Last Glacier Standing in Venezuela
In 1910, glaciers spanned an area of at least 10 square kilometers (4 square miles) in the mountainous region of northwestern Venezuela. Today less than one percent of that glaciated area remains, and all of it is locked up in one glacier. The ongoing retreat of Humboldt Glacier—Venezuela’s last patch of perennial ice—means that the country could soon be glacier-free.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired these natural-color images of the glacier on January 6, 2015. The top image is draped over topographic data from NASA’s Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), and shows the glacier in context with the topography. The second image is a nadir view.
The glacier is within the Sierra Nevada de Mérida—the highest part of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela. It sits on a slope and saddle below the summit of the 4,942-meter-tall (16,214 feet) Pico Humboldt. For comparison, the nearby Pico Bolívar is the country’s highest peak at 4,978 meters (16,332 feet). The mountains here are remote and steep. In fact, the topography could be one reason why the glacier has not already disappeared.

Final Evauation
During this project many ideas changed and developed, from the initial base which really helped the outcomes development. Personally, I believe this project on a whole was very interesting combination of information and creativity, which while initially difficult to combine became much easier with time. The reason for this is likely freedom that the concept gave. As Sea level rise has many aspects that I enjoyed exploring, which then combined so to help produce a full picture instead of a splinter. Although I believe that if I continued this project the outcome would be more dramatic and informative, resulting in much more expressive response.
Though as it happens the outcome that I produced was expressive, if limited in colour. This was designed with the idea of conveying sea level rise and the main direct cause, as I felt that was the easiest method to follow. As showing the cause of ice melt, didn't seem as enticing for the viewer to look at. While designing to showcase this concept, I decided that to truly get in touch with the issue I had to take a more wholesome outcome. As a result of this I used cotton and natural substances to dye and stiffen the fabric, because taking the environmental issue into the construction seemed like the logical and ethical thing to do. Especially considering the project base.
Through the process of sampling prior to construction there were multiple issues, though the main one was with the vegetable dye. As I needed to create a seas colour, which is commonly blue or green, which are incredibly hard to make as blue has very few common bases to create from. Because of this the result wasn't very blue and shifted my schedule back about a week. Which had a knock-on effect to the construction element, making it a rather rushed construction to complete. Although in the end it did come together, even with some drawbacks in the process.
Looking back if I had the option of doing this project again there would be little that I would change, though I would explore the dyes much more. So, I could have a more accurate idea of the colours that would be produced from using them. Other than this I wouldn't change the path I took while exploring this project as it produced an outcome that I am immensely pleased with, considering the issues and difficulty associated with the concept that I chose.
