My professor came up to me the other day and said: “Good thing about being my age is that you realize how much you know.” He’s 65. I looked at him, broken about the statement and replied: “And at my age you realize how much you don’t know.” He chuckled and said: “That’s a good place to be, and the fact that you are aware of that makes it all the better. This is the time in your life where you learn and start to create your own philosophy.” Another thing my professor likes to say to me a lot is: “Conserve your energy, not everyone in your life is worth the energy that you invest into them.”

I’ve been chewing on this thought and it’s been making me sad. It makes me sad to look back on all the people that I invested in, that I opened up to, that I was vulnerable for, and the ones that I wasted so much energy on. It’s sad because most, not all, but most people take advantage. Each time someone comes in and leaves they take a piece of you with them. It’s inevitable. It happens. And I guess that part of life is necessary because we must learn who to trust and who to let go. There’s only a handful of people that have your best interest at heart and those are the people that love despite your faults. I’m not just talking about small things, I’m talking about big fuck ups. The ones that love the way God wanted us to love each other and even the Bible says that those people are few in the world. Others walk around and act like they have that love and for a moment it might feel like they actually do, but you really get to know someone when they’re hurt. I’m no where near perfect but to admit that you are a human being, and that you are not always going to get it right, is the bravest thing anyone can do. Those are the people that I want to surround myself with. You can’t live life in perfection. You have fail in life. You have to get told no. You have to lose. Because that’s how life creates balance. I can get mad but I choose to learn. Learn to not trust someone after knowing them for 5 minutes. Learn to be my own person. Learn to know when enough is enough. Learn to not let bitterness control you. Learn to not let people control you. And it’s not about finding yourself. It’s about creating yourself and building yourself up into the person you want to be. Learning to leave the past in the past and live in the now and look forward to the future.
