Star Wars: Threats Of The Galaxy (2008)
Linguists: while they have complicated histories, all languages are valid and interesting examples of how humans exist and behave and communicate
Me *making Galactic Basic into an in-universe conlang created by the Republic Department of Linguistic Standards (DoLS) to impose Republic cultural domination in advance of Republic political and economic domination as a weapon against Hutt & other factions' potential control over systems, often with the effect of replacing and wiping out the indigenous languages of entire planets due to way it was created to be easy to learn for a wide variety of species and linguistic backgrounds*: sure yeah but this one is evil
Linguists: well…umm…uhh…first of all you’re vastly overestimating your ability to make a language that appeals to as wide a variety of first language speakers and second… Umm…and no language is—well—hmm…
Me: but also it's the only language the clones are taught growing up. Which is a tragedy among tragedies of course but they'll also adapt it and add new words and make a patchwork from other languages they hear on a thousand different planets and study during long hyperspace journeys, and they'll code switch to perfect "standard phonology" basic with certain people and most of their self-invented names are in Basic too because no one ever gave them names and nobody else actually names their kids in Basic because there are barely any names in Basic and this whole thing will be a form of Basic largely untouched by the Republic education systems beholden to the DoLS for funding
Linguists *hurriedly packing their bags to come and study this*:
👀👀👀
Me *in a convertible, smug*: get in losers, it's called BibiuBubui and you're late

😂
As if Jabba doesn’t understand.
Have you learned any youngling slang? Gotta stay hip with the youth my guy. Or at least make them die of cringe when you use their words.
The locals' dialects are pretty interesting to begin with, and we're trying to get everyone accustomed to Galactic Basic, but youngling slang can be like a language all its own.
Took me a week of teaching before they explained that they weren't actually insulting me when I overheard them call me a "dink." It's some kind of rhyming slang thing thing: Since I like fiddling with machines, I'm a "tinkerer," and that gets shortened to "tink" which rhymes with "dink."
Language is kriffing wild, bruh.
Now, I just automatically assume any non-standard words they say are some kind of swear or curse. I don't punish them for it, or anything. I just think it's funnier that way.
the amount of tattoo's i'm going to get in galactic basic-
i learn't the alphabet on a whim two years ago, and i still can still read and write with it, yes it's sad but at least no one knows what i'm writing eheh
AUREBESH (the Galactic Basic writing system) HAS UNIQUE CHARACTERS FOR DIPHTHONGS AND DIGRAPHS. USE THEM.
This has been a Star Wars PSA.
Star Wars and Letters
I made a thing! btw does someone know whether (or how) you can put a table in tumblr?
This (the Mando stuff) is all my head-canon and non-official. There are a lot of nice alphabet-replacing fonts out there but since Star Wars officially doesn't use our alphabet and also nobody ever said anything about names for those letters, I just let myself go and made something up.
Here goes nothing.
Basic Aurebesh is the most common alphabet and used by every variety of Basic (e.g. Galactic Basic Standard, Mid-Galactic Standard, Coruscanti Basic, Gungan Basic) and many other languages (e.g. Bocce). (This is actually official and - at least pre-Disney - canon!)
The Tionese Alphabet is mainly used for variables in mathematical equations and for alphanumerical designations aka Alpha-17; it is still used unofficially as a normal writing system in some Tionese settlements. (This is also official and - at least pre-Disney - canon.)
Mando'riitese, also known as the Mandalorian Alphabet or the Mandalorian Aurebesh, is used by those who "cling to the outdated rules of the resol'nare and close their eyes to the political and societal reality of our days" and definitely not in House Kryze or in Sundari while Satine Kryze is still alive. (This is my own shit. I don't like Satine, btw. We don't get on.)
IPA (the Interstellar Phonetic Aurebesh) is a way of transcribing the (most common) pronunciation of a sound or letter.
The Classic ABC is the alphabet used by the High Galactic Language, an ancient language used to show respect for the clergy, to name Jedi lightsaber forms, and as the language of the Imperial court and elite during Palpatine's reign. (This is, again, official and - at least pre-Disney - canon.)
The Spelling Alphabet at the end was used during the Clone Wars by the GAR. It was designed to reduce confusion to a minimum.
