Gamify Your Life with One of These 9 Apps Nov. 2025

I checked out and tested these productivity apps for a week so that you don't have to. The top things that I looked for was how usable the free versions were, customizability, ease of use, and their fun factor. While I would consider using most of these long term, some stood out more than others and a few still need a little more time in development but have potential to be excellent.

And now I present--waves hands emphatically--the top apps from lowest to highest rating.

*Apps were tested on Bluestacks and an android LG Fiesta

Has potential. As you check off tasks you gain attacks to battle creatures. This app still has a lot of work ahead of it though and you only get 3 days for free.

Has potential. Simple appearance and easy to use. According to the ad for the paid version there may be boss fights coming soon which you can try, along with other upcoming features, if you unlock the paid version. However I had issues with it where sometimes I would check something off and log back in later and it would not be checked off, which led to incompleted tasks the next day.

Has potential. Not a fan of the old retro appearance myself. You complete tasks to heal and level a hero and you can hunt creatures or do pvp battles in turn style fights. However there were only 15 tasks in the free version and it was quite buggy and slow.

I like this. The appearance and story/quests is cute but you have to visit multiple times a day to check tasks off because there are morning, afternoon, and evening tasks and you can't complete them before certain times of day.

I like this. You take care of an otto pet(otter) that you can dress up and decorate its little houseboat. However I could never get the furniture shop to load in and there was a lot of empty space to scroll through before you get to your list. Might have better results with a newer phone/device. I tested this on bluestacks, it would not work on my older android device. Overall very cute.

I like this. You travel across the path with each task and you complete, and level and gear up your avatar. The combat system could use an overhaul though because either you kill something with one shot or vise versa.

I loved this. You travel a map and clear towns of monsters and collect creatures to add to your team/party. If you miss tasks the monsters attack the your team for each missed task. I do wish you could choose to turn that part off or choose which tasks you would be penalized for. Also you can't put your task list in a customized order.

I loved this. You hunt beasts and collect beast cards. Love the background music and the meditation options. Might even use this just for the vast array of meditation selections. The story was on a professional audio book level of performance and it changes based on some of your profile choices. It does work better on a mobile device than in Bluestacks however. I enjoyed it immensely.

I absolutely loved this app, it is my new favorite. It's very cheerful and easy to use. You care for a very adorable bird, dress it up, and decorate it's little room, there are even minipets. My only real complaint is the teeny tiny font size. Like damn, you may need a microscope.

Gamify Your Life:

A Review of 12 Gamified Habit/To Do List Apps

This review is not sponsored. I did this in an ADHD fueled hyperfixation haze while trying to find an app that worked for me to help with my dysfunctional executive function and I wanted to share my results but wasn't sure where to do that. So now it lives on tumblr. I tried these apps on an android device, I do not know if they have iOS versions. Ranked in order from worst to best rated on a 5 star system here are my results.

For those who don't want to read the entire thing and only want to know which app I chose in the end to use for myself it was;

⭐ Habit Hunter: RPG goal tracker ⭐

HibaQuest: Gamify,ToDo,Habit

Liked Most: 

Easy to create Tasks.

Liked Least: 

No real ‘game’ aspect except leveling yourself up.

Game Aspect:

You level yourself up.

Pros:

Easy to create tasks.

Simple and easy to use.

Can upload a profile image.

Can create specific date tasks, daily habits, or weekly tasks.

Free to use.

Very thorough and easy to follow tutorial

Cons:

Simple bare bones, no themes or dark mode.

Can create weekly tasks but not what day you want them on.

The only ‘game’ aspect of it is leveling yourself up, the ‘quests’ are the items on your checklist, there are no beasties to defeat or challenges to win or gear or cosmetics to acquire.

No character to create or gear up, only a profile image.

Character appearance.

Liked Least: 

In order to get your ‘Repeatable’ Tasks to move into the folder to check them off you have to hit copy on every single one, every day.

Game Aspect:

You unlock a limited amount of features of the app and cosmetics with your earnings.

Pros:

Your character appearance is very nice, best I have found so far. You can choose to have human ears, pointed up elf ears, or pointed down elf ears. And some lovely hair color choices as well.

Free to use with the option to unlock certain features through gameplay over time.

Different unlockable color themes to choose from.

You can watch ads to earn more in game currency if you choose.

If you need help there is a helpful wizard with pre-set FYI style questions you can ask.

You can unlock the ability to create a widget of your to-do list.

Cons:

Choices for cosmetic gear is limited.

Starts out with very limited use, you have to unlock certain features over time with exp and in-game currency, which you can basically just game the system by creating as many tasks as you want and keep checking them off until you unlock everything that you want.

Checking off tasks is not obvious, you have to slide them to the side to make the check mark appear.

The only thing you can use your rewards for is unlocking features of the app and cosmetic items.

The only ‘game’ aspect is leveling up your character.

In order to get your ‘Repeatable’ tasks to move into your daily folder to check them off you have to hit copy on every, single, one, every, day.

Liked Most: 

Watching my character put the smack down on habit beasties.

Liked Least: 

You can only create a very limited number of habits/tasks with no upgrade option available.

Game Aspect:

You level up a character, gear it up, and watch it attack enemies on your list for each thing you check off. Monsters will appear in your village that you or a mercenary must defeat.

Pros:

After you check off an item your character physically attacks the monster related to it or tries to break open a chest, which is cool.

You can create bad habits if that is your thing, so you can keep track of how often you are doing them.

There are consequences for leaving tasks uncompleted or for doing bad habits.

You can hire mercenaries to defeat monsters that spawn in your village.

You start out completely nekkie. O.o

Cons:

You can only create a limited number of Habits and Routines with no option to unlock or purchase more that I could find anywhere?

Not the greatest graphic appearance, very similar to Habitca in that it is very pixilated. I guess if you are into that sort of ‘retro’ look this could be a ‘Pro’? To me it just looks cheap and unfinished.

There are consequences for leaving tasks uncompleted or for doing bad habits.

Very limited character creation appearance choices and gear.

You can’t rearrange the habits after you create them if you want them in a different order.

Game Aspect:

Earn badges for different objectives.

Pros:

Free to use with option to unlock premium.

Easy to set up habits and edit them later.

Lots of icons to choose from.

Dark and light mode.

Neat graph and statistics page to keep track of what you have accomplished.

Cons:

The only game aspect of it is earning badges.

You can’t rearrange your list order after creation.

I liked being able to decorate a little room.

Game Aspect:

Decorate your cozy little room and help your rabbit friend grow up.

Pros:

Free with option to purchase a monthly or yearly subscription to unlock unlimited Routines and other features.

Really cutesy room to decorate.

Fair amount of styles and furniture to pick from.

You can add friends in game and share your decorated rooms.

Tasks are easy to create.

Cons:

A bit childish in appearance.

A little glitchy, was slow to respond at times and froze and crashed occasionally.

You can only create 8 repeating daily tasks i.e. ‘routines’ for free so if you have more than that you have to create them daily.

Habitica: Gamify your Tasks

Liked Most: 

Being able to create separate daily habits and weekly dailies, and date specific to-do’s and the ability to rearrange them in the list.

Liked Least: 

Does not feel like progress is being made without a real visual representation of it happening other than just checking it off with a tiny reward pop up at the bottom.

Game Aspect: 

You level up your character, pet, or mount. You have to purchase quest scrolls and then after you activate one you have to create a party--and you usually end up having to solo it because there is rarely other players ‘looking for a party’--and complete certain objectives to kill an enemy that could potentially take days or weeks to complete.

Pros:

Free with optional paid subscription or gem purchases for additional shop items.

Pets and mounts are cool.

The task lists are fairly customizable and you can rearrange the order of tasks.

A lot of gear and cosmetic choices with more being added on a regular basis.

Cons:

You have to buy quests with your earned currency or gems and it takes a long time to complete the quests, especially if you can’t get a party.

The only real visual representation of progress is your character and pet levelling up and collection of items and currency.

The game graphics of your character and pets are pretty shitty, extremely old school pixilated that they refer to as ‘retro’. I guess if you are into that sort of thing this could be a ‘Pro’? It just made it feel cheap to me.

Like Most: 

I like the visual of the reward for checking tasks off, a big pop-up with your reward of items and skills gained.

Like Least: 

It was very slow to respond when checking off tasks.

Game Aspect: 

You level up your character, you can complete basic click-through quests based on your attribute levels.

Pros:

I like that the reward pop-up for checking off tasks takes up the whole screen so that you get that feeling of actually receiving something, as opposed to some other apps where you barely get a visual representation that anything has happened outside of checking a box.

There are repeatable quests that you can complete.

Habits are easy to set up and you can select what type of skill reward you can receive for completing them, like strength or dexterity or luck.

You can create daily, weekly, or specific date habits, repeating or one timers.

Cons:

App was only released in Sept 2024 and is still in beta so its still buggy. 

Checking off tasks is slow to respond.

Tasks in your lists are big and take up a lot of space so it’s hard to review your daily tasks at a quick glance without scrolling forever.

I can’t seem to scroll down the analytics page even though it appears as if you should be able to.

No specific ‘dark’ mode, the Color Scheme button does nothing when I tap on it, it says ‘Set by device’. Apparently it thinks my system is light and not sure how to change it.

Basic pixilated character with limited appearance and gear choices.

The quests are a little boring, you wait for a 30m timer then choose a skill upgrade that you would like to try for, then your success rate is based upon your attribute levels, and that’s it. Done. If you succeed you get a reward, if you fail you have to wait until the next day to try again.

Like Most:

Easy to create and edit tasks.

Like Least:

The childish cartoon appearance and the blocks of land leave something to be desired.

Game Aspect:

Easy to create habits with colorful icons and a sizable icon library.

You can buy more plant options in a shop.

An extra reward for completing your whole list for the day.

Cons:

Ad pop-up to purchase subscription every time you create a new habit.

The garden you grow your plants in is a fairly lackluster grid and you can’t choose where the plants go.

The plant options in the shop is pretty limited.

App crashed a lot, especially when playing ads.

Pros:

You can customize your own rewards right down to the experience and skills gained, you can get pretty creative with this, I had some fun making some of these.

Free to use with option to purchase a Premium version to unlock additional features.

Cons:

There is a bit of a learning curve, you basically have to create your own reward system including what skills and experience you gain from checking off tasks AND reward items and what those reward items give you.

You are leveling yourself up but not really doing anything with your skills in-game, there are no quests or challenges to win or beasties to defeat or even cosmetics to buy.

Your ‘character’ is just a basic clip art person, not much customizability to it’s appearance.

Reward and achievement system to keep you motivated.

Quests to complete that teach you about habits and productivity.

Lots of fun icons and colors to choose from to customize habits.

There is a Journal.

Cons:

You have to put all your habits in ‘Rituals’, the whole habit creation process seems a bit inefficient and clunky to me.

The only visual representation of completion is the xp you earn for checking things off.

The quests are fairly limited, you do have the option to unlock more by purchasing the pricy subscription.

You are leveling yourself up but not really doing anything with your skills in-game, there are no quests(outside of the ones that teach you about habits and productivity) or challenges to win or beasties to defeat or even cosmetics to buy.

I like the visual representation of moving through a map as I checked off my list and getting to fight monsters.

Liked Least: 

After completing the first map you either have to pay to unlock more maps or start over from scratch.

Game Aspect:

You travel through a map as you check off tasks and defeat monsters on the path in turn based attacks and complete quests that require you to complete a certain number of to-do tasks and defeat a boss. You can gear up your character with your reward earnings and level up and spend skill points and attribute points.

Pros:

I especially liked the visual representation of progress being made as my character moved through a physical map as I checked off my habits and to do list.

Tasks were easy to create.

You can create daily habits, weekly, or specific dated tasks. As well as create long term projects that you could break into smaller tasks.

The graphics were pretty good considering, best of the gamify apps I have found so far.

Actually get to battle monsters in turn based attacks.

You can level up your hero’s abilities and skills and buy armor with coins earned through progress and quests completed.

There is a cute pomodoro timer

Cons:

The dialog of the quests, npcs, and in areas of interest marked with exclamation marks were terrible. I don’t know if they just didn’t care, didn’t take time to work on it, or if it was a translation problem, or all of the above.

The graphics were fairly basic and cosmetic armor/weapon choices were not the greatest but certainly not the worst I have come across.

Only the first map area is free, after you clear all the quests and reach the end of the road of that map you are forced to pay to unlock more maps or start all over again from scratch.

The combat system vs enemies was not well balanced, either you snuff out the monsters with one shot or they are completely over powered and snuff you out. You win or you die too quickly to put any real skill into it so your choice of skills/spells used don’t really matter much, just pick your strongest attack and bash each other.

At some point you max out your offensive/defensive skills/spells but still collect skill points every level with no place to spend them.

Rogue Crusade Life Hack #0001: Google Chrome Typewriter

So, I'm on the Google Chrome Store completely by accident, and I find the Typewriter Sounds extension.

"Well, that's interesting," I think to myself. "I'll give that a try." Obviously I'm thinking it'll get annoying after a while, so I'm pleased to see there's an easy on-off switch in the toolbar. Then I go about my day.

48 hours later, the little "ding" sound when I hit return (which is "enter" for you PC peeps) is still making me smile, and the tippy-type is actually kind of soothing. . . says the gnome.

It doesn't do the sound when you're in a large text-area, like the box I'm typing this post in right now, but it makes it on any regular text field- like the title field, or the search bar of a website, or a social media reply box (and, as I've said before and will say again, FB needs all the help it can get).

But the point is, it's not a never-ending constant thing, just enough to be enjoyable. Plus the on-off switch is easy to get to.

I'd probably not install it at work with actual people. I can see it driving Mr. Beach insane. . .

But I have zero regrets on the install on my home work computer. And. . . ya know. . . if you want to pull some shenanigans. . . :)

So my party on Habit essentially went dead and I'm looking to make a new one. It will have four members, one from every class, and it'll just be a small group that can be dedicated to Habit while getting to know each other.

I'm a level 15 Cleric. That leaves room for a Warrior, Rogue, and Mage. Rogue tentatively taken unless you're fast.
