereotypes clacking against each other emptily. - Praising the finale of Battlestar Galactica. I really liked Battlestar Galactica, but come on now: the finale stunk. The last season went so off the rails with all the spiritual mumbo-jumbo, and betrayed (the way I experienced it at least) what made the show compelling in the first place. There's a bit in the quoted discussion where one of the writers says that Battlestar's finale "is a spiritual companion to the Lost finale" ... but the writer means that sentence in a positive sense!!! What!!! - Choosing the season 4 episode of Dexter where Rita is gratuitously killed. Just, no. The show had already gone way downhill by this point, and this episode was a desperate schlocky attempt to shock the audience into continuing to pay attention. It sucked, and made me immediately stop watching the show. (To be fair, I should have already done once season 3 started floundering). The idea that they're rewarding such a hack move -- the most pointless fridging of a female character imaginable -- grinds my gears to no end.
