from /r/vexillology Top comment: Nepal was divided into several small principalities and kingdoms. There was two confederacy of 22 kingdom and 24 kingdom. Kathmandu valley was divided into three kingdoms ruled by three brothers. There was huge kingdoms in east like chaudandi and makwanpur. A small kingdom from confederacy of 24 kingdom called Gorkha started a campaign to reunify broken Kingdom into single nation. This flag was used for long time as a main flag of Gorkha military and all battalions used to carry it along with their own flags. The Gorkhali used this flag in their unification campaign. And they were able to unify a kingdom from sutluj river in west and teesta river in east. It was time of british colonialism. So, expanding british came into conflict with expanding Gorkhalis. And they fought a war called Anglo-Nepali war. And rest is history. Also, the image used in flag comes from hindu mythology. The guy is famous demon called mahisasur who is being slayed by trisul or trident of godesses durga. It is also tribute to patron diety Gorakshakali/mahakali of shah kings of Gorkha.
