Perhaps you will find me a little old-fashioned… I have a great deal of trouble addressing someone I have never met informally. I was raised quite strictly - we were never to use familiar terms of address with anyone outside our immediate family. Any breach of that rule would have been considered rather forward, and harshly reprimanded. I sometimes shudder at my husband’s easy manner of speaking to everyone so informally. Not that I hold it against him - he can do as he pleases, and besides, no one seems to mind. It’s simply that I could not bring myself to do it myself. With the sole exception of my roomate - she has been the only one, in fact - I addressed all my classmates formally. I still do the same with the women from the wives’ committee, even after all these years of working together. The only people I address informally are my immediate family: my brother, brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, and nieces. I address Mama formally, as I did late Papa, as well as my uncles, aunts, and grandparents - who, in turn, always addressed us informally. So please, don’t take it personally.

Lucien LeBris: Well, hello, Layla! Waiting for the ferry?
Layla Bernard: Good morning, Lucien. Yes, I have a doctor’s appointment.
Lucien LeBris: A doctor’s appointment? What do you need a doctor for when your husband is one?
Layla Bernard: You should know it’s not advisable for a doctor to examine their own family. Their judgment might be clouded, and they could underestimate the seriousness of an illness…
Layla Bernard: … Besides, Fabien already examined me. He didn’t find anything.
Lucien LeBris: I hope it’s nothing serious?
Layla Bernard: I don’t know. I hope not. I’ve been having more and more memory problems… I need to take some tests to make sure it’s nothing serious like Alzheimer’s disease.
Layla Bernard: They’re just routine exams. At my age, it’s unlikely to be that, but Fabien prefers not to take any chances.
