RIME
Developer: Tequila Works, QLOC Publisher: Grey Box, Six Foot Rrp: £29.99 (Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam) Released: 26th May 2017 Available on: Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam I do love a good puzzle platformer, especially if the puzzles involve a bit of lateral thinking. Rime is definitely a game that falls under that category. It must be stated though that this title deals with some very dark themes, if you are of the sensitive persuasion (or just want to keep that good mood) perhaps don't play this game.
You play as a nameless protagonist that awakes after having been washed on to the shores of a strange island. You learn more about the island and the protagonist as you run, jump, push and examine things to solve the various puzzles. Rime tells its story without the use of words. However there are two stories at work, the characters and the lore of the island. The characters story will come to light as you play through, but the worlds lore is far more difficult to work out as its all in the environment and requires more work. The platforming is... competent, Prince of Persia this is not, but then again I wasn't expecting it to be and nor is the game trying to emulate it. If I have a complaint it's that occasionally the game seems to forget to 'grab' on to ledges. Thankfully there aren't any lives of health to lose so its not a big deal.
It's clear that the development team took some inspiration from Team Ico and Journey for this game, in fact while playing I had to double check that the game was made by anyone who has worked within Team Ico (the answer was no by the way). Generally the game as a whole is well paced but I have to say that I feel that I could have done with less repetition when it came to some of the puzzles.
This game is definitely worth taking the time to play, however I feel the price point is a bit too high for what the game provides.
Fixed camera action!
Here’s peek at the grey box pass for the demo based on the floor plan I drew for the map earlier. This is how transitioning between different shots will work in the game.
(All assets, character models, and textures are effectively placeholder. The game’s look is going to come together more after the level design is blocked out.)
Level Design and Grey-box practice
I am continuing to build my level design skills with my concept art exercise. This is where I take piece of concept art and recreate it in Unity to work on proportion, scale and speed. This one I did in an Hour and five minutes.
This one is a tad off everything is a little too close to the camera, so my angle is a bit off. However, everything individually is pretty nice, its close but not perfect, far from it. As I say after every single one of these, they do work and I am getting better and faster. I have already planned my next one it will be a mixture of landscape and buildings, it’s also a big one so should be a good scale exercise.
Fun, fun, fun!!!
