Been poking at the bits and pieces of my WIPs to see if they spark anything. No luck. But I quite like this snippet.

“And you like to play chess with other people's lives.”
“As I recall, you've won quite a few chess matches against me,” White replied drily.
“And you always accused me of cheating,” Black shot back with a glare, although to White's relief the glare held a note of self-satisfaction.
“And you've admitted as much.”
The note soared into a song, with the slightest up tilt of the corners Black's mouth.
“And yet you've never figured out how I did it, sir,” Black chuckled softly, “I would love to be able to play chess with you again.”
“I'm certain the Tracys have a chess set here,” White offered.
“I'm certain they do, but,” Black looked down and picked at his his toast, “playing any game...it would take a certain level of trust I just don't have any more.”
It stung, but White just shook his head, his voice gentle.
“It would be just a game, Captain.”
“It always is, Sir, it always is.”
I can only afford to continue playing this game today. I have laundry duties tomorrow.
