Future Captains Club

Ennoshita: A club needs regulations, by laws. You guys got any rules?

Shirabu: Yes, no first-years.

Yahaba: And everybody has to be under seventeen, so no old guys.

Thank you for answering my question about Ennoshita! Then, among the 1st years, who would be the future captain?

And here’s the controversial question.

To be honest, I can’t see who would be able to step up to the task. All four have good captain qualities, but they also have traits that make them unsuitable. I’ve seen arguments for and against each of them, and I’m still undecided. I think in the end I’m working by a process of elimination and it’s ….

Actually I’ll go through them all first.

Kageyama 

Pro

+ Great game sense+ Knows the sort of toss each player needs+ Is trying hard to make himself amenable

Cons- Socially inept- Will he ever get on with Tsukki?- Would intimidate the fuck out of the new first years. (Don’t get me wrong. Some form of intimidation and discipline is necessary - we’ve seen that with Daichi and Kuroo, but they also need to be approachable. And Kags is not approachable unless you’re willing to die (Hinata) or your sass knows no bounds (Suga and Ennoshita).

Hinata

Pro+ Sunshine ball who works well with everyone+ Not overly intimidating until he gets INTENSE+ Is an inspiration with his work ethic+ Motivates everyone around him

Cons- He’s Hinata who is still a bit of an idiot (but see later)- He’s so little. (I’m little, I  know what it’s like being overlooked)

Tsukishima

Pro+ Can really take control of a match+ Had the courage to approach the senpais and say ‘Can I take charge of blocks?+ Has an intimidating aura

Cons- Like Kags, he’d intimidate the fuck out of the new first years and maybe not be able to get them back on side.- His work ethic used to suck, don’t think he can motivate ppl.- Will he ever be friends with anyone other than Yamaguchi?

Yamaguchi

Pro+ Work ethic is amazing+ Talented and starting to realise his own worth+ Good at handling people (Kags, Hinata, Tsukki)

Cons- He’s not a regular. - He’s a sweetheart

And here’s where the main controversy is, because I know the fandom is veering towards Captain Yams, but I don’t think he will be a regular until maybe his third year. It could be enough, as Ennoshita isn’t a regular either, but Ennoshita does seem to have more confidence about himself than Yams will have.And Ennoshita has the support of the other second years (and Daichi’s practically handed him the armband already). Yams can’t move like the others and his speciality is a pinch serve. Is this enough? Could he be the sort of Captain Kita from Inarizaki appears to be, that is one on the sidelines? Does he have that strength of character? Yamaguchi is likeable and loveable but I don’t believe he’s ruthless enough. 

Another thing that should be taken into account is ‘who wants the job?’

Imo, Kageyama would only want to be Captain because Oikawa was. Which isn’t the greatest of motives. Tsukishima would only want to be captain if Kageyama (and possibly Hinata) wanted to be, partly because he believes they’re both idiots, but also because there’s still this streak in him that does enough to get by, until his ethos is challenged. He’s very self-focused and has personal battles, but could he turn them into team battles. Would he want to? I really can’t see Yamaguchi wanting to take everything on his shoulders, but he’d be an excellent Vice Captain under Tsukki or Kags or maybe HInata. Of the four of them, I think Hinata is the one who would want to be Captain, and that’s partly because then he’d ‘beat’ Kageyama but he has this incredible will to succeed and to prove his worth. Does this make him the best candidate for the job? Wanting to lead is half the battle. Being able to is the other. 

If we look at the current captains, then we see there’s no one type. To my mind, Daichi is the most well rounded of all the Captains. He’s encouragaing, a little self-deprecating, a disciplinarian, and knows how to get the best out of his players. Non-flashy, he lets the others take starring roles for the good of the team. Kuroo is similar, although I’d argue he’s more confrontational and thus more intimidating. I don’t think, for instance, that he’s handled Lev that well (I don’t think many of them in Nekoma are fair to Lev, tbph) although before the Nohebi match, he made an effort to reassure him and became an excellent senpai. He’s a provocation expert who sometimes steps on the landmine. Oikawa is an excellent Captain, who can get the best out of his players, but he’s also surrounded by three third years that are equally able to motivate and offer opinions. When Oikawa used to take his time outs separate so he could focus, he must have relied on Iwa-chan, Mattsun and Makki to keep the others focused. Having said that, I do think he’s second only to Daichi in my (possibly biased) Captain stakes.  Ushijima is a figurehead. He’s Captain Incredible. Miracle Boy Wakatoshi, who inspires by being there, the one they all aspire to be, beat, play along side. But it was noticeable how surprised they all were when he gave each player words of advice and encouragement after they’d lost. It was unexpected, so I get the feeling this wasn’t a regular occurence.  Did this hands off approach matter? Didn’t seem to. They were still an incredibly strong team and a complete unit. The final Captain style we see is Bokuto’s. He’s another, like Ushiwaka, who is the Ace and the example. He really does inspire, both his team and the opposition. And he’s so fricking generous too. He LOVES watching an amazing play and his enthusiasm is infectious. But … he has his dejected mode. And although his team are used to it and make allowances, which do in the end make them a better team, it’s not desirable to have a captain who can be flakey. And, like Hinata, he’s a bit of an idiot.Actually I’ve left out a lot of them, but I should also mention Futakuchi because he’s such a shit stirrer. Is he a good Captain? It looks as if he’s going to get results, and although he’s a wind-up merchant, he’s also good at giving advice at the right time. (Slam it down!)

In conclusion, none of the first years are particularly like the Captains we’ve already seen except for Hinata/Bokuto, and Tsukishima/Futakuchi. And I can’t make a decision, except to say that the current third years need to not leave, or the new first years come in and are incredibly mature and stable, so they leapfrog over them. OR … someone from another team has to repeat a year at Karasuno and thus Karasuno are led by … uh … Akaashi!
