Hooking Up & Social Influence

I read an interesting psychology journal article today from a survey:

• 88% of men and 86% of women on a college campus engaged in hooking up at least once

• 47% of the men and 33% of the women engaged in sexual intercourse during the hook up

They also found that students overrated their peers of the same and opposite sex as more comfortable hooking up and engaging in different sexual activities than they actually were. They believe that false perception of peer pressure and the need to fit in has caused students to hook up more than they want to. It also means women during sexual assault may be less likely to recognize it as sexual assault because they see the actions as normalized and they won't fit in if they don't perform the same sex act they think their peers do

The study defined "hooking up" as two people engaging in any sexual activity with little liklihood of future commitment.

4TH WIN AND LAST FACILITATION !!

As our semester comes to an end, this is our last facilitation. One of the many words to describe this facilitation is beautiful. It is beautiful because it is about group influence and dynamics. It strengthens teamwork through cooperation with one another.

As I was observing the first groups doing the activity, guess what my ego said? 😝 “Kaya namo ni.” At first, I was worried since kurog kog kamot, and I didn’t want to ruin anything.

Our team decided to have a leader who would guide us to maintain organization, and it really worked. We had someone who led us successfully, and as team members, we did our best to listen and cooperate with our leader. Because of that, we achieved our goal, and it was truly fulfilling.

I felt a bit emotional EMOTIONAL? since this was our last facilitation activity. Over the past few weeks, this facilitation gave me something to look forward to every Thursday and Saturday jud. It wasn’t just because it’s important for our grades—although it is—but because I genuinely enjoyed participating. Each session allowed me to learn new things, engage in fun activities, and interact with classmates I’m not usually close with.

I’m very grateful to Miss Barbie for introducing the group facilitation, as it made Social Psychology fun to learn. I also appreciate each group’s effort in organizing the activities. Thank you everyone!🫶🏻

Group Influence 👯‍♀️🎯

Our last facilitation on group influence really tested our teamwork through the “ballering” activity 🎯

The game itself was not easy sigeg kahulog ang ball and lisod kaayo i balance gamit ang rope 😭 That’s why we realized na dili jud enough ang effort sa isa lang. You really need to strategize as a group and, most importantly, communicate clearly with each other to make it work.

In the end, the activity showed us how strong group influence can be, when everyone listens, cooperates, and moves with the same goal, even the hardest tasks become possible 💛

What a blast Thursday! Wala koy laing mabuhat kundi sige ra og katawa BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA 😭 even caught on camera akong pag ambak kay naka-shot gyud tawn sa bola 😆. But for real, our last facilitation about group influence was super fun and engaging.

During the activity, grabe gyud among teamwork. Ga tinabangay gyud mi tanan para ma-transfer ang pingpong ball and maka-shot sa pikas. Of course, competitive sad mi BWAHAHAHA but in a fun way. Even though dili kami ang overall champion, I still felt so proud sa among group.

I realized that I couldn’t have done all that alone. Everything we achieved was because of our cooperation, communication, and support for each other. That’s when it really hit me—group influence is real. The energy of the group pushed me to do more than I thought I could.

And since this was our last facilitation, it made the moment even more special. It wasn’t just about the activity anymore it was about all the memories, laughter, and teamwork we shared. Something I’ll definitely carry with me 🤍

I am not the same person when I’m alone as when I’m in a group.

Sometimes being around others makes me better — more confident, more energized, more willing to try. Other times, it makes me quieter. I hold back opinions. I laugh at jokes I don’t fully agree with. I let stronger voices decide. Groups can bring out courage, but they can also blur responsibility. It’s easy to assume someone else will speak up. It’s easy to go along just to keep the peace. What struck me most is that influence isn’t dramatic. It’s subtle. It’s in the way conversations slowly shift our views. It’s in the comfort of belonging. So maybe the real challenge isn’t avoiding groups — it’s staying aware inside them. To participate without disappearing. To belong without losing yourself.

Because community shapes us. And we’re shaping it too.
