My Eurovision 2015 Tops
Of course I watched Eurovision - I can never really escape it since I am a European citizen. And if you watch the show, you’ll always have a very firm opinion on the contestants and their songs, and get pretty upset if the votes don’t turn out the way you’d have liked them to. So I thought, what the hell, I’ll share my faves from this year. And it was a pretty good year, actually.
1. Belgium - Loic Nottet: Rhythm Inside Oh dear. Where do I start? I really-really-really loved the performance, and I’d absolutely recommend the live version instead of the studio one, because the guy's giving all he’s got here. My first reaction was laughter, because, let’s face it, those dancers are dressed pretty awfully, but then they all began to move - and the harmony of their steps with the singer’s, the contrast between the colours of the clothes and the background and of the static and fragmented movements is great. Another wonderful thing is Loic’s voice. There is very little music (as far as I can tell), and he can control his voice fabulously, which is also very flexible. The whole thing is so simple, but this is what makes it great, and the rompanpan-lyrics just won’t get out of your head. Also, check out Loic’s moves, particularly the twirl he does at 1:20 or when he sings lying on his back at 1:30. Pretty classy. (Oh and he’s also rather handsome. The wicked smile at 2:16 always gets me.)
2. UK - Electro Velvet: Still in Love with you This song is so bad it’s actually amazing. And the more I listen to it the more I fall in love with it. The whole thing is a parody. The mood is great, a bit nostalgic (is it swing?) and makes me dance around the room, apart from the techno-ish(?) part at 1:10, which could have been left out, but then it wouldn’t be modern enough I guess. The voices are nice, I particularly love the guy’s because he sounds like he’s got a permanent cold. The best thing: THE LYRICS. I love the tease in it, the whole list of what not to do, and the reversing of the gender roles: it’s the girl who get’s told not to drink too much wine or get into a fist fight. Hah. And the sexiest part: 1:33 (”OH YES”). The live show was ridiculous but it applied to my aesthetics (those neon stripes, oh my), and I firmly believe that Europe never really got this song. If it comes to studio versions, this one tops my list.
3. Israel - Nadav Guedj: Golden Boy Israel has some of the best Eurovision songs (see Izabo’s Time from 2012), and this year they really were cool. It’s not to be taken seriously, a great dance song and nice background dancers (some of them even sung the song). Also it’s really hard to sing while dancing, and he never missed a tune. (I want his shooooooooooesss.)
4. Austria - The Makemakers: I am Yours THEY SET THE PIANO ON FIRE. And they deserve more than those 0 points, because theirs was an amazing song.
5. Australia - Guy Sebastian: Tonight Again Another party song! Get up and dance! Finally, a cheerful song among all those painful ballads. Unfortunately, the studio version is not that exciting, because you realize that the song is too repetitive.
Counting down to Eurovision!
I am such a dork.
PS I’ll be voting for Guy Sebastion! Several times.
Hit or Miss - ESC 2015
I am somewhat late to this years Eurovision party and with only 10 days to go before this years final, I have finally had time to sit down and scroll through youtube to find this years entrants. I've never been a fan of the 'My top 20' approach, so instead I have picked out a few songs that were an instant 'HIT' or a miserable 'MISS'.
I have to say, overall, I think the standard of the entrants this year are weak. Though there are some songs which are invariably better than others, I also don't think there is a standout winner. I hate to say it, this years semi-finals could be a drab yawn-fest but a good way to get rid of a lot of deadwood.
HIT: Italy - Grand Amore (Il Vivo)
If there is one, this is the 2015 standout winner. It is powerful, well delivered and in a way a little bit different to what were used to. It is a great mix of classical and pop music, and it works! After the suspense that the background music brings in the build up, the key change on the chorus is typically Eurovision and provides a distinct and memorable entry that will go down very well with voters. And if their live version is as good as the recorded it will be incredible on the night.
It will be interesting to see how they stage it and if they portray a story much like the video. If there is one thing that could let Italy down it is that, unlike us superfans, most viewers will only get to see it once on the Final and I fear if it is early in the show it may get lost and fade into the background. But this didn't stop Lena in 2010 and I hope that will be the case this time around.
HIT: Australia - Tonight Again (Guy Sebastian)
Although, this is their inaugural ESC, Australia watched the successes of years gone by and translated it into a very strong entry which will do very well on the night. I might even go as far as saying that this song is 'too good for Eurovision' and I have no doubt that it will have no trouble topping charts around Europe and further. It has very catchy lyrics that are planted firmly in your mind after just one listen.
This may not be Australia's only Eurovision appearance! Sydney 2016 anyone?
HIT: Norway - Monster Like Me (Mørland and Debrah Scarlett)
I really, REALLY like this one. It is the success story of the many duo's in this years contest. The lyrics tell a story which is moving, grabs a hold of you, draws you in and delivers beautifully. They did well with a similarly meaningful "Silent Storm" by Carl Espen last time around, and I believe this song delivers where its predecessor fell short. I am tipping this for (at least) a strong top 5 placing on the night.
HIT: Sweden - Heroes (Måns Zelmerlöw)
If catchy is what will win the night, then Sweden's entry is a certain challenger to Australia. Sweden just know how to get it right, finishing in the top 3 three times in the last 4 years. I think this is testament to the Swedish Melodifestival process which continually churns out great songs. Like Norway, if it is not the winner, it is sure to be close to the summit of the leaderboard come 11pm on May 23rd. Who can resist a clever little bit of animation on stage too, let alone the sex appeal - phwoar!
HIT: Slovenia - Here for you (Maraaya)
A rare gem for Slovenia, dare I say it, Duffy in disguise. Maraaya has one of those voices that you are instantly attracted to but the song is comparably strong. Slovenia have an awful record at the ESC, failing to qualify for the final on many occasions and only breaking into the top 10 three times in their history with 7th their highest placing in 1995 and 2001. This song may well change that, it will easily qualify and should be comfortably their highest ever placing.
NOT QUITE: There were a few omissions that I consciously made from my HIT list. Controversial or not, despite being earmarked as a favourite Estonia just doesn't make the cut for me, it doesn't make the required impact first time around and i think it will surprise a few just how low it could place on the night. In my opinion it is just not as strong as the five above. There is quite a bit of hype surrounding Belgium among ESC fans, could do well but it is not a winner. Undoubtedly, Finland will do well but it remains to be seen how well it will connect with fans. Denmark came close for me, you can always rely on them for your pop-rock fix at Eurovision.
MIDDLE MEN: There are a lot of plainly average songs that all merge into one for me, any combination of them could qualify but I doubt there will be any surprises from these entrants. Azerbaijan, Russia, Poland, Netherlands, Israel and Armenia to name a few.

Neon Trees to open up Oceania Tour
It was announced earlier tonight that Neon Trees will be joining Taylor on the Oceania leg of her Red Tour this winter (Oceania Summer)! They are one of her favorite bands, so it’s exciting to see her tour with yet another of her friends! You can read more below!
We’re excited to announce that US chart toppers Neon Trees will be joining Taylor Swift for all her #RedAUSNZ shows!
This won’t be the first time that Neon Trees and Taylor Swift have shared a stage however. Taylor recently invited Neon Trees lead singer Tyler Glenn on stage with her during her RED Tour for a special performance of ‘Everybody Talks,” telling the New Jersey audience that she’d “called up one of my favourite lead singers from my favourite band to sing one of my favourite songs.”
Neon Trees will open Taylor’s stadium shows across Australia, followed by Guy Sebastian and then the headlining lady herself, Taylor Swift. Neon Trees will be Taylor’s main support for both her Auckland shows.
Tickets to The RED Tour are on sale now, with some shows close to sell out. Hurry – because you don’t want to miss out on this one!
