Chapter 3: Bodyguard
Katarina arrives at the Ministry.
Sora will be Katarina’s bodyguard in the Ministry.
Luigi has made a formal request to the Ministry to assign a bodyguard to Katarina while she is working.
Sora has been chosen because he is competent, works in the same department as her, and is in the know regarding her dark magic activities.
Sora tells Katarina that she is lucky to have such a good father.
Luigi has always respected Katarina’s wishes despite what others said.
He allowed her to work at the Ministry so that she wouldn’t marry Geordo right away, and he assigned her bodyguards instead of making her stop working.
Katarina feels like she is blessed with her family.
Laura and Nix learn that Sora has become Katarina’s bodyguard.
Since Laura and Nix will resume their mission from yesterday and Sora will work as her bodyguard, Katarina is worried that their department might be understaffed.
Laura and Nix were not aware that Sora had become her bodyguard. Katarina is troubled when they ask why since she is not sure that she can tell them the truth.
Looking at Katarina’s troubled face, Laura tells her that she doesn’t need to tell them if she can’t. Laura and Nix both ask her to be careful.
Katarina ponders about the danger looming on her.
Based on Laura and Nix’s serious reactions, Katarina wonders if it is common for ministry employees to be assigned bodyguards. Sora replies that it is not common as far as he is concerned.
Katarina realizes that despite being in the safest place in the safest country of the world, there can still be dangerous people around. As proven by the succession struggle where royals killed each other in the royal palace itself.
She wonders how dangerous Marquis Randall can be if Luigi considers him a threat.
She makes up her mind to be careful for the sake of the people who care for her.
Katarina and Sora head to the special room where Katarina and Maria work on deciphering their covenants, then meet Cyrus.
Cyrus wants to talk to Katarina.
Cyrus wants to confirm something with Katarina. He has been investigating whether Frey Randall and Ginger Tucker can join the Ministry. There should be no problem with Ginger, but Frey can’t because she is “a candidate to become Prince Geordo’s fiancée”.
Katarina is shocked and confused. She hasn't heard anything about it despite seeing both Geordo and Frey recently.
Cyrus is surprised that she didn’t know about this. Katarina sadly says that gathering information is not her forte.
As Katarina seems deeply shaken, Cyrus changes the topic and asks why Sora is here. Sora explains that he now works as Katarina’s bodyguard, as per Duke Claes’s request.
Cyrus is confused over Katarina suddenly getting a bodyguard. Katarina gives a vague explanation, and Cyrus doesn’t pry further.
Cyrus mutters, “What in the world is Marquis Randall thinking…?”. Hearing this, Katarina sharply asks Cyrus if he has a problem with Marquis Randall too. Cyrus is confused and asks Katarina to explain herself. Katarina comes clean and explains that Sora has been hired to protect her from Marquis Randall.
Cyrus understands the situation, but he was actually talking about the issue of Frey Randall being Geordo’s fiancée candidate.
Katarina shockingly realizes that Frey is actually Marquis Randall’s daughter.
Marquis Randall causing trouble to the Claes family and Frey Randall announcing that she is Geordo’s fiancée candidate are probably related.
Katarina wants to confirm things with Frey
Katarina asks Cyrus permission to see Frey at the Academy of Magic.
Cyrus can’t allow her to meet someone related to the family who supposedly wants to harm her.
Maria suggests that she goes instead since she is not related to this case.
Cyrus will accompany Maria to ensure her safety.
Katarina talks to Sora about her second biggest fear.
Sora is surprised that Katarina let Maria go in her stead. He was convinced that she would insist on going herself.
Katarina wonders if she looks so unreasonable to him. Sora replies that Katarina tends to lose herself when it comes to the people dear to her.
Sora looks sincerely concerned, so Katarina decides to tell him about the second thing she fears the most: suddenly parting from the one she loves and being unable to see or talk to them anymore.
Katarina is always eager to help the ones precious to her because she doesn’t want to lose them.
Katarina guesses that her fear must come from her sudden death in her past life. She regrets that she can’t see her family or friends anymore. She realized this fear after realizing that she was terrified of falling in love.
Sora is surprised to learn that Katarina has lost people dear to her, but he understands the feeling because he has also lost someone precious to him.
Katarina explains that she treasures the people precious to her because of this fear, but it would come to nothing if she caused trouble to them, like how she caused trouble to Sora in Ocean Port Town.
Sora gently says that he doesn’t mind her causing him a little trouble. Even so, Katarina is determined to look out for herself.
Frey is absent from school.
Maria and Cyrus are back, but they haven't found Frey. She seems to be absent from school for family reasons.
They have brought Ginger instead since she has something that she wants to tell Katarina.
Ginger is hesitant to talk in front of everyone, so Katarina asks everyone to get out.
Ginger talks to Katarina (Ginger’s family circumstances).
Frey talked to Ginger about her family when Ginger was annoyed over receiving a letter from her father.
Ginger is the daughter Baron Tucker had with a servant he slept with.
She was initially raised at her mother’s home, but when her mother died, she was brought to the baron’s house. She lived apart from the main residence.
The baron completely ignored her and she was raised by servants.
The baron took an interest in her when she awakened her magic. She was then brought to the main residence, and his legal wife and children were jealous of her.
Katarina feels sorry for her, but Ginger doesn’t think it was that bad: she could live freely, and the servants that took care of her really cared about her. After all, they weren’t paid for this.
Ginger talks to Katarina (Frey’s family circumstances).
Ginger tells Katarina that Frey adores her since Katarina has made her the person she is today.
Ever since she was a child, Frey has been told that she only lived to serve as a tool for Marquis Randall. She spent all her time acquiring skills to be useful to him, and whenever she made a mistake, he would violently beat her.
Hearing this, Katarina remembers how somber and resigned Frey looked the first time she met her. She also recalls their conversation back then, what she told her and how she brightened up afterwards. Now that she understands what Frey went through, Katarina feels outraged.
Katarina tells Ginger that Frey is calling herself Geordo’s fiancee candidate. Ginger is shocked because this does not make any sense. Frey wants to work at the Ministry and would never dare steal the fiancé of her dearest Katarina. They both agree that she has probably been forced into this.
Katarina is determined to save Frey.
Katarina gets permission to leave work early to investigate Frey’s situation.
Katarina contacts all her friends to gather information about Frey.
Katarina discusses Frey’s situation with her friends (+ Mary)
Mary is the first to arrive. She has booked a room in the Ministry to discuss the issue with ease.
Mary has heard the rumor about Frey Randall calling herself Geordo’s fiancée candidate, but Frey has never said it herself. It is something Marquis Randall is spreading.
According to Mary, Marquis Randall claims that Katarina has no intention of marrying Geordo since she joined the ministry to avoid marrying him. He also claims that Katarina is a talented employee who enjoys her work at the Ministry, so she would rather keep working there. As a result, he suggests that Geordo marry his daughter instead.
Katarina can’t deny the claim because it is mostly true.
Katarina remembers what her father said about her possibly losing the one she loves before she realizes her feelings.
Mary adds that Marquis Randall also claims that Frey can’t make the declaration herself because she is busy with student council work and her studies. Frey is not at the academy, so she might be held captive at home.
Katarina wants to save Frey right away, but Mary convinces her that it would be pointless because they would just be politely sent away. Katarina can’t calm down when imagining Frey’s ordeal. Mary tells her that Marquis Randall can’t harm her if he wants to set her up as Geordo’s fiancée. Katarina calms down and blames herself for rushing to action again.
Frey used to be called “The Doll Princess” before she enrolled at the academy, because her eyes showed no emotions and her smiles were artificial. Mary is impressed that such a person could stand up to Marquis Randall.
Mary considers Marquis Randall as someone who labels people as “can use” / “can’t use”. During the only time she interacted with him, she had the unpleasant feeling that he was appraising her.
Katarina discusses Frey’s situation with her friends (+ Keith + Sophia)
Keith and Sophia arrive.
Keith was worried about Katarina possibly running wildly, so he preferred coming as soon as possible rather than waiting at home. Katarina reassures him by telling him that Mary stopped her before it came to that. Keith feels relieved and tells her that she has grown up. Keith’s words and gaze make Katarina want to call him “Mom”.
Sophia came as fast as she could, but Nicol didn’t get the message because he was at work.
Keith and Sophia haven't brought any new information compared to what Mary has gathered.
Keith knew about the rumor about Frey, but he didn’t tell Katarina because he was afraid that she would run wildly while the info was not confirmed. Katarina pleads guilty. Mary still thinks that Keith should have told her because Katarina was shaken when she learned about it. Keith apologizes to Katarina.
Mary and Keith ponder Marquis Randall’s motive. Marquis Randall probably wants to have Geordo as insurance in case things don’t work out with Jeffrey. Geordo wouldn’t let himself be manipulated, but people might think otherwise since Geordo feigns friendliness with them.
Katarina discusses Frey’s situation with her friends (+ Alan)
Alan arrives, but Geordo is not with him.
Geordo is not free to move around because Marquis Randall’s people are sticking to him like glue.
Mary asks Alan to give more details about Geordo’s situation.

Now that the harvest festival is over, Katarina and Keith are going back home.
Keith tells Katarina that Marquis Randall is currently causing trouble to the Claes Family.
Marquis Randall and other families have been asking the Claes Family whether Katarina really intends to marry Geordo.
Marquis Randall is not on good terms with Jeffrey despite leading his faction.
Marquis Randall and Susanna Randall are rumored to be on bad terms with each other and that she is not living at home as a result.
On the next day, Katarina goes to work at the Ministry.
Laura and Nix will go out on a mission in disguise.
Laura and Nix will grudgingly dress up as plain manual workers.
Laura is handsome when dressed as a man.
Laura can’t take Nathan with him because he can’t afford to have him getting lost.
Laura’s current face is not his true face because “a lady should never show her true face.”
Lisa and Nix’s backstory
Lisa always talks with a plush doll because she can’t talk because of a wound on her throat. The plush doll is, in fact, a magic tool that can read the vibrations of her throat.
The plush doll is something that Nix requested the Ministry to make before, when she was depressed over being unable to talk anymore. Both of them were moved when it worked.
Nix started acting as a narcissist right after she acquired the plush doll. Lisa thinks it must be because he thought she wouldn’t look as weird talking with a plush doll if he acted weird right next to her. While it may have been an act at the beginning, Nix really became a narcissist afterward.
Lisa could use a less visible magic tool if she wanted, but she keeps using the plush doll because she doesn’t want Nix to remain the only weirdo left.
Katarina and Sora work on delivering packages with Tank Top.
Katarina ponders Lisa and Nix’s story.
She wonders if her coworkers are not simple weirdos after all.
Sora tells Katarina that most people in the department actually know this story, but Katarina is the only one who directly heard it from Lisa.
Sora guesses that their coworkers must trust Katarina because she is an honest idiot.
Tank Top’s back story
Katarina asks Tank Top if he has a deep reason for wearing tank tops all year long.
Tank Top always wears tank tops because it enables him to admire his arm muscles at all times.
Katarina is shocked. Sora teasingly asks Tank Top whether he doesn’t want to admire his leg muscles too.
Tank Top replies that he would indeed like to admire his leg muscles too. He originally wore both tank tops and shorts, but he got cautioned by his superior because it was an improper work outfit. After he heavily insisted, he was allowed to wear either tank tops or shorts, but not both. He chose to wear tank tops because he looks at his arm muscles more often than his leg muscles. However, when he is home, he removes all his clothes and exercises.
He proposes to show Katarina his leg muscles, ready to remove his pants. Katarina politely refuses.
Sora knows about his coworkers because they live in the same dorms.
Sora is not surprised by Tank Top’s story because he always sees him admiring his muscles in the dorm. Katarina wished Sora had prevented her from asking if he already knew.
Living in the same dorms as his coworkers enables Sora to learn more about them.
Most of the people that Sora knows live in the dorm since the rent is affordable despite being in the capital. However, Nathan and Laura don’t live in the dorms.
The Ministry grounds are complex, so Nathan would get lost if he lived in the dorms. Nathan actually lives in a nearby town straight ahead of the Ministry. He uses a magic tool to safely commute to the Ministry.
Sora doesn’t know where Laura lives. Actually, he doesn’t know much about him.
Katarina talks to Nathan while taking him to another department.
Katarina is asked to take Nathan to another department so that he won’t get lost.
Katarina asks Nathan if he has ever seen Laura’s true face. Nathan says he hasn’t since Laura doesn’t want anyone to see it.
Katarina asks Nathan what his real face looks like. When he shows her, Katarina can see that his face has no special features and is easily forgettable.
Nathan observes people. He can tell that despite how he acts, Nix is actually clever. He can also tell that Katarina is not enthusiastic about her dark magic lessons.
Katarina confides to him that she thinks dark magic is bad. Nathan kindly listens to her worries and tells her that he doesn’t think dark magic is absolutely bad. For example, it could be considered a good thing when it is used to erase someone’s painful memories. There are multiple perspectives on dark magic.
Nathan invites Katarina to think about why dark magic was created in the first place. He also encourages her to think of dark magic as something that could save someone’s life.
Katarina heads to her dark magic lesson with Raphael.
Katarina talks about dark magic with Raphael.
Raphael immediately notices Katarina’s mood change regarding her dark magic lessons. He noticed that she wasn’t enthusiastic about them.
Katarina tells Raphael about her earlier discussion with Nathan regarding dark magic, and how she should consider dark magic as something that can save someone.
Raphael agrees with Nathan. Despite what Marchioness Dieke did to him and his mother, her original purpose was to save her son, which is not absolutely bad.
Katarina is surprised that Raphael can objectively ponder the feelings of his mother’s killer.
Raphael explains that working at the Ministry has enabled the wounds of his heart to heal. Thanks to it, he can objectively look back on this incident now.
Katarina is amazed and relieved. She has been afraid all this time that these dark magic lessons would make Raphael recall bad memories.
Raphael replies that she doesn’t need to worry about this. He is quite happy to teach her dark magic because it gives him an opportunity to have her all to himself.
Lunchtime.
Katarina usually meets Sora at the dining hall and eats with him, but he doesn’t seem to be here today.
Katarina meets Maria instead, so they decide to have lunch together.
Maria is not with Dewey because he is out of the office today. He has planned to go shopping with his siblings. As for Ronnie, he works while going to school.
Sora and Cyrus join them.
Cyrus has been making efforts toward Maria.
He now eats at the dining hall occasionally to get used to women.
He still can’t sit opposite Maria.
His progress is very slow compared to Dewey, who now takes advice from Sora.
Cyrus explains how academy students are scouted.
It is the period when the Ministry starts sending invitations to academy students.
Ministry employees give courses at the academy. They take this opportunity to find promising students.
Katarina asks Cyrus whether student council members are sent an invitation. Cyrus replies that it is the case as long as they are not an heir to their family name.
Katarina doesn’t know if Frey has this kind of constraint, so she tells Cyrus that she wishes that students could be sent an invitation regardless of their family circumstances, as long as they have a strong desire to join the Ministry. Cyrus replies that he will look into it.
Katarina and Maria are working on deciphering their respective covenants.
Katarina talks with Maria about the dangerous sides of light magic.
The Dark Covenant mainly contains warnings regarding the use of dark magic.
The Light Covenant also contains warnings regarding the use of light magic.
Maria thinks that the warnings might refer to the dangerous sides of light magic. For example, if light magic could heal any wounds, people wouldn’t care how injured they get as long as they don’t die.
Katarina talks with Maria about her earlier discussion with Nathan about dark magic.
Maria personally thinks that dark magic was created by evil people to manipulate people’s minds. But she could be wrong.
Katarina was the same at first, but she thinks that she might have been led to think this way because of her first impression of dark magic. Because when she learned about its existence, she was told that it was something that amplified negative emotions. However, Sarah showed her various ways to use dark magic: creating a familiar, creating a parallel space, attack spells…
Dark magic can actually be used in various ways, so it might not have been created for an evil reason.
Katarina meets Laura and Nix on the way to her carriage.
Sora is busy with work, so Katarina walks alone to her carriage.
She meets Laura and Nix, who are back from work. They can’t wait before they can go back to their usual clothes.
Katarina feels emotional looking at Nix acting narcissistic. Looking at her, Nix and Laura think that she must be hungry.
Katarina ponders what Sora told her about Laura probably having a secret. She feels like if it were true, 1) it must not be something terrible given Laura’s good nature 2) she shouldn’t pry if he wants to hide it so desperately.
Evening at Claes Manor.
When Katarina is back home, Luigi and Keith are still not back from work. It is unusual since Luigi usually puts his family first.
Katarina has dinner alone with Millidiana. Millidiana asks her how she is doing at the Ministry. It seems like she still sees her as a troublesome child.
Luigi and Keith are still not back when Katarina goes to sleep.
Katarina ponders things before falling asleep.
Katarina ponders Nathan’s words again about why dark magic was created.
She thinks about OG!Katarina and can’t believe that she was able to decipher the Dark Covenant and use dark magic. OG!Katarina can’t be smarter than her?
She ponders about OG!Katarina’s motive in Fortune Lover 2. Why does she get in the way of the new capture targets? Is she still the rival character in Geordo and Keith’s routes?
Katarina wished she could trigger a dream that would give her these answers. So she thinks hard about her past life.
Katarina is assigned bodyguards.
In the morning, Katarina meets Luigi on the way to the carriage.
Luigi tells her that he will assign bodyguards to her starting today in case Marquis Randall tries to harm her.
Katarina wonders why Marquis Randall would want to harm her since he has nothing to gain except making an enemy of Luigi. Luigi loves his family and would go on a rampage if anyone touched them.
The bodyguards will only escort Katarina on the way to the Ministry and back. Another bodyguard will protect her inside the Ministry.
The bodyguards will escort Katarina from outside the carriage, on horses.
Katarina realizes that her bodyguards are the people who helped her a lot with her farming at Claes Manor before. She thought at that time that they were farm helpers.
