I received an anonymous question on tumblr asking if I ever feel my weight gets in the way of my flexibility. This is a sticky topic for me because while I hate relating weight loss to my #yoga practice, I also can't deny that my flexibility has noticeably increased as a result of my body fat giving way to a more overall muscular composition. Here's what I'll say- your body can only get in your way if you let it. Even at my highest weight (~250lb), I've never really felt as though any postures are completely out of my reach. I've seen people of all body types struggle with a full range of poses- it was always very clear to me that my yoga practice could only progress as far as I would let it. Basically, my short answer is NO. Ultimately, I believe mental courage can overcome any perceived body weakness. Yes, my breasts choke me in poses like #halasana but what's the point of practicing yoga if you're not going to challenge yourself? And sometimes the challenge is simply trying not to obsess over preconceived notions of your body's abilities. Btw, if you ever want to ask me a question, feel free to hit me up on Twitter- I'm @jessnotjazz over there. #splits #hanumanasa
